Dear #LazyWeb (especially in Aotearoa New Zealand) :

Does anyone have the link to the research about how air filters in classrooms increases academic performance

and the air quality standards for classrooms (eg, network CO2 sensors). I've found some PDFs for this but not really a good overview, and they all seem to be optional and not mandatory.

Do I trust my UPS batteries enough that I can whip out the cable, add a ESPhome plug, and plug them back in again without causing them to keel over?

7am and the ground is all crispy and frosty. -3° #EV is all toasty warm, pre-heated, warm steering wheel, no frost on the windows. Next to it the diesel Ute can barely be seen under a thick layer of ice. Good thing I don’t need to run it today. It would take ages to warm up, even if the engine could turn over. Hope the battery is new because the cold weather kills those 12V batteries so often. Just one of many ways EVs are worse than diesel. https://sdc.org.nz/notes/better-ev

When I’ve asked politicians why they’re not funding conservation or other useful work I express the requested budget in terms of metres of expressway. “For just five metres of expressway you could run this project for 3 years!!!” Gives them a bit of a pause. Solar subsidy better value than winter payment

An energy hardship researcher at Otago University is suggesting repurposing the winter energy payment and putting that money towards solar subsidies for households. Senior research fellow Kimberley O'Sullivan says because the price of power has increased so much in recent years, the winter payment covers less and less heating. She says switching the half a billion dollars the Government spends on the programme to #solar ...

This is where online shopping really hurts us. We pick a specific brand, grown in a specific place (if we can read the country of origin) and then they’ll substitute another brand grown in a country I don’t trust. It’s also annoying that somehow “Packaged in NZ from imported ingredients” is somehow allowed. My local shop selling local pea protein told me that it comes in a container from overseas and they slap a label on it. @aligorith@mastodon.nz

Fracking turned the US oil industry into an oil and gas (methane) industry. Gas pipelines have been built to allow methane to be transported rather than flared (or silently leaked) at the well head. Lots of these new data centres have gas generators burning the “waste gas”. Take a look at the xAI data centre and the NAACP lawsuit against it. With this threatened build in Utah now the pollution will be in white people’s backyards. https://naacp.org/articles/naacp-sues-xai-illegal-pollution-data-center-power-plant @JulianOliver@mastodon.social

NAACP Sues xAI for Illegal Pollution from Data Center Power Plant

NAACP sued xAI and its subsidiary, MZX Tech, for the tech companies’ unlawful operation of dozens of unpermitted methane gas turbines to power its Colossus 2 data center in South Memphis. The Southern Environmental Law Center and Earthjustice are representing the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP and the national NAACP.

Just noticed my EV has exceeded 100,000km driven. Huzzah!

At my typical driving efficiency that works out to a consumption of …

🔋 15.15MWh (mega-Watt hours)
⛽️ 0 litres petrol
🛞 8 tyres

At this year’s average of 50g CO₂ / kWh that works out to 7,575kg of CO₂

Unfortunately it also happens in clean technology. I went looking through press releases to find out what slows down builds of solar and batteries. Not the RMA. (Surprise!) I also found that while many announcements did result in actual results (Ruakaka, Huntly) some were quietly trimmed down. After the initial giant projections and press releases a year or two later they put out a new release announcing a subset and claiming success!!! @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @JulianOliver@mastodon.social

For some reason turned on the radio news at 5am this morning and it was pretty close to my Mastodon feed:

* US doing something goddamn stupid and hurting their trade partners
* AI hurting the environment
* National Coalition doing something mad (probably damaging the Treaty or punishing beneficiaries -- I had tuned out by that point)

Add a train and it'd be just about done!

How a Few Hundred Dollars Could Manipulate Election Prediction Markets

Touted as a truth serum for political forecasting, they’re vulnerable to distortion, sometimes at surprisingly low cost.

By Liam Vaughan

… The odds fell back as switched-on traders hoovered up “no” contracts in response, but the following day Polymarket still gave Mahan a 36% chance of replacing Gavin Newsom. Traditional polls had him around 4%.

I was looking at a semiconductor company that listed on NASDAQ, crowing about their multi billion dollar market for their product in 2026!!! Huh, today is 2026. Found a more up to date presentation. Now they’re so excited at the market potential to grow from 90 to 100 million (10%!!!). What happened to the billions? (I’d have to dig up the presentation again but I think they expect AI to be multi billions by 2032! Their projections are right this time!) @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @JulianOliver@mastodon.social

All good. Check out Henry Hub on Wikipedia and also the linked articles there. Perhaps it is this one in Memphis, which means they’ve been subjected to the disturbance for years. @JulianOliver@mastodon.social

Read a very interesting presentation from Contact Energy regarding their aspirations, trying to drum up interest from investors.

Starts off with a lovely photo of their new battery electric storage system at Glenbrook.

This slide poked me in the eye. Left hand column. One of these projected numbers is not like the others. It’s double its peers, and it’s a new company with nothing built. That makes me think it’s bullshit.

Met Police's Palantir deployment has its own officers watching their backs

> “we were never informed that the upgrade would include the deployment of Palantir's artificial intelligence. This continuous 24/7 geo-location tracking is highly intrusive and risks monitoring officers when they are off duty, on rest days, or at home. This presumption of wrongdoing and attack on officer's personal lives is unacceptable."

Well said! It is highly intrusive! I agree! Ban it!

You say "barn" but you don't say how far it is from the existing power supply. Is this going to be off grid? Two things I've heard are ... how much wind do you get (in regards to fixing them down) and in my experience you always want more than you end up installing. @brianb@fosstodon.org

A while back I made some edits to a map on OpenStreetMap, mainly correcting some hut details and direction that streams were flowing (downhill, typically).

How can I find *my* changesets? Is there a filter for that? There are recent changesets in this area but I can't find a way to just get mine.
