We actually went out the other day and interfaced with the world in that way, which we hadn't done in ages. We danced, which was exciting. I met new people, which was also wonderful. I then spent a large portion of yesterday recovering alone in my bedroom because the world is extremely stimulating and I'm very much not used to it yet! I'm working on a few larger scale tattoo projects, one has one session done and another to go, one is booked for LA in October, another is just beginning, and then I received another inquiry for a cute ornamental piece this morning so hopefully I'll be able to book a room at this all-woman tattoo shop in Redlands that I really want to work at and do that soon as well. I have one slot open for a $100 portfolio piece from my Sympathetic Spells book, and can book High Desert, Inland Empire, or Los Angeles for it. Let me know if you'd like to claim it! I'm leaning heavily into ancestral work this season, namely in working towards healing some of the wounds in my line, which is looking a lot like listening to my grandparents' from beyond the proverbial veil, speaking to my children, and having long talks with my own mother and reconnecting with my father and stepmother. Not all ancestral work is about asking for things, for we will be ancestors one day, too. With this I feel especially inspired to hold space for folks this Samhain season, and am creating a really beautiful Samhain flash sheet to be offered once in LA and once in the High Desert (though if there's enough interest I can probably book another day in either place) and offering these pieces at really reasonable prices. I can share that sheet on 10/1, which is exciting even if none of you are interested in booking, just because I feel so proud of what I've created for it. So that's the dump from the last couple of weeks! Happy Equinox to my friends here. How is the shift settling in your world?

A portion of the Santa Ana river trail runs very close to our new house, and I went on my first run in almost a year there yesterday, and found it also runs under this beautiful historic railroad bridge. Hoping next time I remember to bring something to take photos with, it's truly incredible. There's actually running water, which in California this time of year is... hard to find, and there are SO many kinds of plants, including some of the most incredibly enormous Datura blooms I've ever seen.

Does anyone have any good book recommendations specifically for European folklore or even folklore symbol reference material?

I have this idea to twist the typical Halloween flash into All Hallow's Eve/Samhain flash by creating images of the actual folkloric origins of the "typical" Halloween imagery. For instance, I think if I remember correctly the Jack-O-Lantern comes from some story about a turnip and a lump of coal and the wielder needing to walk about with it to find something, but I cannot for the life of me find a genuine, non-internet reliable source to verify this random half memory.

So quite honestly I try not to come here very much lately because I lack the bandwidth to set up the filters for the consistent stream of horrific political things flowing down my timeline regardless of that I *have* filters for things like US Politics (unless I just filter for "US" which would be potentially effective but too broad) and I also lack the bandwidth to genuinely engage with the folks I want to engage with because that means, usually, scrolling through a timeline full of horrific things, and it's not like I don't want folks talking about this, it's just that I don't have the capacity for *it* and everything in my life right now, which is fine.

But! Just know! I miss you all. You're all really great. And I hope to have something genuinely nice for you to read soon! I'll be working on getting back into the newsletter soon, and will probably be using that as a space to share updates relevant to the tattoo practice and other work (readings etc) as opposed to just this timeline.

Today I got a little bit of painting done in the Grimoire, and am hoping to be a little less blocked to work on a brief writing project this evening. I also enlisted the offspring in packing help today, which was relatively successful considering. Which, for the record, it's a LOT easier to move if you're not emptying your entire house. I don't envy future us getting the rest of our stuff out of here to actually make repairs but that's a future us problem and hopefully by then we have more psychological capacity for that can of worms.

I also sat in the garden and meditated and watched the bats a bit this evening. I love them. I'm unsure how common albino bats are, but we have at least two resident albinos and between them and our raven friend, Hokomopadah, I'm glad we'll have the chance to return here for the time being because I'm certainly not ready to say goodbye to them for good.

Some of the paintings in the grimoire are based off of some of the woodblock prints that are in Agrippa's "Three Books of Occult Philosophy" and to be honest I've had such a bone to pick with Agrippa about this entire book but some of these prints are just incredible. If someone books "the Sun" spell I'll be able to share the photo here, and I really hope that happens if not tomorrow then quite soon.

@harebones@pagan.plus Hm. Mine are a bit of a workspace as well. They change when they need to change, but they do also host focal points that are relevant to the kind of general life phase we're in. For instance, when we lived in the mountains we kept a lot of pinecones and bluejay feathers on it. At the Ranch we have shed snakeskins and crystals found about. Not enough to become clutter, but just something to ground the work in place and kind of offer back something found that felt meaningful when or where it was found. But I definitely don't decorate seasonally as in like "fir sprigs for Winter Solstice" or whatever, partially because that just doesn't fit the place and also just because that's not how I orient to an altar, personally

RE: https://climatejustice.social/@rancholibertad/116944347497011525 It's funny because this paradigm of being questioned for what our qualifications are at the Ranch, as though we aren't proving pretty significantly that our research and lived experience is foundationally enough and extremely valuable, is the opposite of what I'm met with in response to some of my writing here on esoteric topics. Where with ecological topics folks are like "you literally cannot think about this if you haven't been significantly trained by the actual 'experts' with PhDs in universities" With esoteric topics if I say "look, there are no experts, I'm not the expert, but you should think about this deeply" folks are like "you literally should never have the gall to say that I should *think* about anything that I want, because I want it and that's enough". I feel like we could unpack this pretty heavily but I don't have the bandwidth at this *exact* moment

Sometimes folks are like "what qualifications do you have for talking about [native plants, permaculture, closed-loop farming, rainfall patterns, survival strategy, etc]?" And I think that's so wild. There are folks out here with biology and environmental science degrees that no doubt comprehend a topic through a framework I don't, at least not on that level, and they're making policy and running the environmental nonprofits in this region. But there's something really fucked up about that: they're *not* the experts. They're the people pushing the "all invasive plants are bad, rip them all out" agenda, which mirrors pretty hideously the "all immigrants are bad, lock them all up" agenda -- and both share the SAME massive blind spot of refusing to evaluate the reality of relational structure and determine where entities fit and how they benefit system OR how to deal with them holistically and ethically *as* beings when evaluating the drawbacks of their existence in a given space that perhaps cannot support them *right now*. The point here is that it's really really really easy to think you're really decolonizing your stewardship efforts and social behavior and then fall into something like "science is good, science helps us, therefore anyone who isn't a scientist shouldn't be making any decisions" which is kind of like "well those non-white, non-land-owning, non-male people seem pretty dumb and I'm sure nothing they say or believe or know has any value". ESPECIALLY when it comes to talking to a duo of people where one of the people really pushing the ideas and policy and knowledge format is literally an Indigenous person who has lineage ties to this land. The other consideration here is that there's enormous potential for hyper-local knowledge and sharing the framework for obtaining hyper-local knowledge to be more beneficial than the kind of generalities that are taught by necessity in universities (the patterns of which are rife with settler assumptions, also). What works here in our Valley is not what works in Morongo Valley, but the framework for accessing what works is the same, and so we share *that* for folks not to claim we somehow know everything about all ecosystems, like the folks with degrees do, but to literally empower all of you to make the most important decisions within your ecosystem and community that no one else can come in and make for you without probably making some critically dangerous assumptions. The idea of people with more knowledge on a topic is not a new one, but the concept that tenured, degreed up experts are the ONLY people who should ever speak on a topic is relatively new to post-industrial societies and quite frankly it's dangerous and an extraordinarily sharp blade to wield against folks who are actively attempting to heal land that isn't well understood and whose history is actively suppressed.

For pragmatic reasons I decided to initially pitch an arc of classes that's more focused on the systemic concepts of closed-loop homesteading in a resource-stressed environment, because the venue I ended up choosing to host with is unlikely to accept the other topic. And then when considering hosting the originally proposed topic online to folks here who may be interested, I realized, maybe this is too close to something @fey@pagan.plus is already hosting? So I may save this concept for a future class once I feel out the local audience a bit and maybe talk to some of the other local venues that might be more conducive to such a class. That said, would anyone here be interested in the hard skills courses being offered online?

@VVitchy@pagan.plus I try to stay in the kind of... I don't know. Not optimistic side of things, I guess, because I'm most definitely a cynic and I think you all know that, but I like to feel at least like "here's what we can do to make things less awful. If only we stick to our guns..." But lately, more and more I'm eating those words. Doing the right thing feels less and less possible, especially if we're to open this space to others. Structure makes it hard, and I know that isn't an excuse, I don't want it to be, but wow, yeah. Everything you said: sometimes it just feels like we're careening towards annihilation and all we have are bicycle breaks on a freight train. That doesn't necessarily deter me from trying, but just to say that it certainly is feeling less and less like we're ever going to "turn the tide" and "fix" the simultaneous and enormous problems we're facing all at once.

@fey@pagan.plus I don't blame you, to be honest. History be damned, potatoes are quite satisfying. I know not every diet would agree, and that's totally fair, but they are calorie dense and extraordinarily valuable to be able to grow yourself. Have you heard of groundnuts? I think Apis americana is the scientific name -- they're a native North American tuber with extremely nutritious seed pods and a tuber that's a lot like (so I've read) a somewhat drier potato. They like a lot of water, and I *think* would be native to a huge region of the Northeast that probably includes yours. If you have a wet spot on your property, it could be a good no-effort thing to cultivate. I think they're also something like 28% protein by dry weight (that might be the seeds, the tubers are pretty high in protein too though iirc) so they're extremely nutritionally valuable.

Completely uncertain how rational or irrational the concern is, to be honest, but if you ever do decide it's safe to try them I'd love to know what the experience is -- I don't think they'd really do well here but have a minor obsession with them as a really important staple food crop in pre-settler North America.

Today I worked on painting the rabbitry building with the UV-excluding paint that helps it stay cooler until we can establish some trees around it, made candles for shop orders & spent some much needed 1:1 time with my eldest at the library. The days still go by so quickly and there's still a long list of things I didn't get to, yet, so I still need to work more tonight, but still. More got done than normally can, and that was really really nice.

🖤 It's happening! Finally the details are confirmed and I can share this thing I've been working on for a while -- I'll be hosting an Ancestral Sigil Making workshop on Sunday, October 18th at Brewja Elixir in Joshua Tree. We'll be working within a communal setting using a somatic method to pull two sigils: one made by us, that we will burn at the end to leave behind. One made by another attendee as we make theirs to carry ancestral wisdom forward into the season, marked with jagua on our skin. Be prepared to come for the afternoon, settle in, and truly integrate into the experience. If you were looking for a good time to take a trip out to this region I hope this is it! If price is what's keeping you from going, I'm starting a waitlist for a certain amount of pay-what-you-can seats, so just DM me to get on that, and those seats will be released about three weeks before the date of the event. You're all getting this about a week before I'll be ready to post it on Instagram, and before the owner of Brewja puts it out on her network, so if you are interested you'll be set to get seats before anyone else. I know most of you aren't local, but I wanted to share here anyways, I'm very very excited to have the space to host this event. #JoshuaTree #California #Spiritual #Occult #Sigil #Magic #Witchcraft #Samhain #Witch #Pagan #Heathen

There is truly no real dichotomy between the "material" and the "spiritual". Everything Is, at different wavelengths, so to speak. Some things are more quickly accessible with our kind of named bodily sense perception: the table in front of us, the person sitting next to us, the concept of the people on this website that we know are speaking to us. However, that doesn't make you or the table or the person sitting next to us any more "real" or "existent" than that whisper we hear when we really stop to listen.

They want to be told what to do by an *authority* but because that makes them feel a lack of agency they try to preserve that agency by upholding this idea that there is some singular sanctified authority at all. And none of this is a disagreement, I genuinely agree vehemently with literally everything you've said I just think it's a wild conceptual place to be

Discussing the sun, but using a BDSM metaphor
I have a very complicated relationship with my solar aspect right now. That's a lot to unpack, so I won't, but in the kind of more worldly consideration of this: I feel like prior summers have not felt so hard. It's possible that the fact that it got *so* hot so early this year has just extended the discomfort beyond the duration I can normally happily tolerate it, or that in prior years we've been wrapped up in the relationships with folks staying here and so our own physiological discomfort has been sidelined by navigating interpersonal strife when we're all cooped up inside. But it's like, it feels like when you're doing a scene and there's that *need* to surrender, but you're at that point of resistance where you cannot get your bodymind to let go. Except with this it's like, I physically *cannot* extend more surrender to the sun because it is sooo immediately physiologically dangerous to do so, so instead I'm living in that space of pain with physical and psychological resistance and it's SO frustrating.

@Crazypedia@pagan.plus iirc the biggest blocker for "small" scale composting is that you need enough mass for the heap to heat up inside and support the kind of thermophiles needed to break down the stuff safely. Definitely you could get lots of anaerobic fungal breakdown stuff in a closed container (Bokashi uses a specific fermentation process so it's a bit different) but it might not be safe to grow veg in

I briefly mentioned this before but this is the new page of offerings -- you can also view them on my website. Let me make you something powerful for your altar, craft you a sigil to work into your practice! I'm also offering readings: Dreams are incredible tools for magical work. We literally experience our astral body in dreams, and when we learn to ask for specific answers they often reveal themselves to us. Even when we don't ask, sometimes something particularly important nags at us through recurring dreams or recurring motifs in dreams: a figure that keeps showing up, a sensation, people from our past. If you'd like to get into something that's been coming up for you, feel free to book a reading and I'd love to dive deeper into how to disentangle these threads. Likewise, sometimes certain symbols come up again and again, and you might waver between how to engage with it. I'd love to hold space for that kind of weaving as well. If any of this resonates or feels needed in your life, please feel free to reach out. I'd be happy to offer any of this on a "pay what you can" basis. Ultimately, these offerings are as a result of needing income to keep ourselves going and normally I'd like to offer them for free, period, and have for some of you who continue exchange with me frequently. However, for those of you who can afford to, I would love to offer them in commerce for the time being with hopes that eventually I can return to a purely organic mode of Practice and knowledge sharing. #Dreams #Pagan #Witchcraft #Readings #Psychism #Occult

As a side rant: I'm floored that SO MANY folks with art degrees want to be tattooists. Why? Why? It's like getting a business degree to be a stipper -- you'll be a great salesperson, sure, but it's a shitty job with no benefits, it tanks when the economy tanks, and it destroys your body long-term. I tattoo and make things for people because I have no education. Because I learned to draw from ex-cons, and grew up idolizing the resident tattooist for the gang all of my neighbors and friends were a part of. But now apprenticeships are even further from reach than they've ever been because this industry has been jacked up by middle and upper middle class kids who -- like the middle class kids who took over the good strip club jobs because their parents enrolled them in expensive pole classes -- have made it so that apprenticing an artist is an industry, and not something you do because you're bringing in a better artist or filling a shop spot with someone who is really, genuinely going to last and be a good fit and do good for their clients. And it's not just apprenticeships. The kids with parent networks and the networks they build through art school have every single advantage: from marketing mentorship to large followings coming out of art school from having the privilege of being a part of a large in-person cohort of fellow artists and mentors AND industry connections. They literally have the funds to pay to build a portfolio over several years and have mentorship all the while. And this goes beyond envy -- because while there's obviously still some envy here that I've not transcended, this is a class critique. Y'all think you deserve everything. You weren't willing to just be a tattoo enthusiast. Reality TV and Instagram made it cool, and you wanted that. But like, this industry was literally never for you until you took the entire thing and turned it into a hobby art collection for the middle and upper middle class -- who now can get good white collar tech jobs fully tatted while those of us rocking low-brow shit still can't get a good job bartending. So anyway, that's today's rant on class consciousness. I know it's not as lovely as most of what I share, so I'll return to that later on :)

It does a better job than I've been able to do previously of summarizing how all of these potentially separate-seeming things I do are actually intrinsically related to one another.

Putting myself out there more than maybe ever in my life and receiving mostly radio silence in return like "I only need one yes! Just one!" But at the end of the day, I'm a bit overflowing with gratitude right now. It's been *really* nice to have this time without Star working, it's been *really* nice to have more time to do my own work again, and yes we're very stretched on funds still and will be for the forseeable future (until I get that one yes!) but money is not The Thing. With any luck, we'll survive, the yeses will start coming, and the future we've been working towards will be closer than we imagined.

Star is building me a legit website but uh, there's some downtime right now if anyone has tried to access anything. Should be resolved soon!
