Happy to have found this place and the wide variety of interests to enjoy. Proud to be genuine lefty and support Greens, caring about our planet's future. Still struggling to advocate for good govt & strong progressive community policy.
Profile picture shows a pale yellow hellebore flower among dark green leaves.

Good morning 😊This rude person squawked at me non-stop for eight minutes while I was sitting up in bed w first coffee.
He/she stalked up and down the balcony rail, eyed off my plants, gave me side-eye and finally gave up as it is cold and wet and I am staying put for a while.🤭

@Devorppa@aus.social I think most lavenders are nearly indestructible, sprcially once as big as yours. Mine were self seeded from last year and only tiny. 😔 Luckily I have more if I can keep Trumputin off them.

Relating the size to the Canberra example shows me even more clearly the viciousness and cruel horror enacted by #Israel.
That relatively tiny part of the country as a whole to be denied to poor people trying to live.
Barbaric greed.

Cannot give comment on moving your rose bush because it is large.
But suggest you take a few cuttings and pot them up, just in case.
Depending on your time zone autumn or late spring would be good.

I am not religious. But I do know Jesus Christ was a good person who preached and cared about the poor and down trodden.
These so called Christian Brothers are as far removed from Jesus as their Satan.

Also highly recommendthe book Circe by Madeline Miller to get a whole new perspective on these various 'gods and heroes'.
Well written and entertaining.
*Edit Thank you for recommendation. Just downloaded 18 hours of audible version of A Thousand Ships. Looking forward to beginning this variation on The Odyssey.😊

@mariekung@growers.social Thank you, you have solved a long standing puzzle. I had many of these precious plants in my garden beds of my old home. I loved the glorious colour they brought and they were hardy and spread well. When I had to sell my home the new owner dug up the whole garden and put to grass. 😢😢
I had no chance to bring those plants in pot and could not remember name. The only photo I had was the blurry one below. Searched Australian plant books, still no luck. Have had all my friends on lookout- finally we know what we are looking for. 🙏🙏😊

@mxchara@seattle.pink @benroyce@mastodon.social @GoSeiGer@mastodon.nl @randahl@mastodon.social#Australia has #compulsoryvoting.
There is postal voting open weeks ahead. There is a week of pre-poll voting where voting booths are open before voting day so you can go from work, or for older or disabled people to avoid queues.
Our voting days are always on a Saturday, to help those who work on weekdays.
There are multiple polling booths in big cities, and several in smaller towns so usually easy or close to work or home. Often we vote in a local school or community hall.
It is compulsory to be on a local Electoral Roll and we are checked off against that. We therefore do not need identification.
To sum up - because it is compulsory it is made as easy and accessible as possible for everyone to vote.
In fact it is usually a perfectly easy, fairly quick procedure. It is good humoured and friendly, you see your friends and neighbours often on voluntary cake stalls or #DemocracySausage sizzles using the crowds to raise money for charities.
If #USA had compulsory voting and a straightforward system where the majority vote wins, I do not believe they would have had the horrendous results they are living with now.
I am eternally thankful for the fairness of the Australian voting system.

Every single assassination report I read and my mind thought #Epstein.
But I gloated about the journos learning for even a few minutes how little kids in US schools feel when a shooter drill/ alarm starts and they have to hide never knowing if it's real or not.

I don't believe there is ever a maximum capacity to discovering books.
I was so lucky to have a father who encouraged me to read beyond my years. Have read classics plus many modern novels and SFF, and books have been my friends, comfort and pleasure through my life.
So, infinite capacity, when you are young and when you have time to read.
But when you get very old, now only the favourites still come to mind and re-reading them seems to be better enjoyment than reading new ones.
Is it because I can guess all the plots or outcomes? Is it because old vocabulary is more expressive while new vocabulary seems limited and repetitive?
Or is it the comfort of familiarity and the memories of my first time readings? Or attachment to the characters and their worlds?
Well now, thank you, you set me pondering today, who will I return to next?
😊😊

I read from my grandmother's Pilgrim's Progress, but it was very old and heavy. It had terrifying illustrations, one of which was of the Giant Despair surrounded by skulls and bones.🙄 I warned my younger sisters not to look in this book and, now 70 years on we were all laughing about it recently.

@treleanor@aus.social Yes, most doc/med appointments I can manage just w cab, and the Cabcharge is part of package, so that is good as long as you can get yourself there. Cabs take foldable walker.
But as soon as you reach point you need actual wheelchair you need people to help.
I am not safe on roads w these wonderful scooters unfortunately.

@treleanor@aus.social Was in CHSP not a package so not grandfathered. Definitely worse off as transport help by Belconnen Community Service was wonderful. 14 days notice and drivers took you right into hospital, dentist etc building and met you inside after. Now have an annual Cabcharge, which is useful but harder for me to manage. I sometimes need support to get around, so have to pay the staff hours to collect, accompany and return. And book 28 days in advance. Definitely worse off.
If my modest savings increase my contribution increase and have cut back on help I had before.
