I was able to get my first choice, and retained that through all the eWorld stuff, and it remains my primary mac.com name (as well as that of my own private domain). I do miss having apple.com on the end, though.

I joined Apple around the same time, maybe a year or two earlier (I could look it up, but I can't be arsed), and I remember distinctly the transition from Spindler to Amelio, and the meeting at DeAnza when he announced the umpteen billion dollar hole that had to be filled: 'We can do this once.' The layoffs that followed were fun, as I, too, had just landed in California, but the layoff angel passed over me and hit another guy, and I continued on for another several years. Managed to have a face-to-face with Steve at a whiteboard, which made my boss want to crawl out the door. All my code was in system software or printer drivers, and so had nothing like the longevity of PCalc, and probably very little of it exists any longer (although Print Centre is still called Print Centre!). Halcyon days, indeed. I do miss them.

Apple have committed a number of self-owns lately, but most self-respecting developers still try their best to adhere to certain standards regarding the Mac user experience. @1Password, on the other hand, have taken it upon themselves to ignore the user's specified highlight colour and just make it blue. The stated reason for this is so that it provides 'a more consistent and polished experience across all platforms, ensuring that 1Password looks and feels the same whether you're using it on your Mac, Windows PC, or in your browser'. Decide for yourself how believable this sounds. The jarring visual dissonance that occurs when this bright blue thing pops up when you need to enter a password has to be experienced to be believed. Bad enough that they're jumping onto the 'AI' bandwagon, but this level of ignorance on the part of a major developer about the macOS user experience is stunning. They can fix this or lose at least this customer. #1password #mac #macos #ui

Wrote my first video game in BASIC on mine, storing the program on cassette tape (before I got the drives). Also wrote a program to project star maps as seen from any other nearby star. Fun times.
