@tante@tldr.nettime.org's article (below) argues that #LLM tech is #fascist. I've long opposed LLM tech based on what it does (widespread harm) and come to see use as fascist based on those effects and the tendencies of those creating and benefiting from it, among several other factors. There are so many reasons to oppose it and to realise its direction. From there I identify LLM use with silent genocide, and oppose it for that too obvs. You? But it's worse than that as @tante@tldr.nettime.org shows: https://tante.cc/2026/04/21/ai-as-a-fascist-artifact/

With studies upon studies showing that actual measurable productivity gains through “AI” (which these days basically means chatbots) are really hard to come by and that “workslop” (meaning the extra work created for the rest of the organization by one person using “AI” lowering their work quality) eats up a lot of what might have been productivity gains many critics feel somewhat relieved: When the main narrative of “AI” (massively increased productivity) fails, this surely marks the end of this bubble and we might be able to get back to talking about actual problems.

I am not so sure.

Not because I think that some tweak to some LLM will make them suddenly that much more reliable or useful but because it was never about productivity really.

It’s something I alluded to in my “AI” talk at 2023’s Re:Publica: It doesn’t matter how good these systems are in reality, because that’s not what your boss cares about.

“AI” is a tool to disenfranchise labor.

That’s the job. If “AI” is actually more expensive than paying actual people actual wages that’s still a good investment for capital because it is about breaking up the structures, networks and organizations that help workers organize and fight for labor standards and fairer wages.

When CoCa Cola creates another bad ad using “AI” the fact that it’s garbage and expensive isn’t the point. It’s all just an investment into no longer needing to pay people for their expertise, work and time.

In December 2024 Ali Alkhatib wrote:

“I think we should shed the idea that AI is a technological artifact with political features and recognize it as a political artifact through and through. AI is an ideological project to shift authority and autonomy away from individuals, towards centralized structures of power.”

This is the macro-level view. It’s about Google, Microsoft and Amazon digging themselves even deeper into not only your personal life but also every economic workflow and process in order to charge rent using the established dependency.

But on a smaller (a bit short-sighted) level CEOs are looking towards “AI” not so much as actual replacement for labor but as the leverage to push down cost in the long term by crushing labor power.

So showing that productivity doesn’t measurably increase is winning the wrong game. It’s not an attack on our capabilities, skills or experience, it’s an attack on our collective and individual power.

AI as a Fascist Artifact

(Christian Tieber hat eine deutsche Übersetzung des Textes angefertigt: “KI” als faschistisches Artefakt. Vielen Dank Christian!) @jonny@neuromatch.social I've been on the other side of this, no baby, no chair, just a (then) forty year old man backpacking in Europe. Once in Greece and once in Turkey I was helped by a random person (Greece) or the driver and passengers on a late night bus in a large Turkish city to find my way to a hotel. Just out of kindness. The chap in Greece bought me coffees, guided me through transfers and was on the last bus to the destination but didn't even wait for thanks. I can probably think of other times too.

@falken@falkensweb.ecom it fascinates me how easily people can 'talk' without a common language. In Turkey we had no common words as these were all locals who had no regular contact with tourists. I once travelled for hours on a bus in India w families and no other tourists. They had no English, I had none of their dialect, yet there was so much chat between us. It was weird and wonderful. Waving, pointing, facial expressions and gestures. Who knows if we each understood the other, but it was lovely. @jonny@neuromatch.social

Who thinks a stochastic database would be a good idea? You know, where you query something and some of the time it picks some incorrect but plausible sounding result instead of fetching the correct record. And imagine if people started thinking that meant it was sentient, or might even be a way of creating an AGI. I know, I know.

@jonny@neuromatch.social this such delusional bollocks. This drug either attracts addled brains or addles them pronto. That aside, follow up question is, but why does the reason that they fail matter? These tools are still not trustable, and useful for a few niche tasks, and only if you are the right kind of smart. EDIT: plus no ethics, morals or concern about a survivable ecosystem. And even then those smart people risk addledom.

Didn't see this coming... I'm going to ask about #gardening, specifically how to move a mature rosebush (without killing it obvs). I guess it's about 5ft tall by 2ft to 3ft with lots of beautiful scented roses. I want to make sure it survives some building work next year which will be reaching up to about 2ft - 3ft away. We could just prune it and hope but want to consider moving. Is this feasible and if so any tips, do's or don'ts? #roses #gardeningMastodon @gardening@fedigroups.social

I'm surprised I've not heard of #iodeOS but see they don't have Mastodon on their list of socials which is odd given what they wrote about FOSS and privacy etc. Their shop is a bit of a disappointment. Maybe my connection is slow today but I almost gave up, and the price of a refurbished Pixel 9a is 20% more than I pay for new! Ouch.

I'm looking into complete #heating system inc #SolarPV + diverter or PVT while renovating an old property which currently lacks heating. All walls will have improved isolation but I'm not sure whether a #HeatPump is a good idea as we like it warm ~23C, so oil is the alternative. The house is mostly North facing (in SW UK), has a very old core (40cm stone walls) a less old section and two 1970's era extensions. A mixed bag! Thoughts and hashtags to follow welcome. #Renovation #Solar

#HomeLab help! I have #Proxmox VE and used a helper to make a Docker VM. Now I want to give that VM a fixed IP and I see that the way to do this is to log into the VM and set the fixed IP for the OS in the VM, but... The VM is running Debian 13 Trixie, which I believe uses #Netplan. So I modify the config, and do 'netplan try', and it reports that it can't allocate the IP which I think is because it's a VM. So I don't accept the new config. I tried some unused IPs. Any thoughts on this?

@diemkay@hachyderm.io Yep. The problem is that humans trust by default based on very little, and once that's established it's hard for people to reassess if it means doing anything at all. As you put it, "move on" rather than almost anything else. Sociopaths and businesses (which are sociopathic entities) have exploited this forever and we still trust to easily and don't adjust quickly enough. Moving to another provider doesn't change this unf. @JulianOliver@mastodon.social

The only reason I may log in again would be to connect with someone I know from my past and can't reach otherwise, which is also very unlikely now. So I wonder, who does still visit/frequent it, and do they really benefit? Do they understand the downsides and alternatives? Maybe that's something to share there?

@radicle@toot.radicle.dev Self hosting, coop hosting, p2p apps with a front end are all good. Another is to provide a local web API to a p2p network. Then people can build all sorts of web apps using standard web tooling and users download one app to access them all in their browser - including a GH like front end to git repos in p2p storage. The magic sauce for that is persistent data, which is why I built that for Autonomi: https://toast.happybeing.com @jonny@neuromatch.social @RuchiraSDatta@mathstodon.xyz @alienghic@timeloop.cafe @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de @forgejo@floss.social

@jonny@neuromatch.social No, beka. I didn't read the tweet, just the thread up to the diatribe about FOSS which describes the opposite of my experience. There's a culture of helping and building to make things easier, without dumbing down. Maybe he's not experienced that. It's one of the best things throughout my career, being helped and helping, each other and those we create for. Maybe the Apple side of FOSS is different from the Linux side? That would be an interesting explanation, but I don't know.

@jonny@neuromatch.social sure, individuals have blinds spots. We struggle to build beyond that because software attracts individualists, and mostly because we are dominated by capital which sets the rules for scaling up. There is though a strong culture in FOSS which contradicts her criticism. For boilerplate (which she chose) see Tauri, for languages and frameworks see Rust and Svelte. Go is a great argument for Rust IMO, but it does at least give people a choice. I hate it, but there are those who love it.
