Structural biology (XFEL crystallography, cryoEM, electron crystallography) data processing methods developer. I use my degree in chemistry to write software to use physics to understand biology. As of 2024, based in Hamburg. Ich hätte gern, wenn du mein schlecht Deutsch korrigierst, ob du das willst.

70% coffee by volume. I’m really into electronics, 3D printing, and sewing right now, and trying very hard to learn German. I have a very fluffy and affectionate cat. Big fan of bicycles and trains, better public infrastructure generally, and investment in collective wellbeing generally. Food motivated; very easily bribed with coffee and pastries. Always learning. On the spectrum (hard X-ray, ~12 keV).

I'd rather you get a sense of my values from checking my feed, but in very-very-brief, fascism is bad, open source and open science are necessary but not sufficient, and the right to repair includes yourself.

Hugs: yes please. Flirting: no thank you. Please have your bio filled out when you follow-request.

@dgar@aus.social as a general rule, the only overlap with the spoken languages is words you fingerspell, although other signs often incorporate first letters. The main thing will be whether the two people sign the same sign language, or closely related ones. There's a whole historical split between Protestant and Catholic schools for the Deaf that explains which sign languages across Europe are derived from the French vs the British type. American sign language is the French type, and the full story behind it is fascinating!

What do you do when the person you're interacting with directly is the interface to a really horrible and inadequate service? I try so hard not to take anything out on people in service jobs, and I don't know how to convey to the company responsible that this is unacceptable, without dragging this person into it somehow. Am I just being a Karen? Legit request for feedback here, including permission to tell me I am, in fact, being a Karen.

@stevegis_ssg@mas.to that's a good reminder. I usually try to thank the person for responding to the best of their ability and ask them to pass on feedback. But I have little confidence it goes anywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if it never gets forwarded at all. So I don't end up any less frustrated, and I wonder if there's something I'm missing.

@gregatron5@vmst.io I could swear I read something nearly identical years ago, but I can't find it anymore. Very frustrating, because without being able to find it I'm not sure if I've read this same person's earlier work or if he's blatantly ripping off someone else. (I'd also prefer to cite and share the version that doesn't use phrases like "I'll wait. You can't." They really grate on me.) Anyway, yes, fully agree! I feel strongly that everyone should be secure in some basic standard of living, including the dignity of not being micromanaged and judged (means-tested). I think it's important to challenge the assumption that anyone needs to deserve these things. For one thing, human rights don't have to be earned, and I think there's a strong case to be made that physical and psychological wellness (1) are human rights and (2) are not universally accessible in a system with means testing. When we try to optimize for rewarding effort, virtue, skill, or compliance, the component of judgement introduces profound negative consequences. We have to be okay with some people not doing whatever we'd like to require they do, no matter how reasonable we think the requirements are. If we can manage that shift in mindset, we have so many more beautiful possibilities.

@revoluciana@chaosfem.tw oof, so, I have complicated thoughts on this. Bear with me. When trans women in technical positions suddenly find themselves being underestimated and undermined by their colleagues who previously viewed them as competent, that is some form of privilege lost, right? But it's still worth it, so it's not so cut-and-dried as being a single, unidirectional transaction. This is where I think the concept of privilege fails us, or at least doesn't permit the necessary nuance. If we talk about protection, we can talk about appearing male as being a form of protection. It may not be healthy or wise or right, but there is some reason people might choose it anyway, and that reason can be considered a privilege, in that it's not automatic and not everyone can opt in at the drop of a hat. There are people who would choose to temporarily present as male when walking down a dark alley, but can't. They lack that option. But again, that doesn't mean it's right or worth it or comes without repercussions. It just means it's an option -- or even something that happens without their opting in -- that some people have and some don't. The way "male privilege" is usually discussed is implicitly the much more narrow case where it's consensual and without repercussions, and that's where people end up talking at cross-purposes while using ostensibly the same language.

@revoluciana@chaosfem.tw I think it's also worth considering that many forms of male privilege are bought and paid for -- at lower but nonzero price. At worst, people degrade and contort themselves to fit in a certain image because it's socially advantageous. The effeminate gay son of a "man's man" can tell horror stories of how he's forced into an image of manhood very different from how he sees himself. Is that whole experience, in context, a reflection of privilege relative to others? Hell no. Is it a reflection of how a certain type of masculinity comes with privileges, compared to the type he's comfortable with? Yes. A gay man suffering from being boxed into traditional masculinity is experiencing male privilege from one of the angles we don't normally ascribe to the term. It's being weaponized against him, as it is against trans women. He can experience some ghost of acceptance or power if he complies, and he could even turn that against someone else if he chose -- all those lawmakers who vilify and criminalize drag and end up being drag queens themselves? that right there. People wouldn't be forced into any of this if it weren't linked somehow to power. It's not remotely the same thing as the unconditional privilege of being born into wealth or high social standing, but it's a form of social currency. I think the fact that people pursue it as a matter of survival is an argument for it being a form of privilege.

@perlman@indieweb.social I don't think most people need it, as any consistent form of record-keeping becomes useful as it grows, but I have found it powerfully useful. I currently keep one vault for my research, one for German, and one for personal things, and they get varying amounts of use depending mainly on how much I use other systems, including pen and paper. I have files named methodically and deliberately planned hierarchical directory structures, as I had done with files before Obsidian, so the main things I've found useful are (1) everything in markdown, in one place, in one (tabbed) viewer, and (2) as much linking between files as I find useful (including linking to attachments). Point (1) keeps things clean and simple -- I don't get the visual overwhelm of a rich text editor with 17 icons splayed across a giant ribbon at the top, and the interface is exactly how I set it up, and won't change in an update unless I change it. I can hide anything I don't want and make near-infinite adjustments to the interface until I find it calming and unobtrusive. This massively increases my likelihood of using it. Point (2) means I can link between templates, aggregate lists, etc. and individual smaller files, drop in a PDF, reference an external directory full of audio files, and so on, so it's very hard to find anything that can't be fit at least moderately comfortably into the Obsidian system. This has made my tracking of German bureaucracy hells such as university travel authorization much easier. I have lists, they link to forms/websites/templates, my templates can be copied to new files with checkboxes and places to attach forms, etc. I could use dataview to automate some of the aggregate stuff like the list of exact dates and destinations for international travel in the time window the university needs me to report every time I request a new travel approval, but so far I just have a plain old table with links to each of the individual markdown files with all of the details of each trip. I can add another layer of complexity if and when I want it, without having to import or export or rearrange everything I've accumulated so far. I've played with more complex plugins for language learning, but ultimately I found it more trouble than it was worth, so I'm sticking to something simpler for now. The process of writing things down and deciding how to organize them inherently involves some consolidation of information, which is already most of what I wanted out of any system. I also like being able to write up long lists (e.g. chapter-by-chapter topics) and slowly generate the individual files linking back to each item on the list, which I use as a kind of progress bar. This would work on paper too, and it's approximately the system I adopted from on paper. The only differences are I won't have to worry about not being able to find or have on hand any particular physical notebook, and I can search the aggregate material. With regex, which has occasionally been very nice. The place where I find Obsidian doesn't have a good substitute on paper is mainly when working with code. There's really nice formatting with syntax recognition in fenced code blocks, and both copy-paste and links are functional in a way I can't get on paper. There's also something to be said for versioning. I keep date created and date modified at the top of each document in metadata, at minimum. I can access entries by date if I need to, which is occasionally very nice to be able to do. I think version control with git is more powerful and usually more appropriate, but not everything I do lives in git, so this is a kind of middle ground. I've had a plugin of my own in the works for a while, a feature request from a friend for a period tracker. The open source nature of plugins means I can build off of much smarter people's nice calendar interfaces and data aggregating functionality, and the local-first nature of Obsidian means she trusts her data in the plugin, but not in any app or cloud-based solution. I got distracted and haven't finished it yet, but the fact that I'm capable of this is another thing I really like. I haven't needed any functionality yet that no one else has built, but if I hit a wall somewhere, I can just go build it myself. That's really important to me. I've gotten so tired of walled gardens and rug-pulling. I lost years worth of notes once when Evernote corrupted my local files during an update, although I eventually recovered them. Even if I move away from Obsidian at some point, I can keep my notes. I'm sure this was more than you wanted, but I hope it's at least useful!

If I thought I was drinking a hot cocoa and got coffee instead, that would not be a good experience. And the tea-contaminated-with-coffee sounds pretty terrible as well -- worse to me, but I can see why it was less terrible to you. If you ever decide to drink coffee on purpose, I hope it is a much better experience, and I hope you do not have any further surprise encounters with coffee.

@courtney@pdx.social surprised and upset are not the same thing. I have work on github mainly as part of other research groups (not under my control where they put it) but also some side projects, and even if I only put new work in my own repos elsewhere, a lot of my contributions will be on github for the foreseeable future. Coming at it from a different angle, it doesn't sit right with me to shame people for getting upset about their consent being violated, regardless of whether they should know better. Practically speaking, unless my understanding of psychology is wrong, the most likely responses to this are either to dig your heels in (what I'm doing here) or to stop complaining about it and just let it happen (I am guessing you also aren't thrilled with this outcome). Don't punish the behavior you want to see, you know?
