I just spent the last two hours debugging the Bluetooth stack *in anger* because for the last few weeks I've had to re-pair my mouse with my laptop. Every time. Remove mouse, re-pair.
Turns out I had two identical mice in my backpack and I've been switching between them.
It was me.
Minor medical situation on the flight and it’s cool that my wife is able to jump up and help out when they ask for a licensed medical professional.
One day someone will need a regular expression so I stay ready.
iOS is redoing Screen Time just in time for my kids to graduate from high school
If you loved the Living Computer Museum in Seattle as much as I did, you should know that SO MANY of those systems are still alive and running at http://icm.museum?donate under the same stewardship of Stephen Jones who was also at LCM. Heading back to Portland after a hard but energizing week at BUILD. What a lovely team.
Last year Mark Russinovich and I wrote a paper on how Software Engineering will redefine the profession, and how early in career engineers may see an “AI Drag,” while seniors will see a significant boost. This paper was published today in the Communications of the ACM, Association for Computing Machinery
The real story though, is that we propose a program where companies must invest deeply in our EiC pipeline, not just hiring juniors but giving them formal *preceptors* (modeled after nursing) such that we create a strong pipeline of new senior engineers to take on the coming industry challenges.
Please read and share if it resonates with you!
Had an amazing two days speaking to thousands of developers on how to navigate the uncertain future.
One thing that really struck me though was the number of times people said things like I read your book in high school or I learned this language from your video, and now these folks are senior engineers at big companies
I’ve only been doing this for like what, five years? Crazy 👴

Tech Promised Everything. Did it deliver? | Scott Hanselman | TEDxPortland
Virtual Desktops on Windows aren't used enough. Mac has the "maximize to Virtual Desktop" button so I did a similar thing for Windows. Please go test it and file issues. SHIFT-CLICK on the Maximize button will maximize a window to a new Virtual Desktop. Also a hotkey. https://github.com/shanselman/MaximizeToVirtualDesktop/releases/tag/v0.0.1
I saw this article about a new Mac featured called "Edge Light" that literally puts a fake white ring light around your screen. It's kinda insane and genius. So I vibed it for Windows. https://github.com/shanselman/WindowsEdgeLight get it from Releases, unzip and run the single .NET 10 exe. Will autoupdate also.
So this happened…
