the cyberpunk present is weird as fuck: the latest Shai Hulud malware wave contains an LLM prompt to create biological weapons and nuclear weapons, with the purpose to trip LLM safety refusals so that LLM-based code scanning wont see the malware https://socket.dev/blog/mini-shai-hulud-miasma-and-hades-worms-target-bioinformatics-and-mcp-developers-via-malicious

the problem with writing about 'the purpose of a system is what it does' is that it makes you realise that the purpose of open protocols is to have protocol wars, people fucking love to argue about their protocol as a teamsport

@benpate@mastodon.social i think "better safety tooling" is a bit of a red herring, because the real problem is in figuring out who has the authority to set boundaries. assume the current fediverse/mastodonishverse/whatever to be a "bounded space". exact boundaries and technical details dont matter yet. it is a shared "space", that has some boundaries and values that people want enforced within those boundaries. (examples can be "no cloudflare" or "relays should be optin", or whatever) /1

whats so annoying about the perpetual myth here on fedi is the idea 'oh selfhosting gotosocial is cheap and this is ridiculously expensive on bluesky', not only because its wrong, but because it misses the much more interesting question of considering it is possible run a selfhosted singleperson appview on atproto, why is barely anyone doing it?

Got a new Gouda pottery plate for my collection at koningsdag vrijmarkt. Already had the wall plate, and new one turns out to be from same painter, dating from 1920. Very happy with this find

@benpate@mastodon.social yeah, my most radical opinion is that i dont think servers actually exist, in the sense that they dont actually meaningfully play a part in either how we understand the socially constructed object 'fediverse', nor in how this "fediverse" again shapes our social understanding (via the posts entering our feeds through which we create our social perception of the fediverse)

@benpate@mastodon.social so now you want to improve this "bounded space" with some rule/tool/thing, that makes the space "safer" (for any definition of safer) the core problem is that the functionality of this Thing are contested by its nature, but that there is no source of authority who can make the decision for the entire space (decentralisation yadiyada) so any rule/tool/thing that matters cannot get community buy-in because it is contested and nobody can dissolve the contestation /2

@benpate@mastodon.social calling cloudflare fascist is very easy. figuring out a rule/thing/object that causes 'no cloudflare' in this bounded space is hard, and implementing that rule/thing/object is literally impossible thats why were stuck in this endless cycle of discourse and yelling, because there is no structural way to break out of it

worth taking a read at how seriously asian countries are taking this, and are preparing for the energy crisis, with things like the filipino gov already mandating energy rationing https://darimulut.substack.com/p/getting-slugged-at-the-bowser-from

just to spell it out explicitly: around 20% of global energy supply went *poof*, and now that Hormuz is getting mined that supply aint getting back to original levels for months, and thats the positive scenario like, this is catastrophically bad, prepare accordingly, imagine its like its februari 2020

@UlrikeHahn the people from stream.place also got very excited about this recently: https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-nandakumar-atproto-atom-00.html sorta directionally similar to peertube in the sense that they are both trying to solve for how to video CDN primitives into the social protocol layer

@UlrikeHahn another vibe guess is that the interesting thing here is probably neither activitypub nor atproto, but figuring out distributed CDNs, which is most likely agnostic to either atproto or activitypub. peertube's work with p2p streaming is probably relevant here

i dont know how household energy contracts work in other countries, but here in the netherlands you can have contracts that are marketprices or contractually set prices for a fixed period (1, 2 or 3 years usually). HIGHLY recommended to set fixed prices for as long of a time as possible and to do this ASAP

@rra@post.lurk.org @liaizon@social.wake.st @jackperkins@post.lurk.org and considering that the actual problem isnt really vibe coding in itself, its about how you trust other servers to follow security conventions in a trustless environment. its just that vibe coded servers have a larger chance of not doing that so the upside here is that we already had this problem anyway, and because everyone here hates vibecoding we now have a potential way in to start adressing the root structure of the problem

@rra@post.lurk.org i think it will be good for the collective safety model in this space because while vibe coding brings it to the foreground that you cannot assume on remote software being safe, that assumption was never valid to begin with

theres some pretty high profile fediverse software with some pretty serious safety issues, and thats all handcoded not vibecoded

@UlrikeHahn if thats true (no idea, this was just quick searching) than the main contributor to energy usage is actually not video CDNs, but devices that do autoscroll videos. so if youd want to optimise for lower carbon footprints youd want a protocol that either deprioritises the possibility to have autoscroll video, or has a flexible frontend/client layer that allows people to select clients that dont use autoscroll for video

@tchambers@indieweb.social Hey Tim, can we get an official statement on what indieweb.social's policy is regarding federating with Threads moving forward?

I am not comfortable that the server is federating with Meta, considering what has happened this week. I think we should not federate with a server that actively promotes harm this way. Federation decisions should also be made on the grounds of the ethics of the other entity that we're federating with, and not only on grounds of specific post violations.

@liaizon@social.wake.st the core problem is that the software he wrote is premised on the idea of puppylovers and puppykillers both being able to join the network, and giving people tools so that they dont have to see the puppykillers, even though they are active on the network
