There is no "one right way" to trans.
Trans women are women, but we are not cis women.

Transsexual woman, crossed over last century. Will us a term other than TS when a better one becomes available.
Fond of baseball.
Becoming fonder of WNBA.

decades-old terminology
@gwynnion@mastodon.social @kirtai@tech.lgbt Some thoughts on why getting care was, in essence, a beauty contest. When news of sex change surgery was being sensationalized reported in the 1950s (Roberta Cowell, Christine Jorgensen) there was a far greater demand than supply. The providers, broadly speaking, were either private surgeons or university research hospitals. In both cases it (the beauty contest for transhets) was brutal capitalist marketing at work. The private surgeon saying "look what I did!" to future clients and the research facilities saying "look what we can do!" to the deciders of the funding of their research. Then through the 1980s and 1990s, as everyone learned more and more, the number of providers gradually increased and the RLT (real life test before being "allowed" surgery) was lowered from 2 years to 1. I was on the 2-year plan and I think that it got reduced shortly after I crossed over but I am not sure of the timing. I remember on the dial-up network that I was on, you didn't have to specify what RLT was. These days I rarely see "RLT", so I take it that it isn't an official thing any more. And at around that time they started loosening up on the beauty contest standards and on the transhet requirement for care and surgery. IMO YMMV

@reilyh@blahaj.zone Alt text. Open source. Feel free to make it better, I am not sure if I described the gender correctly. I would describe them as genderfluid or nonbinary but the label says "transgender". A black ink drawing of a broad-shouldered person with muscular arms and a decent sized set of breasts facing the viewer with some labels and arrows pointing towards various places on the person. Two sets of text appear, one above the person and one below the person. The person is wearing a black t-shirt with a slight scoop neck and an emblem on the front, pants whose colour is filled by sets of almost horizontal lines, suggesting, perhaps, blue jeans, and a white belt. The body is facing the viewer but the person has bent their outstretched right arm atth elbow att about a 90-degeee angle and looking at their right hand, which is clenched in a fist which is angled inward. The left hand holds a white shopping bag. The hair has not been coloured in, implying a light or blondish colour. The hair is shaved at the sides but has grown in some. The top is fashioned in a pixie cut. A label, "TRANSGENDER" and a dark, wide arrow point towards the person. Several smaller labels with smaller arrows point at various locations. Clockwise, starting at about the 7:00 position: "UNSHAVED ARMPITS" points to the right armpit from between the outstretched right arm and the torso. "FROM THE MEN'S SECTION" points at the right shoulder of the t-shirt. "30+ AND LOVING IT" points at the left side of the head. "SHORT HAIR" points at the right side of the head. A bubble caption has the person saying "Nice!" Three arrows point at the bubble. "VAIN", "LOUD AS FUCK", and , "DEEP VOICE TOO". "NO BRA" points to the chest. "TATOOS" points to the left arm, which has something like one of those barbed wire tattoos at the top of the forearm. The right arm has a similar tattoo. "HAIRY" points to the lower part of the left forearm. The text above says: BACK IN 2017 WHEN I STARTED TRANSITIONING, I CHASED PERFECT FEMININITY WITH FERVOR. I LOST SIGHT OF WHAT I HAD ALWAYS KNOWN: THAT WOMEN COULD DO ANYTHING. The text below says: 2026 TODAY I FLEXED A LITTLE JUST TO CHECK MYSELF OUT IN A STORE WINDOW, ALL THE THINGS A WOMAN AIN'T SUPPOSED TO BE... BUT A MUCH HAPPIER DYKE FOR IT. (ALSO HOTTER) The artist's signature appears at the bottom right. The signature is ascending, indicating the artist's ambition, optimism, creativity, and vitality.

To me the litmus test is whether you have a finite or an open-ended contract. As someone who has been an expat a guest worker on contract, I can comfortably say that this demographic rarely bothers to learn the local language. I would try, mainly because I wanted to be a "good guest". But that was rare, the guest workers who learned the language usually guys who had relationships where they were robbing the cradle with age-inappropriate local women.

mention of phobic people
@caroline@chaosfem.tw Take the W! Apropos of nothing... About 25 years ago I worked with a guy, we would go out for lunch at a nearby restaurant in the same industrial area. Coworker was a phobic East European guy (and had clocked me, I subsequently learned, but still did lunch with me). Restaurant owners were East European and also gave off a phobic vibe. One day, not during pride month (I forget if that even existed in 2002), the restaurant was decorated with pride-coloured ribbons/bunting. I said nothing, I think that they just thought that it was colourful. About a week later the pride decorations were gone. At the time I didn't have the confidence to display an interest (and risk the conversation where I would have to out myself) so I kept quiet. I wish that I could have that one over again. But life goes on.

Just wondering because I have read (30 years ago from IIRC Lysiane Gagnon in the Globe and Mail) that Franco-Canadians are more quick to "se tutoyer" (use the informal "tu" with each other) than the Franco-Europeans, who tend to "vouvoyer" (a term that I learned, oddly, on fetlife.com) longer with another person. Not sure what Franco-Africans or other francophone demographics do.

@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social Good writing, but does not quite fit me: my name and form changed before the millennium (bucket list item achieved). My version: Do not ask me for my name, this will be the only interaction that we ever have, unless I come back to this Starbucks again. I have transitioned last century and have been working on my weight ever since. Tolerated by some and ignored by many, I have seen the fall of the Maple Leafs every spring and am too young to remember their last win of the Stanley Cup, but it happened at an age when I remember my first feelings of what turned out to be trans. That my version, take it with a grain of salt: I boycott Starbucks over labour practices.

Mogilny said, "Ooohhh... bomb!". His teammates managed to talk the security people out of detaining him. The pallor of him and his teammates may have been a factor in their success. /s
