Fedilab Apps
This account is dedicated for news about FOSS apps: Fedilab, TubeLab, UntrackMe, OpenMultiMaps
Dropping the Google version of the app was a pleasure. I could finally remove all their restrictions:
- Register an account with #Fedilab
- Donation links
- Hard-coded filters for #PeerTube containing "download" and "YouTube"
The APK that I attach to release notes is signed with the same key, so Play users can install it over their current version.
I know Google is the best way to be known, but it has a price I am no longer willing to pay.
Leaving Google is really a matter of patience. They first told me it was not possible because of UntrackMe, which has been suspended. Then they asked me to open one ticket per app for GDPR compliance:
- an old version of Fedilab they removed
- a Mobilizon app
- TubeLab
- Fedilab (current version) And the suspended one, because I can't delete them myself. They first replied that it needed further investigation, then that I should not open so many tickets while they had asked me to 🤪
My TOP 3 improvements of
over the last year were...
- Reverse timeline reading order
- Reload all timelines at once
- Fix timeline being offset after restart
It also became faster, and much more stable for me.
What were your favorite improvements?
I swore not to speak about #FediHood any more, but what #Pixelfed is doing is great news for #ActivityPub.
Pixelfed already sends the location as a Place object with latitude and longitude, so FediHood can read it and put markers on a map.
Local timelines used to mean one instance. Now they can mean people actually around you.
This would be the first time I do not follow poll results. Google is simply not made for people like me.
I am a solo dev, and exposing myself is not a good solution. Why should I have to make a personal address and phone number public? I sell nothing.
I am very uncomfortable with this, and I should not have to expose myself.
#Fedle received several fixes.
- Spanish now treats Ñ as its own letter, and its dictionary has been improved.
- It also fixes federation issues for #Misskey and #Sharkey.
- Announcements and results now have a dedicated tag per language, like #Fedle_es, #Fedle_en etc.
#Fedle is a daily word game on the #Fediverse.

Concerning #Fedilab issues, I am currently working with Marco on those flagged as high priority. https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/issues?q=&type=all&sort=relevance&labels=2021215&state=open
I am still closely watching crash reports. The idea is not to work on new features while annoying bugs remain unfixed.
Did you know that to be available on Google, I had to:
- Remove donation links
- Hard-coded censorship
- Create a dedicated account so they can log into it
I am really upset by this difference in strictness, where I am stuck. This cost a lot of energy because they made everything simple for the end user but not for the devs. All these actions are not for protecting you, it's for controlling you.
Choose #FDroid
I only keep my Google dev account for #Fedilab.
You can also get it through #FDroid or the APKs I publish.
If you use https://fdroid.fedilab.app you get updates immediately.
Should I keep publishing Google releases?
