This needs to be said in a loop until it sticks.

"What people are not getting is that we can’t turn this back – the CO2 to a large part remains in the air for thousands of years,” said Rahmstorf. “Some people think we can wait and, when it gets too bad, then we reduce emissions and things will get better again. People don’t realise that we can’t make it get better again. We can only prevent it from getting much worse.”

thinks cars pay for roads lmao, show me a solvent transportation department! Every mile driven is $5-10 of public expense, and only maybe a dollar is paid by the driver. But to collect this sweet subsidy, you need to bring a car. Price of entry to society 🙄 Drivers who talk like this just mean they want to keep "those people" [the un-car-laden] out of the neighborhood.

The POTUS continues his unconstitutional assault on free speech and freedom of the press. NYT reports the Trump administration subpoenaed three NYT journalists for reporting on security concerns about the new Air Force One that he was g(r)ifted by Qatar. From today's from page: "In some cases, the subpoenas were delivered by federal agents who showed up at reporters’ homes. The Times denounced the administration’s actions. “The appearance of federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects,” said David McCraw, The Times’s top newsroom lawyer, in a statement on Friday evening. “Our journalists report the facts and advance the American public’s right to know how their government is operating and their taxpayer dollars are being used,” Mr. McCraw wrote. “This brazen act should be seen as nothing more than an attempt to prevent the public from knowing what is happening in their country by intimidating journalists from doing their jobs.” "The subpoenas contain few specifics, asking only that the journalists testify “in regard to an alleged violation of federal criminal law.” They were issued by Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan. Mr. Clayton, who leads one of the country’s most prominent law enforcement offices, was recently nominated by Mr. Trump to serve as director of national intelligence." https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/11/business/media/new-york-times-trump-subpoenas.html #8647now

The sad irony of the blame-drivers culture, absolving traffic Engineers using that magical American scepter of Personal Responsibility, when we all know drivers aren't going to be held accountable anyway (because that would be cruel, to withhold transportation from someone, like all of those kids that aren't allowed to go even 1/2 mile from their homes without a chauffeur.)

@nathanw@metasocial.com our streets are decaying, cities are incurring debt by not being able to maintain the street at the rate of wear. What you cite is merely the national spending rate, not the actual cost of driving, which includes more than just building and maintenance of the street. And how much of that is even paid by car tax and fees?

I'm not sure that's necessary, but you do need to be aware that injuries might not be immediately obvious in the moment when adrenaline is high. Similar for damage to your bike. @Steffi@toot.wales I'm in Portland, Oregon rain. The key thing with a rain cape is how you hold the front in your hands over the handlebar. That space between your arms is the tent that keeps your lap dry, but now you can't see your e-bike screen, maybe mirror, shifter etc. It depends on the bike and cape. Mine has wide flat handles inside the front corner, some just have thumb loops.

@Steffi@toot.wales rain cape (bike-specific poncho) works well for falling rain, less well if it's blowing sideways or if you're just riding fast into it. My #umbrellaBike is a bakfiets with rain canopy on top, which gives good frontal coverage, combined with a rain cape and wool pants for most of the winter. A front rack with a large crate and backpack rain cover stretched over it gives similar protection for your knees/pantlegs to not get soaked. Breathability beats rain pants above ~freezing.

@Amgine@mamot.fr I think we could actually lower the cost of driving (not to mention living) if we simply made drivers pay for what they get and get what they pay for. Real #trafficEngineering, if there is such a government-regulated technical profession. Narrower streets cost less money, shaded asphalt bikeway and a narrow paver-covered street will both last much longer than a 5-lane stroad, besides costing less to build and maintain.

@ripienaar@devco.social @lkanies@hachyderm.io this is where I don't see the benefit of LLM generating code. If it's not the right architecture and also wrong on several details, then I'm rewriting bad code with a bad foundation. Seems easier to start from a blank slate. There is some utility in being able to quickly sketch out multiple designs, but it's all disposable. Like any code generator, you can't use it after edits, but it's also not deterministic so you can't just regenerate.
