@NudelnAlDente They were lucky to get the price of a small beer out of you. While I'd have asked the bartender for recommendations, or ordered something relatively well known, I'd also have shared some thought with them to pass on to their manager.

@electric_gumball@mastodon.social @nixCraft@mastodon.social I'm guessing the reason they started the push is to emulate the big companies that started to push it. Point your folk at the articles of the big companies who are regretting or actively walking back on it.

@jonpsp @nixCraft A stack of idle EC2 instances don't really cost anyone any money to run - so some humans are making money, it's just not the ones who need an extra $500/min.

@NatureMC@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr it is already available, though just like with helpdesk bots and similar many don't mention you're talking to a machine rather than a person. The occasional avoidable, tragic outcomes will likely not surprise you.

@dabeaz That's sad to hear, I didn't know him either but as a student and geek it saw many varied uses on my desktops. I still have the email (as I looked it up some months back) confirming that I'd actually paid to register it, having realised (and probably been prompted by someone else) that it's a massively used tool that gives no reason to register it other than the good feels of having done the right thing.

@SyHoekstra@tweesecake.social it was always a weird balance, when from basically day 2 of captchas we were using humans to train robots to read things that robots couldn't currently read. Given the humans read it incorrectly a lot of the time, it was never hard to get a robot to give the right answer in an acceptable number of tries.

@rooster@beige.party What has (so slowly) become apparent to kids over time is that university is not the path straight to middle class comfort, and that in fact there can't be a path that takes most people from childhood to an aspirational level of comfort as adults - the numbers just can't work that way.

@mjd Let's mix it up - stick with people, but again roll a dice, pick a city at rando - then throw a dart at their map to pick a location. First handful of people to walk past that location get to feature on the most recent set of euros.

@rooster@beige.party More importantly, it's a way that doesn't seem to involve actually doing any work. But just like wanting to be a footballer, model, pop star, celebrity, etc, being successful needs vast amounts of luck and skill, and any level of success may be almost immediately taken away by matters outwith your own control. Plenty of professions and trades can buy houses, but most kids don't dream of that, as it clearly involves a lot of learning, hard work and responsibility (plus still some luck)

@dalias@hachyderm.io @jerry@infosec.exchange There's always other servers for those who don't want to follow the policies of any particular instance. Migrating seems to be a low friction, almost seamless process so hardly arduous for someone not able or willing to run their own instance so hardly disruptive if a policy change occurs.

@notecharlie@social.bigcavemaps.com @SwiftOnSecurity@infosec.exchange Those people are the ones most likely to have untrustworthy carers in their lives though, and least likely to notice when the underpaid professional carer or selfish relative/neighbour has spotted the book. They're good for actually unimportant passwords, but then someone's amazoning themselves expensive gifts and no one notices for months, even if your actual bank login details aren't written down.

@nazokiyoubinbou@urusai.social @mathowie@xoxo.zone I think it's more that Ai's effect on SSD prices means more storage customers are choosing spinning rust over solid state, giving a secondary demand surge and associated price increases.

@nazokiyoubinbou@urusai.social @mathowie@xoxo.zone They may still be choosing to buy a pair of 10TB HDDs instead of 6x 2TBs. The ability to sell more mid-size HDDs obviously also will affect the extremes of the HDD market too, where platters in one enclosure sell at a premium vs buying those platters across several drives.
