Why is it that pro-LLM people always respond to bans (or potential bans) of LLM-generated code by suggesting that LLM users will simply continue to use LLMs but hide the fact that they’re doing so? You’re just announcing that you’re a fundamentally dishonest and untrustworthy person who thinks rules don’t apply to you (and/or that you think most of your fellow LLM-lovers are). Who is this meant to persuade?

@eco-g@stroud.social It’s a very weird situation where a political party can’t require that members actually agree with its own politics. Why would they be a member of a party that supports trans rights if they can’t agree with that? I wanted to make an analogy with a socialist party allowing members who oppose socialism and I suppose what you get then is New Labour. (Also worth noting that EHRC guidance is an interpretation of the law, not the law itself, and also that EHRC itself appears to be a transphobic organisation whose advice on this subject is suspect.)

@lproven@social.vivaldi.net @AAKL@infosec.exchange I'm dismissing the 'work' of slop users, yes. If it wasn't clear that I'm not calling Amix itself slop, then I apologise for that. I assumed it was obvious that I knew the thing written in the 80s was not LLM-generated but I suppose it was ambiguous what I was referring to. Likewise this isn't a criticism of your writing. As I said, a criticism of a thing you write about is not a criticism of your writing. More fundamentally: I completely disagree with you that this is a positive use of LLMs. I'm not saying I'm happy if some significant historical code is lost and unusable; but 'fixing' it with LLMs still makes the world a worse place. You don't have to agree with me on that but you're going to have to accept the fact that not everybody sees things your way.

@yosh @baldur I’m not incredibly sympathetic. For one thing they’ve been rewriting the frontend in ways that make it significantly more fragile (React); but also, they’re the same company that’s pushing all the LLM/‘agentic’ nonsense that’s causing most of that excess traffic. The leopard is eating its own face.

@afewbugs@social.coop @MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social A year or so back at a work social event hosted in a bar, I went to the bathroom, and it was very clearly a collection of individual gender-neutral toilets. Each with its own sink etc. It was only after I was done that I realised that the abstract symbol on the door was meant to indicate gender and I’d picked the wrong one. So both unnecessarily gendered _and_ nearly indecipherable.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange well, yeah, precisely. This doesn’t have to be about a universal ban; yet the reaction I’m talking about is even to local bans (like Codeberg, or the potential partial ban in Debian, or any time an individual project chooses to reject LLM contributions). That is, the pro-LLM crowd does not seem to respect anybody’s right to refuse LLM-generated code, and react by announcing that they will simply ignore the rules — which basically justifies an even stronger ban, I think (excluding the rulebreakers entirely, instead of simply rejecting certain sorts of contributions from them).

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange But I’m not arguing about whether or not users lie, or even why they might lie. What I’m perplexed by is people proudly announcing that if they were banned from doing something, they’d continue anyway but lie about it. It’s the fact that they seem to see this as a convincing argument against a ban. Like, yes, this is something that would need to be accounted for by a project banning LLM submissions (though it’s not insurmountable); but the fact that people would behave this way is not a convincing argument against a ban.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange Okay, but I think you’ve slightly missed my point. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but if it’s true, why would someone on the side of LLM-users be making that claim? Like, at this point it would obviously be silly of me to expect their ethical choices to align with my preferences when they’ve been completely misaligned so far. But why would someone announce that the group they belong to and support cannot be trusted to behave honestly?

@evan@cosocial.ca I answered ‘no, but…’ I don’t have a specific exception in mind. I would characterise it as ‘almost certainly not’, but I wouldn’t like to rule out the possibility that certain circumstances make it reasonable. The key question is whether the blocker would find it acceptable to be contacted, and the blocked person should consider that seriously and honestly before doing so — which is so often not the case (people want to believe that the block was unreasonable or that their circumstances are special and justify their behaviour etc, which is probably not true).

Like, ‘vibe-coding is great as long as you understand when it can and can’t be used’, when it’s been clear all along that many people either don’t understand or don’t care. ‘Agentic engineering’ just feels like ‘well *I’m* not one of those careless people so it’s fine’.

@rozeboosje@masto.ai not saying you’re necessarily wrong, but Labour’s strategy hasn’t even been to call Farage a gobshite, it’s been to copy all of his policies that they think they can get away with. The parties that have been more likely to call him a gobshite outright are also the ones proposing meaningful policies.

@me@social.taupehat.com Right, yeah, if it’s a specific ordering you need then presumably it’s better to just have one unit running a command that runs all the other things sequentially, as you say. (Or presumably you could also define them all as separate units and specify the real dependencies in each unit, but maybe not worth the effort.) Must admit I haven’t had this issue precisely because I only run systemd on a laptop; my servers run FreeBSD.

@Voline do you have a source for that last edit (that only Hansard or the Parliament video service can publish it)? I’d always understood that anybody can report on what’s said in Parliament, which is why it’s become the traditional way for an MP to put something in the public record that had been intended to be secret. And it doesn’t seem to make sense for them to claim it’s secret but also to publish text and video of it being discussed. (I thought I’d seen it mentioned in the Guardian since it was made public by Sultana, but I don’t have the link immediately to hand.)

@jonmsterling I find it particularly weird when it’s claimed that killing Google Reader killed RSS really? because, well, as you say, RSS is still fine, but anyway, was google reader ever so significant that it could have had such a disproportionate impact? (My guess: people who didn’t really use RSS only really know about Google Reader, and maybe conversely, people who used Google Reader weren’t very committed to RSS and so just gave up on RSS as a whole when GR went away.)
