@lykso@tiny.tilde.website @zzt@mas.to The problem is probably less that people will stop making contributions but rather that those valuable contributions will drown in an ocean of slop. There will of course be some that will use LLMs to make a contribution they genuinely will like to see, but most will (evenyually) be bad faith actors trying to boost their reputation, with zero interest in the actual the target.

@Rycaut@mastodon.social @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social There are studies on this. There is some where gender is hidden and women does significantly better than when gender is not hidden. I think the studies have both involved job applications and scientific articles. Gender bias is deeply rooted in society. It does not alter the results even when there are women among those reviewing applications or articles.

@Patrickoldhiker @drikanis @ludicity It remains a great fear of mine that those of us who went through education before LLMs, do not understand just how badly LLMs will affect education of young people. I worry we will get an entire lost generation of people who will lack even the most fundamental skills in reading, writing and math. And no, sending and receiving a thousand SMS and WhatsApp messages a day, will not compensate.

@TheStoneDonkey @maxleibman There is an article that I unfortunately never saved a reference to, that describes a research project to look at how rise in computing power affected the australian tax system. The expected productivity gains did not materialize, instead the tax code ballooned and became vastly more complicated. In other words, administrative systems tend to expand to the maximum level of complexity that can be handled at any given time.

@atpfm@mastodon.social When @siracusa@mastodon.social described unified memory, I realized that we have come full circle. Early microcomputers, certainly including the Commodore 64, had indeed also unified memory 😅 On the ‘64, you could change the beginning of the screen memory; if you set it to zero, you would be able to watch an illustration of some of the OS area, for instance the system clock.

@hell Welcome, just keep your questions coming, we are here to help. I am not quite sure about communities. For sure, we are here on mastodon. There are also mailing lists, but they tend to be quite busy. I would also expect there to be IRC channels, so it is perhaps mostly a question of what you would prefer.

@reiddragon @0x0ddc0ffee A friend told a story about somebody making an experiment, in which he took a sizable application and then set up a loop where he continuously asked the coding agent to improve the code. The application went from something like 20.000 lines to 180.000 lines when the experiment was stopped😂 I maintain, even in the age of AI coding agents, that a program shall be as short as possible, but not any shorter (to paraphrase Einstein, I think it was).

@JaxVent @BeamsAndBows @brawaru @aurynn As much as I personally agree, people have for a very long time consistently demonstrated that they prefer ads to paying up front; television, newspapers, the web and social media all being running examples. I think it is extremely unlikely the we get rid of this pest, ever.

@andrei@mastodon.sdf.org @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org How do you propose to review a piece of code to see that it is not of dubious copyright status? The policy, as I gather from the original toot, is not about the technical quality of the code but about its legal status. In fact, if it comes from AI, you are pretty much guaranteed that it has unclear status.

@marcoarment@mastodon.social @atpfm@mastodon.social Is it? According to https://knowscape.blog/east-river-depth-nyc-tidal the East River is on average 30-50 feet deep, though in places (like Hell Gate) it can be down to 100 feet. The Panama Canal seems to be pretty uniformily 85 feet deep, so yes, it is deeper. However, if one looks at the illustration at https://www.worldatlas.com/lakes/lake-gatun.html the bottom of the Panama Canal is roughly at sea level, thus East River does more to separate Long Island from the main than the Panama Canal does to sever the two Americas

@AT1ST@mstdn.ca @foone@digipres.club @technomancy@hey.hagelb.org My understanding is that the outage was due to a bogus DNS update. I would also assume that CoPilot and ChatGPT would be running on Azure (and not AWS), which is what makes it strange that ChatGPT was affected.

@xgranade@wandering.shop @bsdphk@fosstodon.org I have this theory that one large driver of AI adoption in various solutions is that statistics is hard and coders know too little about that subject anyway.
