@lproven@social.vivaldi.net I've signed it, but in a sense it's too specific, it's like conservation campaigns focusing on charismatic large mammals, and ignoring the wider ecosystem. We need a petition about the whole STFC budget and why Austerity under Labour is worse than Austerity under the Conservatives in terms of science, but they are happy to spend large amounts of money on AI. The cutbacks seem to take us back to the Johnson era, assuming zero inflation in the meantime.

"Officials hugely underestimated impact of AI datacentres on UK carbon emissions"

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/apr/24/officials-hugely-underestimated-impact-of-ai-datacentres-on-uk-carbon-emissions

"According to new data quietly published this week, energy use by AI datacentres in the UK could cause the emission of up to 123m tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) – about as much as generated by 2.7 million people – over the next 10 years."

The frequency and extremity of fire-friendly weather has been increasing for 40 years; conditions very unlikely before climate change are being seen with increasing frequency. Measured against a definition of extreme fires that combines size and intensity, the past decade has been particularly bad."

#CAMRA seem to be about to create confusion - their new strategy promotes "live beer", rather than "real ale". The two are the same thing, but their very name includes the words "Real Ale". I don't see how this rebranding helps consumers find real ale rather than "fresh beer"/"craft ale"/"nitrokeg". And then they also mention "cask beer". We need a single unifying term rather than three.

@cstross@wandering.shop "never be legally sold tobacco" is very true, they will only be illegally sold it. Apparently shops are not allowed to sell vapes to children, but still do due to lack of enforcement. I can imagine all those dodgy vape shops pivoting to cigarettes along with whatever else they have in their back rooms at the moment. Also, plenty of schoolchildren round my way smoke VERY strong cannabis, I wonder if the penalties for cigarette dealing will be worse than those for drug dealing?
