I recently finished a book about Wayfinding. Not about signs and arrows, but about how our brain functions. It was a fascinating read and I realised cycling ticks a lot of the boxes if you want to maintain a healthy brain. Let's look how wayfinding works and how your brain is involved. #Biketooter #Health #Ottbike http://hansonthebike.com/2026/08/08/want-better-brains-start-cycling/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=jetpack_social

Late June, we biked to the south end of Orléans from Nepean. Finding a route away from motorised traffic was a bit of a challenge because of the provincial highways and busy arterials, but we managed mostly on pathways in the end. #ottbike #Biketooter #cycling #Ottawa http://hansonthebike.com/2026/07/17/finding-a-route-to-orleans-souths-avalon-ottawa/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=jetpack_social

Cycling from Nepean to Orleans in Ottawa is not so easy if you want to avoid busy roads. We found a bypass behind 'Big Al'

It has taken Belgium and the Netherlands by storm, but in the rest of the world, a wayfinding system based on nodes is not known. For fun, as a thought exercise, I created a recreational #bicycle network for Ottawa-Gatineau, based on nodes to see if that could work. As a bonus, I added numbered nodes. #ottbike #BikeTooter #cycling #bike

Earlier this week I read a column by a #Dutch #architect who compares leaving his lawn chair in the street and what we would think of that. Yet car parking... I am publishing his column "Parking is not a birth right" in English today with his permission. #Ottcity #Ottawa

Over the last few years, #Ottawa has built no less than 10 protected intersections on a stretch of road from Churchill to Bronson, a serious number on such a short stretch to make walking and cycling safer. I biked the 4.5 km and checked out this rather unique improvement .#ottbike #biketooter #ottcity

The rain was supposed to start at 5 pm so we cheerfully went out by bike to see friends in the east end in #Ottawa. Nearly all separate #bike infrastructure. Which is really cool. Not so cool was that the rain started at 3 pm instead (what happened to weather forecasts) and we had to bike back for an hour and a bit in drizzle and 7 degrees. Nevertheless, nice to be out on my first 30 km bike ride this year.

Just before the snow came, I cycled all the parking lots on Merivale Road in Central Nepean in #Ottawa to check which food places are new and which ones have gone. Here is the 2026 update. I am actually not much of a diner myself, so I refrain from trying the food. I leave that to those with a more refined taste.

@human3500@ottawa.place work has restarted on Fisher at McCooey. That large concrete circular piece has now been lowered in the hole.

Also, a crane has been erected at the Lone Star plaza for the 24 story rental tower.

@uxMark@cosocial.ca to be honest, I think they ll charge you 5 times as much for it. I am kind impressed they can make such a high quality sign for so little money. In Ottawa it would 150 dollars for a sign on corrugated plastic.

In Canada, Canada was 8th at the Olympic Games, but in the rest of the world Canada ended 11th. It all depends what you count. Canada arrived with 207 olympians (hockey teams add up), the Netherlands with 39, Norway with 80. Funding is what several people pointed at as a reason for reaching the top, not necessarily a large population.

@human3500@ottawa.place it is unbelievable really, I took a pic in august assuming it was nearly done. I am puzzled what takes so long. It appears the big elements to finish it lying in the farm are all there. Perhaps rerouting cable work around the big hole?

In the last quarter of 2025, #Apple shipped 19,600,000 Ipads. Let that sink in. That is 213,000 every single day. And virtually all will be obsolete in ten years and end up on the e-waste conveyor belts. Including other brands, 192 million tablets were shipped in 2025, or around half a million every day.

iPad Demand Surges as Apple Strengthens Grip on Tablet Market

Apple expanded its lead in the global tablet market in late 2025 as overall shipments rebounded, according to new research from Omdia. Global tablet shipments reportedly reached 162 million units in 2025, representing 9.8% year-over-year growth. The research firm said the strongest momentum occurred during the holiday quarter, when shipments reached 44 million units, also up 9.8% compared to the same quarter a year earlier.

I took myself up to Moreelse Bridge and, looking down on the central station, contemplated over my style of travelling with a Brompton folding bike and an Interrail ticket. On my way from Austria back to Stockholm, Sweden, I am taking a relaxing stopover in the Netherlands. #Brompton #BikeTooter

@hazematman@mastodon.social I never cycle a single meter on Merivale. I use the streets behind it and coming in from the back of the malls and/or via side streets. Many malls have a connection at side streets too and I often just bike from mall to mall via parking lots and shortcuts. Granted, I don’t have to be there often. If you look a bit closer on the map (I have added a pdf to the post now) you’ll notice the friendlier bike routes.
