@MissConstrue@mefi.social I must sadly concur. His background is highly suspicious, although I would never put it past a person to reform and mature with age. But there's a difference between being a GOP voter at 19 and doing what this man did in those countries or on behalf of an organization like Blackwater (w/ or w/o the tat). Then throw in his treatment of & behavior around women. There is something about populism that periodically attracts people like him, & it's disturbing.

@arstechnica@mastodon.social BlackRock's Larry Fink has done the same thing. At the end of the day, it shows that for any corporation, it comes down to money. They will do what helps them make a profit. Diversity means zilch to them, except when there's a perceived financial & PR benefit.

@Strandjunker As an American, even now in my 60s, I live in fear of this for me and my family. Almost all of my savings is in anticipation of this possible outcome, knowing it could still bankrupt me if we all go down at the same time (since insurance has so many holes on it). That’s the evil of our system. To everyone else in the industrialized world, look at us, & whatever else you do never, ever imitate our healthcare system.

And we have to know it will not stop at this. Today, self-attestation. Tomorrow, once they realize 15-year-olds lie about their age, gov’t ID. And when people cheat by using VPNs, they will ban VPNs. People in open source, stop sticking our heads in the sand. This is the beginning of the end of privacy on the internet.

I live in a country that is a car-ridden, monied hellscape. Think what we will about China, but they just started banning cars in Beijing right before the Olympics. It can be done. We just choose to do nothing. And we're to the point that taking a multi-generational approach is too long under the environmental circumstances.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I’ve been saying this for the longest time, Linus Torvalds at this point is a paid representative for Microsoft. He draws a multimillion dollar salary from the donations of Microsoft, Google, & Meta & rewards them with board membership of TLF. And TLF has been spending millions more on AI the last several years than on kernel maintenance. We should not be surprised that Linus talks like the CEO of Microsoft when defending AI. He’s just another stockholder. Sad, but that’s reality.

@veronica Debian is a great distribution. It needs configuration, & I’d advise any new to Linux user to please look up some instructionals on YouTube & pay attention to the boards. One thing I love about Debian is even the unstable is pretty stable, & you can get something close to rolling release w/o too much worry.

@veronica@explains.social Kdenlive is a great piece of software. The people complaining about it should really reconsider and maybe donate the money they used to pay for their software (cough, Adobe) on Windows to the Kdenlive team (all open source and most of its devs are volunteers).
