It’s olive picklin’ time in Australia. So many people don’t harvest them and they are wasted. This is the simplest method IMO: Just pack them raw with cooking salt in jars and give them a turn/shake now and then. After a couple of weeks they are soft, so give them a couple of rinse cycles (maybe one day each?) to reduce the salt. That’s it. #gardening

Grrr. Antisemitism Envoy and Advance donor Jillian Segal is trying to gaslight the Royal Commission by accusing the ABC and SBS of bias against Israel. Her example was the ABC quoting a UN spokesman who said 40,000 children had been killed in Gaza. Turned out this figure was wrong and the ABC corrected it. The generally agreed figure is ‘only’ 20,000 children killed. 20,000. But as Israel keeps journalists out of Gaza while regularly killing those in the strip, hard numbers are hard to come by.
As for ABC bias, I have endured hours of false balance as they broadcast straight-up Israeli propaganda via their spokespeople. Segal’s problem is that they also broadcast non-Israeli information assessed by the ABC Ombudsman as unbiased. She wants an ‘independent body’ to assess complaints (one that can be stacked by governments), and the adoption of her questionable definition of antisemitism. Meanwhile Murdoch’s extreme pro-Israeli bias is apparently just fine. #auspol #Israel #genocide

OMG I just heard the very average singer/songwriter Deborah Conway whingeing to the Royal Commission that she had lost gigs because she was Jewish. I for one didn't even know she was Jewish until I heard her interviewed on Radio National, reciting the Israeli/Hasbara justifications for the genocide. I was swearing and throwing cushions at the radio especially when she was asked: "But what about all the children who have been killed?" She replied: "If you call a 17-year-old with an AK-47 a child". No, having seen footage of dismembered, bleeding toddlers, that was not the intent of the question. One Nation's resounding win in Farrer is a clear marker of the accelerating collapse of civilisation and the planet. It's a victory for racism, xenophobia, climate denial, gun culture and outright delusion. Its people are proud enough of these primitive vices to gleefully vote against their own interests. They tout the win as a victory for democracy, yet their polity is one of exclusion and oppression. They apparently adore Trump even as his narcissistic ideology destroys global harmony and their living standards along the way. They say they will bring down the costs of living and of housing without any policies to effect this except hatred and exclusion of migrants, ironic in a rural electorate that depends on migrant labour to work its farms. They want to reverse the growth of renewable energy in favour of fossil and nuclear generation, which would increase energy costs, greenhouse pollution and risk of toxic radiation. The televised celebration of One Nation and the laments of the defeated Liberals last night were painted pure white, not surprising given their white supremacist cultures. No-one remarked on that.
Their rise echoes that of populists Nigel Farrage in UK, whose supporters vote for him even though he caused many of their grievances by promoting Brexit. The grievances of the populists are genuine enough but their diagnoses and cures are laughable nonsense. Their supporters don't care. They have been whipped into anger against all the wrong targets, ultimately by right-wing billionaires and their greedy corporations, whose neoliberal dogmas are the very cause of the problems. Their evolving propaganda campaigns have constructed a delusional reality, a complete world that has an answer for every argument which is based on facts, logic and even emotional intelligence, but which appeals to the uneducated, largely male bogan elements and a faux flag-draped 'patriotism'. A perfect example is the smug, hubristic senator Malcolm Roberts who was gleefully hugging Pauline last night (after Barnaby had a go). I'm no climate scientist but I know enough to rebut every one of the false beliefs he can spout continuously in a stream of 'consciousness'.
Anyway enough of the epistle. It's a great day for Australian Jewry with Steven Lowy and Labor's Josh Burns appearing at the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and "Social Cohesion", bringing prominent coverage from the ABC to The Australian. Both men describe a litany of attacks, Lowy harking back to the brutal murder of his grandfather by Nazis at Auschwitz. Strangely, neither has mentioned Israel's own ongoing holoucaust against Palestinians or their own full-throated support of it. They use the same language, eg it all happened "after October 7", not "Once the genocide got into full swing", highlighting that widespread non-sequitur that "Evil Hamas attacks Jews so suddenly everyone hates Jews". The foreign actions of Iran were folded into general 'antisemitism', as were messages critical of Zionism. Islamophobia naturally received not a mention. Lowy said he now feels safer in Israel than Australia, perhaps an admission that Israel was "defending itself" against not much. #Israel #antisemitism #genocide
