Adam Steer
mastodon 4.7.3Earth systems and geospatial field scientist by trade, bicycle mechanic to pay rent. 8 polar expeditions, a PhD, experience guiding groups in the wilderness and leading teams in the office.
Starting year 5 of a job hunt. #hireme!
See you on the trails / in the mountains!
OK OSGeo is going to send a survey out about LLM things. Great!
...it hasn't been discussed in public, a big change since I started in open source geospatial things.
...and the language indicates a premeditated result:
"to address eventual concerns and fully harness the power of these novel tools."
...reads as "we will do a survey so we can say we got input and then do whatever the thrusters say".
The concerns are apriori, readable years ago! Power of novel tools? *sigh* .
In April 2023, this spot was home for a couple of weeks between house-sits. We've had actual roof and walls without moving since November that year, although we're still on a knife's edge.
I was reminded of a geohipster catch up from a similar time - a lot is still true: https://www.geohipster.com/2024/03/21/where-are-they-now-adam-steer/
Fixed a dirt jump bike today. Best test ride ever, went out and did jumps in the streets of Bendigo.
wAt! At your age?
oh shityeah - you don't?
Years ago I made this talk - it was fun :) And I went to Davos to deliver it, which led to a 4 day solo hike around Graubunden 🏔️ ❤️ (as well as learning some of my colleagues and co-authors had decide to fuck my career in the meantime 🙄 )
The room was full! And feedback was great, so here's some stuff about doing things with aerial imagery and sea ice..
Escaping for a while this morning...
y'know, whacking the donate button on people's web sites would avoid folx feeling like they need to write things at corporate nazi bars.
...and honestly, if you're reading at the nazi bar, you're still supporting the nazi bar.
Oh wow the Victorian [Australia] government is fully bought in to the digital astrologists. Anyone who wants a case of brainrot can go read tender FY26-048.
"PROVISION OF TRAINING FOR THE DIGITAL JOBS - AI career Conversion pROGRAM"
[text directly copypasted, Presents as all caps in the tender doc. Maybe a good example of... the rest 🤣 😭 ]
It's like climate, housing, all the things... you can literally *show* these people, yet...
It's a disease, I swear.
Been reading about decision making and mountains today. Here's a film I remembered that had an impact - on the same topic. Good reminder that the mountains don't know about all the terrain analysis, metrics, heuristics, experience...
🏔️ ❤️
this stuff is *never* about protecting children.
TIL about a new [to me] society of geospatialists in Australia: ASIERA - the Australasian Spatial Information Education and Research Association
...of course there's no web site. Just whispers in the anzlic parchments, around water coolers...
...yet here they are, poppin' up to label a conference stream and apparently representing a significant part of the spatial information industry!
It is probably the same 5 old prunes and their anointed proto-prunes. Mark safe to ignore...
given the rarity and gravity of a prime ministers address I was expecting:
1. right folks we are ripping up AUKUS
2. removing all Australian assets and personnel from the Big Dumb War and future BDWs.
3. also no more US bases in Australia
4. about fuel. Yeah we know 30 years too late but we are not subisidising fossil fuels anymore and also making diesel/petrol from garbage until we don't have to.
5. everyone work from home
6. free public transport for all time
oh well 🤷🏻♂️
Huh, its #WIPWednesday. Aside from myself, here's something about debris flow accumulation in some mountains around Victoria (Australia). More black = = more things flow there. For a given scenario.
let me guess... tonights big announcement will be more or less
"If you've got money we will give you more!
Really struggling? Hmm nope nothing for you. If you want a handout just get money..."
dropped elder teen off at carpentry gig this morning then had a beautiful kayak session in the fog..
...quite the balance challenge without a horizon! Although no swims 🙌🏻 and some good tech work.
Now back to the job hunting bullshits 😭
2012 was the last time I went south to the ice.
One expedition weirdness: times when a person with [skills I have] was needed and people were running all over the ship searching for *anyone*. But no not you we will find someone!
Much later I read a report where experience /skills/certs were listed. In my row? nothing. At the time I had HUET, current wilderness 1st aid, qctive rock climber/rope skills, also 3 previous field expeditions...
...all erased in the record.
Someone invited me as an early user of their "GeoAI" platform based on my experience / expertise.
Which was nice. So I sent them to read the Spatialised policy on AI.
RE: @adamsteer@mapstodon.space
monthly boost number 15? (ish?)
we left desperate a long time ago, somewhere ...else... now, heading I'm not sure where.
Now that I'm a shill for Big Bike™️:
Friends don't let friends (or anyone, even enemies) buy hub-motor electric bikes.
...actually, it's not really the consumer's fault.
If you're a decision maker at a bicycle manufacturer and don't kill every hub motor proposal with fire, it is *your* fault.
"Consumer demand" be damned. Consumers aren't constantly thinking about weight balance, serviceability, safety...
