I think I’m entering my teletype / paper terminal era. Somehow this is okay as I both loathe printers and told myself I can’t have a typewriter collection. Loophole?

Hey! I’ll be speaking at the Temple Electronics Faire this Friday 4/10! The theme of the Faire this year is _repair_ and I’ll be talking about “freephone” projects that repurpose payphones as public, free-to-use telephones, and what they mean in the context of our relationship with technology.

Oh no. The Cybiko can communicate with the DECtalk device, which now also speaks Meshtastic. What have I done.

@slgr@scholar.social I already have a few things that qualify, but am getting another and I’ve recently learned there are small, like laptopish-sized teletypes that do the same thing as the big floor models which seems like a good time!
None of this is practical but I can probably interface some weird stuff with some other weird stuff. I’m a fan of cultivating interspecies communication.

@tomnardi I think they really only publicize it through Instagram (which I don’t have) and I missed the first one and only made it to the second one because someone told me about it a few days before. I somehow got lucky randomly checking their website to be able to submit a proposal in time for this one.
This event is a bit insulated from all the other Philly area hacker stuff.

@themaritimegirl Exactly! Nothing crazy special going on, someone was talking about a little communicator someone built that sort of looked like a cybiko and it made me want to use an actual cybiko to throw something together quickly.
@ajroach42@retro.social Hey, I made an order through the New Ellijay Televison shop about 2 weeks back and haven’t heard anything. @rclayton@mastodon.sdf.org there are so many beautiful typewriters in the world but I know I’d use them as decoration more than anything else. Not that there is anything wrong with that but I have plenty of other hobbies that take up enough space as it is.
