Vale Margaret Hamilton. She was a Software Engineer. She was the _first_ Software Engineer because she defined the term, Software Engineering: "When I first came up with the term, no one had heard of it before, at least in our world. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. It was a memorable day when one of the most respected hardware gurus explained to everyone in a meeting that he agreed with me that the process of building software should also be considered an engineering discipline, just like with hardware. Not because of his acceptance of the new 'term' per se, but because we had earned his and the acceptance of the others in the room as being in an engineering field in its own right." Margaret Hamilton led the Software Engineering team at MIT that created the software that ran NASA's Apollo Guidance Computer. The photo of her standing next to a stack of source code printouts — that's her work, and she was essential to NASA's mission of landing people on the Moon for the first time ever and getting them back to Earth again safely. Vale, Bill Oddie — Goodie, comedian, genius, educator, ornithologist; typically, a brilliant combination of several at the same time.

The AusAlert Test was a missed opportunity to send a public broadcast in the style of @scarfolk@mastodonapp.uk to everyone's phone, such as "For more information, please turn over."

New canonical example of the Dunning–Kruger Effect just dropped.

The ReplyGuy-ism and sense of entitlement — Vance thinks he's owed the opportunity to a "debate" about theology with the Pope, or that he can school the Pope on religious doctrine — is breathtaking.

@Unixbigot OpSec is hard. But, no excuse for in-house testing so uninformed and minimal that it puts them on a par with "I did my own research". If nothing else, I hope this debacle gives police reason to consider what it's like to be on the receiving-end of the "Nothing to hide" argument. ETA: I see what you did there with the query string!

NASA astronaut and Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman took this picture of Earth from the Orion spacecraft’s window after completing the translunar injection burn. There are two auroras (top right and bottom left) and zodiacal light (bottom right) is visible as the Earth eclipses the Sun.

Hello, World - NASA

This nighttime picture of Earth was taken on April 2, 2026, by an Artemis II crew member aiming a camera through a window of the Orion spacecraft. The image was captured after Orion completed its translunar injection burn, the critical maneuver that sent the spacecraft on its path toward the Moon and back.

Flutracking Australia is asking for more participants. They need more families with young children to take part, so consider signing-up, and share this with your parents, grandparents or carers.

It takes less than a minute to answer their weekly survey about cold/flu/RSV/COVID symptoms and vaccines. I've been a member of FluTracker for the last 10-15 years, and figure it's a good way to contribute to public health data and research.

@futzle @futzle@old.mermaid.town Thankyou for all your awesome work here on aus.social! You've helped a huge number of people make a great start in the Fediverse, and shown what social media can be with good community vibes. Personally, when I initially tried Mastodon a few years ago, I didn't stick around, but what I've seen here over the last few weeks has been a game-changer and I appreciate the part you've played in that.

@jpm@aus.social @fast_code_r_us@floss.social @Unixbigot@aus.social May I recommend a look at the SAM-M10Q? Its current consumption is on the order of 5-10mA in low-power and regular tracking modes respectively, and it has a multiband receiver and integrated antenna (generous keepout floodfill on the PCB forms an important element). Cold-start TTFF is around 30 seconds, which I think is fine for this application, though I can see why it would be prudent to do a DB-check/download while the device is being readied for logging a long journey.

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space Searching all maps in the known universe for the location of the Tannhäuser Gate returns no results. Seems this "Tannhäuser" place you refer to, like every referee on your CV, is a — whatchamacallit — a hallucination.

@mike@social.chinwag.org Did they miss the memo about the uglier a Chiko Roll is, the better it is? It should be wrinkly, deep fried to all fuck, and sporting enough oily carbuncles that you wonder if it was cooked-up by David Cronenberg. But, no, this looks like it's had Botox and a glow-up.
