Stupid question: can someone tell me the name of this type of graph? And maybe point me towards a tool for creating them?

@stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe This has these vibes all over it. And I feel your pain seeing clients try to apply solutions suitable for Google and Meta scale infrastructures to the most basic problems.
Schools aren't helping either. It's one curriculum for everyone and little or no attempt to contextualize when to use which tool

@soph@grrl.me Well, someone has to pay for all of the multibillion $ new datacenters to run this stuff…
Guess what? That’s the consumer who was told that “inference is going to zero” and well, … it’s not.
All those managers who thought this was a better bet than negotiating salaries for their developers are now confronted with price hikes where they have zero leverage or negotiation power

Join a union, join a neighborhood group, join an association, whatever it takes to unify decent people to shift the momentum towards purging the parasites from modern society.
Not a uniquely American problem, but further along the curve (not counting Russia) so please show the world it can be done

@WPalant@infosec.exchange Somewhat related to the people in school that immediately “turn to page 265 for the answer”. You have an answer, which looks obvious in retrospect, but your brain never took the path of looking at the problem space in order to learn *how* to get to that answer

@0xabad1dea @dalias 😳 so basically Chrome is hacking the filesystem ACLs in order to force download the model file? That's...not good
Note to self: check on the machine with Chrome to see what it is doing (only around because Proxmox consoles don't do extended chars on non-US keyboards on any other browser)

@ArtHarg@mastodon.nl @mattsheffield@mastodon.social Definitely reflects my lived experience. Especially the bilingual part. There’s no “native” language being translated from words to other words.
On the AI front, I think the argument is perhaps backwards as this demonstrates that language is the method for encoding communication (and stored communication as information), but it’s *not* the mechanism for encoding *thought*

@TheBulletin@social.techreclaimers.club Then there’s those of us so old that we collected CDs (and borrowed from friends), ripped them into our local libraries and just kept on doing that over the years to the point when streaming came along, it was already competing with more music that I could listen to in a year.
Keep up the good work and helping people get out from under YASS (Yet Another Subscription Service)

@ancoghlan@mastodon.social @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online Thank you - I read the first part and my brain jumped immediately to all of your arguments. An effective developer should also be managing security risk, technical debt, performance and maintainability. If a dev organization doesn't empower their employees to solve for these requirements as part of their core responsibility then WTF are you even doing?

@jasongorman@mastodon.cloud Also, if you're not used to doing TDD, it takes an effort and flexing some mental muscles differently.
Worth it, but like anything that's worth it, there's an effort and an investment to make up front for payoffs over time

@idren@mstdn.ca @cthulku@zeroes.ca A good question, but the difference is in the controlled market nature of alcohol where provincial agencies have the monopoly (or near) on the product. There’s one choke point and the federal gov’t can say « it wasn’t me »

@socketwench@masto.hackers.town @lrhodes@merveilles.town Good point. The market system is based on making bets about how much growth is available. Anything running steady-state isn't interesting other than for vulture capital to buy, extract all the capital and leave it to die while trying to get out the debt-load that was imposed on it.

Hoping your ACL mods are a reasonable block strategy...
