Last shop I worked in, under the last “CIO”, was very much “we know best, so just do as we say”. I don't know what most regular actual users of the tech thought of that, but within IT the bleating of the higher-ups was resoundingly ignored and/or worked around …

Looks like it was a “regular” (dual triode from the description) tube judging by the notes here but maybe made to exacting specs for use in “calculating machines”? Not really a tube guy but like the idea of heating metal until electrons are emitted …

Speaking of old A&Ws. This was built c.1972 … or so … as a new-style “coffee shop” restaurant. And by 1974 it was #Chenoys which is a recognizable name to Montreal folk. Many can probably sing the “take your tummy to Chenoy's” jungle …

As a long time fan of the franchise (like ... *long* time) it's amazing to me how poorly it has fared in the USA and how well the Canadian company has done (after being sold off by the US parent c.1972). They are EVERYWHERE here while you are hard-pressed to find one south of the border. Sure, we lost carhop service, but ... you know ... Canada. First thing the Canadian company fixed with their "coffee shop" concept.

Dunno. The Colonel himself lived in Missississauga in the latter part of his life, but don't know the story. Do remember when the company tried to downplay the “fried” in their name by using KFC on everything and PFK in QC.

Another! This one lasted until c.1982 and like the other one was carhop only. They are gone now, but the orange light standards lasted until 2009, apparently. Store itself is long-gone as with the other one.

Occasionally, you can see a long-sold off A&W store down there that has weather-beaten Burger Family statues looking sad. Sometimes repainted by new owners. Bleah.
I swear I've seen more abandoned/repurposed A&Ws in the USA than stores in business.
That said, I know a spot in the #Montréal suburbs where the c.1965 A&W driven was where the light standards are still orange! Restaurant only last 5 years, maybe.

It's DC unlike the modern MR-90 trains that used 25 kV so they need a lot more places to do the step down and rectification. The whole thing was crap from the get-go.
