Following my continued diving into NixOS'ifying my things, I wanted to see if I could get Splunk up and running. Turns out: yes. I was apprehensive since it's closed source and obviously not packaged for NixOS, but it turned out not to be too bad.
If you've ever wanted to use a NixOS VPS to run Splunk, I hope this is helpful!
It's truly remarkable how accurately The Stanley Parable predicted Claude Code, back in 2013.

Working with cardboard SUCKS and I cannot recommend doing it, but I made a lampshade and it came out really well.

I use disappearing messages with Signal on several conversations, so that messages only exist for 1-3 days before auto deleting. The other day i signed into Signal on my laptop and about a month's worth of messages populated into these conversations and then dutifully deleted themselves a few seconds later. Messages that -- in theory -- were long gone.
Does anyone know why this is so? I understand Signal has to cache messages so that people who are offline can receive them later, but it seems like not-a-good-idea to cache messages for longer than their lifetime.

Internalizing this understanding of DEI means reconstructing your self-image in a very painful way.

I'm not sure if this is just me getting older or what, and I've been a Linux user for over 20 years now, but for the last few months the predominant feeling I get when booting up my laptop is *gratitude*.
It really is remarkable how much work and effort and ingenuity and genius went into this system.
And I can just... *have* it? Like, for nothing? And then people will just *help* me with it? Just because?

Can the Core 2 Duo Pebble watch be opened up? Has anyone done this successfully?
Mine had to be replaced under warranty and the replacement has a very unevenly yellowed screen. It's really visible and jarring, looking a bit like it was unevenly colored on with an orange marker and hastily wiped off. I'm told this is because these used leftover displays from 10 years ago to make the Duos, and that the adhesive yellowing is an expected thing that they can't really do anything about it.
But they also didn't have me return my broken watch whose display is still fine, so I'm curious if I can just swap the displays somehow. Has anyone gotten these open without destroying them?
