@GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai @killick@dmv.community @cobalt123@beige.party @karlbode.com @msbellows@c.im I think the last good thing he did was as mayor of SF, legalizing gay marriage. Since becoming governor it's been an endless stream of vetoes for any legislation that helps workers or hurts corporations.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai Diesel is close to $7/gallon here in Oregon. That's the highest I have seen. A few years ago a lot of right wingers were screaming every time the price of gas or diesel went up $0.20. Now that their guy is literally causing it they're all silent. I hope it goes to $8 nationwide for the month before mid terms.

@ascentale@sfba.social @edd@freeradical.zone @bikenite@fedigroups.social A4: depends on if it's an organized century or you're doing it on your own. Usually the organized rides have decent food and water support at rest stops. On your own you need to figure out sources of water and bring enough food. Or stop and buy some. As far as tools and parts I don't bring anything more than what I'd take for a regular ride- multi tool, spoke wrench, pump, tube and patches.

@grammasaurus@mastodon.social @ascentale@sfba.social @edd@freeradical.zone @bikenite@fedigroups.social I took a long break like that on my very first century. Getting back on the bike hurt! and that was when I was 26. Unless it's a social ride I prefer to keep moving. For races that's imperative. But for all long rides eating and drinking is important. If you get behind on either its hard to catch up.

@r343l@freeradical.zone @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @Doctor_J_@mastodon.social We did exactly that before committing to going all electric in our new house. The first time we used the induction "burner" we were blown away at how good it was. Not only boiling water fast but control too. The decision was easy. I'm SO glad to not need propane!

@sarae@ecoevo.social @ProPublica@newsie.social I moved my 401k out of each employer's system when I left that company. The last couple charged a significant fee to do it, $75-100. For what is basically just changes in a couple databases. They have to grab some on the way out. That should be regulated or banned.

@MLE_online@social.afront.org Those were common when I was a kid in the '70s. Usually conduit with flattened ends jammed onto the fork of a 20" Stingray bike, which is what everyone had. They always looked like they handled poorly and didn't steer well, especially at low speeds. Kids with cool dads had them weld the pipes on.

@ai6yr @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite I got some Light and Motion lights back when I was on the race team and they were a sponsor. They've lasted for at least 13 years of frequent use. When I need more I'll gladly pay full retail for them. Before the L&Ms I had some Magicshines off DealExtreme (China), but they did not last all that long.

WatchDuty is an app that has info on fires. Formed by a tech person who moved to rural property in California and found there wasn't much info for ongoing fires. Rather than try to get richer off it, they made it a non profit. They have humans who monitor all the fire radio and other sources and post concise timely reports on the app. The app also links to the network of fire cams. You can watch the positions of fire fighting aircraft. That might be a premium thing. This is one of the few apps that I'll pay for a premium sub. Lately they have integrated weather station and air quality info.

@petrillic@hachyderm.io @MLE_online@social.afront.org Tight cycling clothes have their purposes. Tight jerseys don't flap in the wind. That's annoying and slows you down. Loose shorts are worse as they can cause saddle sores from chafing. Obviously these are not problems for utility cyclists who are going relatively short distances but they are for people who are putting a lot of miles in. I finished the first day of one very hard race (120 miles and 15,000' of climbing each day) with saddle sores the size of dollar coins, from shorts very slightly too loose. The next day's stage was excruciating.

@celesteh In the '90s I was involved with the Cypherpunks because it was a place to discuss cryptography. There were a lot of proto technolibertarians on there who had more interest in politics. A viewpoint espoused by some was that people and businesses should be free to engage in racism and sexism without interference from the government. They'd follow that with something like "of course it would be dumb for a business to not serve because they'd lose customers, but they should be free to do it".

So far it's gone from nothing to an estimated 1000 acres in three house. 75 to 1000 in the last hour. They have air tankers from Redding and eastern Washington doing drops. Normally there would be tankers stationed here but for some reason they wern't.

There was a radio message from dispatch enumerating the people and equipment on the way. Trucks, crews, dozers, water tanker trucks, etc. They mentioned that the order for overhead hasn't been filled yet. They used the same term in the '80s when I was on fire crew. I always found it amusing that the management team for big fires is explicitly called overhead.

There's already mandatory evacuation for one zone. Like a lot of western states, Oregon is split up into fire evacuation zones. If you live in any sort of rural area you try to remember your zone. There are apps that will notify you when your zone has an evacuation order and let you monitor fires. One of the uses for apps that I approve of.

The near by fire I posted about the other day has continued growing. Until last night we were lucky and the wind was blowing the smoke away from us. Some other folks were not so lucky and got the smoke. Now it's our turn. The nearest AQI sensor is reporting in the 400s. I turned off the HRV last night. The "carbon" HVAC filter I installed is not good enough to keep the stink out even if it filters the PM. It's got maybe an ounce of carbon in it. I kind of thought that would happen. I'll have to look into adapting one of those large carbon filters sold for filtering the stink from marijuana greenhouse exhaust. The kind with many pounds of carbon.

@mhoye@cosocial.ca I've seen that too, and for really obscure items like bicycle parts and ranching supplies. One tip was everything was marked down 70% off. Recently registered domain was another. The scams are getting better.

@MLE_online@social.afront.org If the logos are from the local bike shop or construction company, the rider's a member of a local amateur racing club. If you're racing as an amateur, all the members of a team in the race are required to wear the same jersey. It's so competitors can recognize who will be working together tactically. You're also not allowed to wear a jersey that's obviously from an organization you're not in, like a pro team. Or even worse, a national team jersey. I have sees refs tell guys on the starting line to go change jerseys. When I was amateur racing I had no problem wearing the club jersey plastered with the logos of the local companies sponsoring the club. I would never wear a pro team jersey though.

@MLE_online@social.afront.org with that much wear the cassette cogs and chainrings may be worn out too. Even if the new chain runs ok on them, the worn parts will make the new chain wear out faster. I like to replace chains before they're worn out. Like at .75 on the Park chain checker or at the first sign of deteriorating shifting. The cassettes and chainrings last longer that way, and they're usually much more expensive than chains.
