@Tatjna@moo.nz I think the most chilling stuff is later in the piece. "30 per cent of the world’s helium supply: gone. 30 to 50 per cent of fertiliser: gone. Half the planet’s industrial sulphuric acid: gone. Not “supply disrupted.” Not “temporarily off market.” Gone. Blown to fuck by Israeli and American strikes on Iranian processing infrastructure that the Pentagon either didn’t know existed or didn’t care about." I expected bad, this is worse.

@RyChaz aside from the numerous other issues with this, I noticed recently that the pharmacy in Woolworths Whanganui has shut because of a nationwide shortage of pharmacists. Does Seymour think that pharmacists are sitting on their hands all day, with capacity for this additional work he's asking of them?

@davemosk @Niall @phil_stevens this individual action stuff is a distraction, not that you shouldn't take it, but it's not going to solve our problems. Fossil fuels are dominant because of years of lobbying, policy decisions, and subsidies. Individual action is not going to make cities that were designed for cars suddenly pedestrian friendly. Big companies love recycling and carbon footprints, because a focus on individual action distracts from holding companies responsible and from policy.

@BobLefridge@mastodon.nz surely declaring that you think the laws of New Zealand do not apply to you should be an instant disqualification from gun ownership. And most things that are privileges and not rights. Why would we trust people who don't consider the law to apply to them to obey the road rules?

RE: @grahamdunning@post.lurk.org

If you have an interest in music as experimentation and exploration, this is worth your time. Graham has created a framework, a wonderful environment that puts his work in rich rich constraints that he finds so much to discover within.

@vampirdaddy@chaos.social @fasnix@fe.disroot.org I'm also mindful of the impact on the people whose livelihoods are tied to these things. @Tatjna@moo.nz posted elsewhere about having done a big (expensive) fertilize this year, because who knows what fertilizer will be available next year. I'm in small town South Taranaki, and whilst I don't personally work on the land, a lot of friends and locals do. Disruption to farming will really hurt this community.

NZ Politics
I just realised something that makes it clear how terrible and unreasonable the coalition has been. Imagine if some variant of our left wing bloc get in next election, and operate the same way, under urgency the whole time moving society to the left as far as they can. What a terrible precedent that sets, having that be how governing is done; that level of fluctuation in the ground rules as normal, all across society, is corrosive.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama Having just shared Neil Young, I'm now sharing this for the line: "Well, I hope Neil Young will remember, a Southern man don't need him around anyhow." I do enjoy the story of how people thought Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil Young had major beef, but actually the song is pretty tongue in cheek, and they all got along fine. https://youtu.be/6GxWmSVv-cY #JukeboxFridayNight #MusiciansAndMusic

Bullion - God Only Knows The first track from Bullion's album "Songs in the Key of Dee", which is a mash up of J-Dilla and the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. This is hands down my favourite mash up album, I listen to it regularly. Incredible. I don't know if you can download it any more, but I have a copy if you ask me nicely. https://youtu.be/icZ7Ij1nTdc #MusicMusiciansAndMashups #JukeboxFridayNight

@iju @cstross I'm not trying to convince the elites here, I'm talking everyday people who got taken in by the trans people in sports bullshit for example. I literally used the Epstein line recently on someone close to me whose heart is in the right place but was taken in for a while by TERFs writing for a magazine they read, pointed out some of the columns they talked about to me last year happened because of Epstein money.

The wife and I did a workshop with you in London in maybe 2019, and I think we saw you do a couple of shows, and were impressed with what you were doing (and loved getting to work with your instruments), but this is incredible, you have such a vocabulary, you've invented this niche to work in and found so much there. Great work, and thanks for sharing it.

Replying to
@Veticia @rastilin @aurynn @xssfox it's still a single machine. Things fail other than disks. If that machine fails, can you quickly fail over to another machine? Aurynn can easily stand up and fail over to replacement instances if the hardware she's on fails. You're telling Aurynn that her service is over-engineered, without knowing the SLAs Aurynn is trying to work to. And I'll tell you now, they're SLAs that you cannot meet with a single physical machine.

objectively the opposite of how we should be building instances

Excuse me? Says who? Objective?

Aurynn wants high availability for her instance. Her users are willing to pay for that. I don't see how anyone else gets a say in whether that's the right way to do things or not.

To be clear, I don't have a problem with you all running on big chunks of physical hardware. We all get to choose, that's the joy.

@nick @Veticia if you think that's the next Google you've got another thing coming. I'll tell you right now that's a relatively simple cloud infrastructure.

How much are fedi users actually harmed if there’s downtime on their instance?

Once again: we all get to choose, that's the joy. You don't have to choose that, but if people do, they're not doing you any harm, and you should butt out.

@feditips@mstdn.social it's worth noting that for Android at least, the lead developer has told me in Github issues it's intended to be a simpler experience, and that is why it doesn't have some features. I wish Mastodon made that clearer, and I'm hoping they will.

@Veticia @nick you've told me about two other instances, that organize their hardware in two different ways to meet different user requirements and availability requirements. This says nothing about Cloudisland and its choices. I seriously don't understand what you're trying to prove at this point. Please stop. I'm bored now.

@eliotlear@mastodon.social @mechko@chaos.social the blog talks about why that is; because it's already been security analysed by many models. The conclusion Daniel reaches is (my paraphrase) LLM models really are good for security analysis, but Mythos is overhyped, and not much better than the other models they've already used.
