Stumbled upon this golden joke that says volumes:
WinRAR is more profitable than OpenAI.

mastodon 4.7.3My name is Ivan. I'm from Kazakhstan. I am: Christian, Russian, translator, in that particular order, probably.
I'm very enthusiastic about open-source and BSD/Linux systems in particular.
I spend my days on my keyboard and in my books.
RE: @Khrys@mamot.fr
Countless open source projects in dire need of talented contributors, and this educated and quite competent guy comes and gracefully does the most atrocious thing possible instead. What a story. =)
This is so funny: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-Old-Network-AI
So, Linux drops support for many old network drivers from ISA and PCMCIA era, and the reason is AI.
Andrew Lunn says:
"These old drivers have not been much of a Maintenance burden until recently. Now there are more newbies using AI and fuzzers finding issues, resulting in more work for Maintainers. Fixing these old drivers make little sense, if it is not clear they have users."
Basically, maintainers are tired of a flood of annoying mails about vulnerabilities in old drivers (who knows how many of them are false positives), so it's easier to just drop support altogether.
AI was supposed to make everyone's life easier, right? =)
I'm not a programmer by trade, but seeing how every (it seems) open source project founded and managed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts turns to vibecoding makes me wonder:
Why do you people hate programming so much as to make someone (something?) else code instead of you?
I mean, it is clear that vibecoding in enthusiast OSS projects is a way to NOT code. Why bother then?
Exquisite.tube is a very strange place indeed!
What the hell, another day, another browser.
Turns out, Google Chrome silently installs 4GB Google Nano LLM model on every device for its AI features. Without permission. By default.
https://www.thatprivacyguy.com/blog/chrome-silent-nano-install/
I couldn't care less for carbon footprint, but 4GB of bandwidth is the thing I will most certainly notice, because with my ISP it would take an hour or two on good days to download.
And they drop it on every single device using Chrome. Unless you explicitly disable it in chrome://flags
This is crazy. I mean, we didn't expect less from Google.
@hi Well, yeah, but that's how we did it back in the days, right?
I had Nokia 3310 and a huge CD player in its own bag stuffed with like a dozen CDs. This bag had a whole system of straps, so you couldn't just TAKE the player, you had to EQUIP it. Only later I bought a tiny mp3 player that had crazy 256 MB of memory.
@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk Your points are totally fair, I think.
But I'd like to point out that you're "infinitely more" sovereign than any usual person or entity that relies on SaaS products.
Because while you rely on other people's work, that work had already been done. And if perchance Internet disappeared, your systems air-gapped or else, you'd still be able to exist quite fine. You don't need a huge staff of your ISP, Cloudflare, Amazon, Microsoft and so on to support you. Given the need you can even develop the software you use further all by yourself or in a small group of enthusiasts.
Fun fact: if you're dualbooting with Windows 11, it silently changes default boot order in UEFI to ensure it always boots first. I think there's no way to change that behavior.
