i don’t know what the author of the ‘worse on purpose’ blog that popped up out of nowhere’s game is, but a cursory glance at his website shows that he: works on ai for palantir; co-founded one of those ai ‘dev team’ services we were all ragging on; and has blogged extensively about how private ai schools are, like, the future of education or some shit. so maybe we boost that shit a little less, eh
hearing rumors that it’s musician’s day. rather than trying to sell you one of my albums, this seems like a great excuse to do something i’ve wanted to do for a while now - talk about my album art. ‘cause while i’ve commissioned a couple of them, i’ve done quite a few myself and i guess my hope is that talking through the process maybe convinces one person to get a little messy and not be afraid to just try something instead of typing ‘hey rip off an album cover that i like’ into a little box.

and finally, my latest, ‘to find warmth in snow’ is based on an old photo of mine. i added the text and used a plugin that treats images as filters to scan through it, filtering white noise with it. i then ran that audio through various spectrum analyzers until i got an end image i was happy with. i composited this over the high-contrast original (sans text), leaving in the grid lines so traces of the process remained.

‘eidolon pareidolia’ was probably the most fun of these to do. the instax photo is of an oscilloscope running in my daw, probably blue cat but idk for sure. long exposure of a somewhat stable part of the piece. i printed a few copies of the text in negative and lit them from underneath to get a practical sort of glow effect, this gave me some good textures from the paper/toner as well.

@batterpunts this is not a judgment call on you, but it’s frustrating because i see a lot of mis/disinformation constantly spreading on the fediverse and i think it largely boils down to webs of trust being broken by people who feel that very exact thing.

‘sines’ uses waveforms and an fft spectral analysis from my agilent 54642a oscilloscope. it’s from the album audio, albeit different points; the scope lets you composite traces before ‘printing’ it to disc. i cropped it to the important part, and scaled it to the right proportions using nearest-neighbor to preserve the pixels. i knew i wanted the font to be in contrast to the sharp, pixely backdrop & here’s an early version of that. the font i ultimately chose really bogs down a computer 😅
