My friend did such a clever thing for her birthday party. Folks get up and do a 5 minute talk on something they're passionate about. There was such a great assortment of different topics at different levels of depth. It's just awesome getting to hear what people are passionate about. And it's fantastic for introverts, I was able to just relax and let other people talk without seeming evasive or weird.

Cool, cool, cool.
Does that mean people will start taking Long Covid and related diagnoses seriously?
No?
Yeah, okay, that tracks.
Welp, I just spent $30 dollars at the local feed store on 3 gallon-sized pots of what is essentially a lawn weed. Where the heck will I put all of them??
But said weed is commonly called juicy fruit because it tastes like lettuce infused with that gum. Buying it saves me from eventually getting into a car crash because I keep looking for it in seed on the side of the road. (Apparently it also attracts butterflies that may or may not live in my area, which is why it's being offered as an ornamental, when it is decidedly weedy-looking)
And I got something called a "four season squash" (edible in flower form, summer squash form, winter squash form and... In between squash form, I guess?)
I'm forever looking for foods you can grow that are edible at multiple times of year, because I invariably miss one window due to symptom flares. Having two or more options doubles my chances of getting to eat them.
I still need to try shelly beans... There's too many options, and I get sorta paralyzed by choice. Anyone who'd like to recommend a good green bean/soup bean/shelly bean or pea variety for the PNW, I'm all ears.
#gardening
A couple shots from the garden as it slowly begins to fill out.
I generally kinda suck at giving gifts for actual occasions. I'm better at the random-Tuesday gifts, when I'm like "oh, they clearly need this hedgehog-themed pajama set" or something.
But this year, I got a well timed bit of ham (not spam because I signed up for it, but still promotional email) that gave me the idea that Mom needed a delivery of frozen German bread for Mother's Day. I don't know why it didn't occur to me on any of the half a dozen gift-giving holidays between my first order and now... But better late than never.
She was as thrilled as I was with my first box. The brödchen absolutely takes us back to breakfasts in Germany. Now if only I had a time machine (or more energy to do homemade) so I could get Quark to go with it...
If I liked eggs better, it'd make me wanna get egg cups and one of those fancy egg cappers for soft-boiled eggs. Are slightly jammy eggs to eat in egg cups a thing anyone actually does?
My friend is having a PowerPoint birthday party tomorrow. Everybody has to talk in five minute slots. I'm trying to not remind myself I have panic attacks when I speak in public. Or that maybe I can sneak out first.
The largest part of me wants to talk about the odds of getting long Covid and the damage it does. But also, other guests will largely be people who don't mask much (and I'll be hiding outside). Doesn't seem like his birthday far to talk about my shitty health conditions. But what would I say for five minutes about gardening, foraging, diversity in STEM and security. The latter 3 sounds like I'm trying to kill people.
I feel like I could make a stupid infographic without using AI that explains the pipeline issue, but it's arguably still a bit depressing.
What should I present on for five minutes or less? Plants, native or perennial and edible? What's a Grex and why should you plant one? Why should women join STEM in spite of an extraordinarily leaky pipeline? Or, I dunno, why are Stardew Valley and Cozy Grove Camp Spirit the best cozy games? That at least is fun.
@YetiBeets@lemmy.world can you plant in those pots? They look like they'd be good for some small trees, which would do a lot to make it look more welcoming. You could even get small fruit trees.
