@hittitezombie@mastodon.me.uk @crispius@mstdn.fname.ca @wdormann@infosec.exchange @witchescauldron@kolektiva.social when I first started in this industry, decades ago now, I apologized for taking up so much of a senior engineer's time helping me solve a problem. His response has stuck with me ever since: "my most important deliverable to the company is more senior engineers". The short sighted murdering of that pipeline in many modern orgs is *shocking* to me

@floe @Remittancegirl This is the reason, for me at least, that I think there is kompromat. That once he was president the amount he would make laundring russian money would pale in consideration to what he could make via other streams, and so why would he keep working with Putin unless Putin had him by the balls some other way.

@helenclayton I would, instead, drill a couple of those small holes in the base, maybe one per each of the little bumps, then bury it until just the top is open, fill it and then put the cap on. The goal is to only allow a small amount of air in to replace the water, such that it wicks out the bottom. Look up ollas for the general idea.

@cocaine_owlbear@retro.pizza I too liked Lain back in the 90s when I watched it on KTEH. ;-) I actually rewatched it a few years ago, it holds up pretty well as a weird acid trip of a musing on what reality is based on our perceptions.

@stjepanlukac@mastodon.art 1) Blades in the Dark. It fits the kinds of stories I like to tell/play, of coworkers who don't have to like each other but are stuck in a high stress job, and what they're willing to give up to get that done. 2) Fate. It's a generic enough system that it's pretty easy to expand to tell a pretty wide range of setting or story, even if it does need weird dice. 3) D&D. I'm not *happy* about this choice, but it'll hit the widest number of players, so I'm likely to get to keep gaming.

@Texan_Reverend @rockario Would it be possible to have those posts from local storage still be available to pull from their originating instance? So, alice@masto.soc posts a picture, nobody sees it, it gets purged, two years later, bob@mato.soc is flipping through alice's posts, gets to the end of the local storage, kind.soc throws off a "hey, gimme the next hundred posts and I'll store them again", then they get purged? that way history can still get cached locally, but preserved?

@Texan_Reverend I don't know enough about how the masto/fedi backend works, and I'm not pitching for wholesale rewrites (If I was that interested, I'd go make my own PRs), but I was just wondering if something like that might alleviate some of the "but what about lost history" woes. It wouldn't require masto.soc to constantly be feeding network requests, but we don't have to fully duplicate all info for all time.

RE: @cstross@wandering.shop

One of the things I have learned over my 4 decades of thinking is that rules are made to be broken. However, if you don't know what rules you're breaking, what they're there for, and why you're breaking them, the unintended consequences are probably going to cause you more trouble than it's worth.
