Seriously? Who doesn't allow "-" (plain old hyphen) as part of a password? I get maybe not calling it a special character but not allowing it?!? That's new.

Dear person trying to use my gmail account to sign in to your Subway rewards: it wasn't the right email the first four times, why do you think it'll work the fifth?

#MastoAdmin hivemind: anyone else seeing hashtag feed panes taking longer to load under 4.7.0?

I'm not 100% sure if it's new or I'm just imagining it, or even if it's just me, so I figured I'd ask around before I go digging too deeply.

"But billionaires take risks and start businesses!" This is one of the top arguments I see people around me in tech making. But guess what - people who aren't rich also take risks and start businesses. And some of those become the biggest businesses out there! Larry and Sergey weren't rich when they started Google. Far from it. What value does their obscene wealth now provide to society? I argue: none. They could have 1/100th of their personal wealth and still live exactly the same.

Ugh, something is freaking eating my lunch with network costs for media from Mastodon. And GCP media hosting via cloud buckets doesn't seem to have any great ways to filter that / figure out if it's from AI scrapers or something else (and do anything about it if I could figure that out).

Any #MastoAdmin folks fight with this already and have any suggestions?

Lol so Cloud's built-in ssh won't work with Tor Browser, but I was able to add a new ssh key so I could ssh natively. And the ssh session is working perfectly. So this was in fact all the stupid proxy nonsense they're running.

@mrfoostang right 😑 For example, I both find GenAI super powerful and useful for building projects (I'm both a systems and software engineer but prefer the systems / integration side, so GenAI writing the actual code is great for me) and would be extremely worried about deploying questionably-reviewed GenAI code into production environments because I know people (myself included) are lazy.

@mrfoostang I'm vibe-coding something right now that I would love to at some point possibly release but I honestly don't yet know how I would put it into a shape I'd be comfortable releasing it, as it's been developed almost entirely without line-by-line code review, and I've long been taught that unreviewed code is baaaaaad (and I agree, generally! But the world is changing very quickly in this area).

RE: @universalhub@mastodon.online

Such absurd virtue-signalling. Let's work on problems Boston actually has. Datacenters ain't one of them - the cost of land, and power, and water are all way too high for it to make any sense.

Knock off the #NIMBY headline-chasing and spend time on our actual problems like drugs, and terrible bike infrastructure, and y'know, the housing crisis?

Okay so both status.cloud.google.com and console.cloud.google.com load better (by which I mean: at all) via Tor than directly via this wifi network. Something is amiss with their filtering.

@mcahalane@mastodon.world Great point and nuance! This is absolutely a huge problem with the global taxation environment around wealth, as well as the US tax system in particular. Folks object to millionaires/billionaires' taxes because "they'll go elsewhere" - as a global society we should fix that. There should be nowhere to hide. But alas, I am not sure we'll ever see that happening. I also think this effect is grossly exaggerated, as is the impact of their "leaving". They're already hiding the wealth.

@theZosia@mastodon.com.pl absolutely fair point! If I were to actually put a number on it, I think the least controversial one I'd pick would be $100 million. This is where you (plural you in general, not you specifically) may well call me hypocritical, and that's fair, but the bottom line is that my home, alone, puts my "wealth" at over $1 million (and I again acknowledge my privilege there!). I can see a path in which I need $10 million to live comfortably after retirement, the way things are going.

@theZosia@mastodon.com.pl so for me, $100M is the next logical step. But it's absolutely fair for you and others to have other opinions! (Also: I don't own nearly 100% of my >$1M home, the bank owns a vast majority of it...)

AI Sourced Response Quoted
@theZosia@mastodon.com.pl @mathew@universeodon.com "There are approximately 3,300 to 3,428 billionaires in the world, according to recent wealth reports." says Google's AI Overviews. I think the idea of different thresholds for different parts of the world highlights another important aspect of wealth inequality - the national and continental levels. As discussed in a subthread with @drscriptt@oldbytes.space , to me ultimately the question is really about fairer wealth distribution in general, not the exact limit.
