I want to post more here, but honestly, I don't feel like I have or have done anything that's post-worthy lately. Mostly just hanging in there, getting work done, and trying to come up with ideas on things to do or build that might be post-worthy...

I know I can just post random crap, or just stop by and ask how folks are, but this feels pointless, In a sense? Maybe if I ask anyway, I can normalize it for my brain...

So on that note; hi! How are my fedi friends doing?

Okay, I have this food theory, and maybe the creatures of fedi can help me out.

Theory: gluten-free bread makes better grilled cheese.

Reasoning: the lack of gluten means the bread retains less moisture, and therefore it becomes crispier on the outside when grilled, but stays soft on the inside.

With celiac, I can’t make a real comparison, but maybe someone else out there can (or can share some anecdotal evidence one way or another!)

Apparently "iranian hackers" are "breaching" gas station storage tank monitoring systems and changing reported fuel levels. The quotes are because these systems were apparently just sitting there online without a password. This is not "hacking". This is propping your front door wide open and wondering how animals got in when you come to check 6 months later. How does this shit still happen in 2026?! https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/15/politics/iran-hackers-tank-readers-gas-stations

This is obviously not about Rowling, but a property with a fandom as rabid and entrenched as the wizard books once were. I die a little inside when I see the endless amounts of fan art and OCs and stories and other works… But I wrestle with how much of a monster I’d be if I spoke up about it. And even if people were happier knowing, I’d always be the one they associated with the end of their blissful ignorance. Some people wouldn’t let it go.

I was hesitant to volunteer for such a big project, but I’m glad I did, because it’s been a very positive experience in no small part due to Distant’s wonderful and accepting community. The main reason it’s so special is that it rekindled my love of doing these kinds of projects just for fun. I got to try out ideas, learn new things, and simply “play” in a medium I still want to enjoy. While it might not look like much, it’s something I’m very proud of having made myself, by hand. 2/2

@littlefox@gotosocial-dev.svc.0x0a.network unless you’ve got unusual secret hobbies you’ve never posted about, I’m pretty sure you don’t need to be. You don’t seem the kind of personality anyway. Plus I can’t bring myself to name and shame publicly yet… I know I should, but it breaks my heart to imagine ripping away something that makes people so happy. I’m kind of damned either way, and for now I’m choosing cowardly hesitation.

@GustavinoBevilacqua huh. Funny that Wikipedia says “less common in Canada”. Here in BC, practically all grocery store chains I know of use a coin-lock and possibly electronic wheel locks on their carts (although some of those I don’t think are real, and just scare tactics…) I’ve been 3D printing plastic tokens to keep in the car to use the coin locks.

Ugh. Is this AI-generated content?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH3mYQaSA7I

It all seems well produced, and too consistent to be AI, but I'm getting some red flags from earlier works and comments...

Can anyone find anything about these songs or this artist? Best I've been able to tell, the animations probably aren't AI, but the music might be? There's a real songwriter credited, "Trevor Van Meter" who's an animator, but no info on the music/vocals themselves...

@tretron@bark.lgbt uh… I’ve always known 12:00pm to be noon, and 12:00am to be midnight.

@CursedSilicon Usually they're for power filtering. You'd be amazed how many of those you can remove and still have a working computer.

@faoluin All or any of the above, depending on how I'm feeling at the time (and whether I forgot to put it in the fridge the night before... :think_googly:)

@CursedSilicon I'd wager it's for the little chip right next to them. Might be a bios eeprom, or a PWM for the fan header. Either way, the chip will still be powered despite not using the header.

@CursedSilicon If it exploded and the computer is still working, it was a power filtering cap. If you can get markings on the nearby chip, we could figure out what the chip is and what it's for...

@tretron@bark.lgbt Honestly… I assumed it was a “standard” by nature of being commonly accepted. Personally, I’ve never heard anyone use 12:00pm to refer to midnight, so I assumed it was a solved issue in this day and age. Then I read this, and you’re right; this shit’s fucked: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12-hour_clock#Confusion_at_noon_and_midnight Props to Canada for just giving up and saying “if you mean midnight write ‘midnight’ if you mean noon write ‘noon’, don’t even bother with am/pm”
