Just a random dude who posts about politics, technology and TTRPGs. I also paint minis, which I share on my blog and pixelfed.

Lets break the silos and rewild the internet!

#auspol, #tabletopgames, #miniaturepainting and #numenera.

@petealexharris@mastodon.scot @Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt The trouble with prospectuses (prospecti?) is that you have to disclose a lot of things and if you aren't honest enough then you tend to get sued / dragged before the regulators. Turns out accountability is a somewhat effective antidote to bullshit.

@PeterLG@theblower.au @stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe You're probably not wrong. AI has a tendency to resemble formal English. Apparently Kenyans (whose education still tends to slant towards very formal English) tend to have that exact problem too. https://marcusolang.substack.com/p/im-kenyan-i-dont-write-like-chatgpt

@molly0xfff At least it's giving the agent a separate wallet and not just issuing it with access to the users wallet. So people have more of an ability to control exactly how much money they set on fire.

AWS and Microsoft are selling much more than cloud services - Bert Hubert's writings

Ten, twenty years ago customers over at large corporations would often ask me what hardware they’d need to run my software. As software developers, we’d tend to be rather blasé about such questions: “whatever you have lying around!”. If pressed, we’d say you’d need this much RAM and that much storage. We thought we were doing our users a tremendous favor by being so flexible. Yet, customers were very much not happy with our responses.

@Tamtam @mvsde I might be able to help at least with RSS: https://hobbies.deimos-legion.net/2025/01/21/rediscovering-rss/ There's a few directories there depending on what kind of blog you find interesting - that gives you somewhere to start at least. And many blogs will have their own lists of other blogs, so you can often discover other new things by exploring (and in the process, discover why it is that the Web was called the World Wide *Web*).

@Iwillyeah @dalias @fosstodon It does provide a shield against any new spammers who are creating an account to take advantage of it though, which could mitigate the issue enough to be able to give real users a bit more time to migrate.

@solonovamax@tech.lgbt @stuartl@mastodon.longlandclan.id.au I went and tried to find if there's ever been a prior CVE for notepad and came up empty. So decent odds that this is the first CVE Windows Notepad has ever had. That's an accomplishment, just not of the good kind.

@su_liam @ersatzmaus @FediThing @futurebird @dacig Depends on the problem. Real problems absolutely require a systemic solution, but "I feel uncomfortable because my neighbours are different from me" is absolutely solvable with self-work. Because the only problem there is in your own head.

@Research_FTW@sciences.social @jensorensen@mastodon.social This. Being more mindful in our tech choices is exactly what's called for. Convenience should not be the only consideration, not when technology has the power to shape ourselves and our society. And especially not when the companies understand that better than the general public, and are taking advantage to shape both to suit their own selfish ends to everyone else's detriment.

@jmax @Malfunct @rlcw Pretty much. The buyer just managed to sound intimidating enough when threatening to go to court that the seller wasn't sure. He spent a full hour chatting to the bot in what could only be a deliberate attempt to trick it into offering a "discount code" and then pasted it into the order comments demanding it be honoured. Not sure if he's cooked enough to believe he has a leg to stand on, or if he was hoping he could bravado his way through if he sounded authoritative enough.

@painting_squirrel @greene There's a statistician called Hans Rosling that has given a TED talk on how live expectancy and child mortality rates feed into family size - long story short, the more likely kids are to live the smaller families get. I always quite liked that fact because it meant that there was no conflict between helping people live longer, healther lives and addressing overpopulation. I certainly hope that MAGAts haven't looked at that same insight and drawn a much darker conclusion.

@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk @vkc@linuxmom.net There was another one where there was a way to send a message, tag people and then delete it - they'd get a notification with the content but it'd be unreportable because it didn't exist anymore. I can't remember exactly how it worked, but trolls were abusing it heavily. Hopefully they've fixed it.

@infosecdj@infosec.exchange @osma@mas.to It can be a business, sure. But that's not the only, or even the best model for social media. For example many Mastodon instances are run more like co-ops. Online communities supported directly by the users they serve rather than by those users being indirectly monetized. And sure, those communities are still subject to local laws, but international players without jurisdiction aren't likely to have much influence.

@fiercemilder@mastodon.ie One saving grace here is that while it might slow new sign ups on existing services, I can't see the people who've already bothered to get themselves an account migrating into the Google version. Add that to the major virtue of federation being the ability to find a community where you best fit (the local timeline on the Gmail instance would be completely useless) and an attempt at Embrace, Extend, Extinguish could potentially backfire (Embrace, Exodus, Oopsie).

@shlee @PostersUnionAU It's a little large, but it could work. It probably needs either a transparent background (black or white monochrome transparent could be cool) or a defined border of some kind to help it fit into the page well.

@farbel @mattblaze You'd hope so, but costs aren't always awarded (and typically there's a high bar to clear to get them awarded). I'll have to leave it to someone with an appropriate legal background to advise what his chances are of being awarded costs in a federal criminal case. I wouldn't be very optimistic about it though.

@shlee @PostersUnionAU It might be worth simplifying it a bit - the text on the keyboard is illegible so should probably either be cleaned up or dropped from the smaller logo. The other text probably needs to be made clearer - which might require playing with some of the proportions.

@fiercemilder@mastodon.ie Just adding a thought on this that's been bouncing around in my head the past couple of days. Historically, a lot of people have been uncomfortable with the amount of data collected on them by Facebook / Google / Twitter but tolerated it because they don't know what to do about it. When protecting the privacy of your data just requires moving to another instance - same UI, same experience, just less spying - that actually becomes a much easier sell than abandoning your entire social graph.
