@mcnado@mstdn.social You're assuming a person who entered prompts is responsible, rather than the AI service provider itself for providing a service that is not reliable. Rather than trying in vain to punish liability absorbers, hold the AI service providers liable for EVERYTHING the AI service does. EVERYTHING. They claim to have "guard rails", but these guard rails turn out to only be stochastic begging. Punish them for it.

@MichaelTBacon @MartinEscardo You know what drives me nuts? Volume control. Once upon a time, you could change volume INSTANTLY. It was just a cheap potentiometer. If something was TOO LOUD, you could turn the pot and THAT PROBLEM was solved just like that. But on a modern laptop? Or "smart" phone? Or almost anything? Yeah, good luck turning down the volume in a humanly reasonable amount of time. The CPU can do like millions of things per second, but not one of them is turning down the volume

@tinker@infosec.exchange Honestly I do not know how "spin up your own VPN" is supposed to be done, for most people, who only own property in one location. I can spin up a VPN for use by a buddy in some other region, for purposes of outfoxing geo-restrictions (and vice versa), but all by my lonesome? How? Where? Like, yes I can get an Amazon or Microsoft cloud server out there, but I DO NOT TRUST AMAZON OR MICROSOFT. If I don't trust the server I'm running stuff on, then ... ???

@Remittancegirl @JonChevreau I think the directives came from the top. Ever since Dan Rather, there has been a chilling effect on journalists applying journalism to Republicans. People get fired for applying journalism to Republicans. People don't get fired for applying journalism to Democrats. It's due to the Republican ownership of media.

@itamarst@hachyderm.io @Lana@beige.party I don't really know the subtleties of how all this works. All I know is that I checked my 401K and AFAICT it is a plain S&P 500 index fund. The only reason I chose that back in the day is because I felt like that was the conventional lowest risk choice. I'd like to be able to say I was "smart", but really I'm just lucky. If I had a fund that was Nasdaq - or part Nasdaq - I'd be trying to see if I could switch it or something, but I have no idea how successful I would be at that.

They simply do not make cell phones as loud as old fashioned wired phones, nor are they properly shaped to cup against one's ear. That said, it's probably pretty obvious to others that I need this, because I still hold up the phone next to my head, even though it's on speaker phone.

@FredKiesche @jdnicoll No, they don't need torchships, but they can have spicy fun with nuclear bomb based asteroid deflection. You actually want the opposite of torchship performance - ideally each nuke blows away ejecta at a relatively low exhaust velocity. This literally gives you the most bang for the buck. As a bonus, you have less remaining asteroid to accelerate with the subsequent nukes.

@avuko@infosec.exchange @Nonilex@masto.ai I can think of one thing in "mainstream" USA culture which is great, although it's really just a bizarre side effect of it not being thing elsewhere (why not?). Lemonade. It's really simple - just squeezed lemons and ice water and sugar. But it's just plain a lot better than what's called lemonade elsewhere. And I can't call it counter-culture. It's baked into this stupid capitalism hustle culture thing. Lemonade stands are all about little kids being taught to Capitalism.

I don't think block-chain is interesting either. It's an extremely (purposefully!) inefficient hammer without any interesting nail. I suppose on a meta level it's interesting that people find the basic idea interesting to try and solve, because public key cryptography gave us a tantalizing hint that maybe there would be a usefully efficient solution to something more

It has always been the lie of "self regulation" and it has always failed and this failure has never caused the "ideology" to die off because there has always been a lot of money to be made "intellectually" shilling for the already wealthy and powerful.

If a majority of media were owned by progressives as recently as 2016, most of them are still alive. Who are they and can we get them to buy back media? I really do believe that things could get better if progressives owned a majority of media, but I have been pessimistic about that because I don't think we're made of that kind of money. I'd appreciate a correction on that.
