mastodon 4.7.2
  • Open on mastodon.scot

Studied online in Edinburgh, attended the graduation IRL and absolutely fell in love with the place. If I were capable of generating my own body heat I’d move there in an instant. Unfortunately I’m a tropical fish so I’ll stay swimming around the islands of southern Japan. Originally Polish/Canadian/British, but my soul yearns for a loch.

Appreciator of architecture and urban planning, intrigued by all things STEM. Occasionally tries to art or knit.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social Sometimes it demands my attention, in a vivid sunset or a mossy forest. If I seek it too hard it slinks away, hides under the bed, won't be pulled out. If it gets out I fear it will never return, but if I don't think about it at all, it comes to me, curls up in my lap and stays a while. It needs to be fed, of course, and sometimes shoved screaming into a box to be taken to the vet. Afterwards it's sullen, but easily distracted with a length of yarn, and then it makes mischief.

@kimlockhartga@beige.party I am so sorry all that happened to you and I 100% believe it. I'm not American but I once rode a train from San Diego to LA with a group of pre-med students in the seats in front of mine. They were loud, they were belligerent, they were rude, and the whole ride was a stream of complaints and ghoulish derision about the clearly less than human patients they had observed. I can't understand how any of them had not been expelled in 1st year.

@Robotistry@fediscience.org @Quantensalat@scicomm.xyz @darkuncle@infosec.exchange @gregeganSF@mathstodon.xyz I think the idea is that using AI they can out-science the scientists and eliminate them from the equation thereby scraping more profit for themselves. These people really truly believe that eliminating humans from (checks notes) life, there will be more money and they can hold it all. Daft as a shrub full of badgers but since they currently hold the reins, also kinda dangerous.

I've been here for 27, so soon I guess?🤷 Last one was 1914 so in 2014 we all got a bit nervous. As my geologist friend pointed out, if it goes big you've got nothing to worry about. Because you won't be there...anymore.

@satuelisa@mastodon.social @Bronwyn@sfba.social Yeah, I really don't see as there's enough there to know how it will fall when finished. I'd finish it and then decide. I wouldn't expect the merino to shrink too too much, the nylon won't shrink at all, and the cashmere will shrink a lot. Someone above suggested a controlled shrink in a bucket. That sounds like the best bet. Not all shrunk things felt, I've shrunk sweaters on purpose without felting them.

@solsetur@famichiki.jp Ok but the thing that is making me very angry is the sentence 'can only be grown in a narrow band near the equator'. 😑 This is the widest part of the world. And the band is getting wider due to climate change. And why shouldn't it be grown there? Oh because we can't let people living in that band own the means of production, no, we have to have a group of California biotech bros control supply instead. So much more preferable..WHY?🤡

@SeaFury@aus.social I started with bamboo which was excellent as a beginner, nothing slipping off. But as I got better and faster, I found the bamboo to be snaggy, great for chunky yarns on fat needles still but have upgraded to steel and it's so much nicer. The smoothness helps compensate for arthritis flares too.

@CStamp@mastodon.social I still don't understand. People move and adapt. There are lots of Asian heritage Americans who don't eat rice on the regular, there are loads of non-Asians who do because it's a staple in the place the emigrated to. And Asia is a bit big. Not even all of Asia has rice as a staple and lots of non-Asian places do. For the first 25 years of my life there was no rice washing. For the next 25 there was. Which counts?

And we explain to ourselves that the females are usually drab brown because we are a ridiculous species of ape who have conditioned ourselves to view female as inferior, but to birds, that drab brown contains multitudes of colors that just confuse our eyes. If anything they are more brilliant.
