advice to those interested in netbsd
I see lots of people getting interested in NetBSD recently to reduce their reliance on the Linux kernel and parts of its ecosystem they are unhappy with (e.g. systemd, glibc, flatpak, wayland, etc.) I think this is a good idea! However, I would probably avoid trying to completely divest yourself of that world right away. The BSDs (and other less mainstream operating systems) have thousands or millions of times less work put in (for both time and money) and so there will inevitably be gaps, bugs, shortcomings, or challenges. To avoid getting frustrated or burning yourself out I'd encourage you to treat it as an experiment and figure out what things you _can_ do. Maybe your server(s) can run it fine, but it won't for you on desktop. Maybe you can keep a secondary comptuer (e.g. netbook) around but still need Linux/Mac/whatever for a few important tasks. I think that is totally ok! And rather than bemoaning how far behind something like NetBSD feels I'd encourage you to find ways to adapt or contribute. For context: I've been using NetBSD since about 2001 across many platforms (68k and ppc Macs, 32-bit and 64-bit intel and ARM, sparc, etc.) but I've always had machines running another OS like Linux or MacOS. Good luck and happy sysadmin day! 🚩

re last retweet: my #uxn ROM for solitaire is 17K but that's with graphics, a font, and no attempt to minimize. i bet i could make a really tiny console version if i put my mind to it.

@b0rk@social.jvns.ca one of the really sad things about this moment is that it seems like LLMs work best (fsvo "work" and "best") when interfacing between a person and a predictable/reliable/deterministic thing (such as a programming language type system for example) but instead people seem to be trying to replace all the predictable/reliable/deterministic things in our world with LLMs (which are not predictable, reliable, or deterministic). i feel this is especially true for search engines.
