I was taking the bus home from BART and a woman just a little older than me asked me how long until the 51A came so I looked on the transit app and told her 15 min. She said she was very scared to wait alone for it (to be fair, that part of Broadway has no open businesses at 8 pm so when it’s dark I can see why it might be a little scary) so I abandoned my palms to take the 30 home and waited the extra 12 min with her. It was a good thing I did because she didn’t know where to wait for the bus, didn’t know to stand up and show the driver you’re taking it as opposed to staying on the bench, and didn’t know you could pay with a clipper card! She thought that was just for BART. Also didn’t know how to request a stop. And she kept saying how grateful she was I stayed because it’s so scary to wait for the bus alone at night. I gave up getting home 12 min faster and enjoying my podcast (talking to a stranger was not what I was feeling) but hopefully she learned some life skills?

I love 8th graders because I had a zoom session with someone who had very thoughtful questions about how the American colonists could found the colonies when Native people already lived there and why her history book only has part of one chapter on the Native people but chapters and chapters about the white colonizers...

All with Zoom filters giving her blue lipstick, a mustache, and reindeer antlers.

A friend and I who both get terrible seasonal depression are trying to come up with a list of things to do this winter to look forward to. Suggestions for beautiful/quirky/enjoyable/comforting/exciting local things to do and places to eat in the Bay Area especially east bay and San Francisco would be welcomed We’ve got: Beaches Hiking Find a hot tub somewhere The light festival thing at GG park What else? I hate winter. Hate hate hate hate. And I know California doesn’t have “real winter” and it doesn’t matter #sfba

Solidarity amongst Bay Area children apparently (according to my tutoring student) involves the entire class yelling “Jack is a they/them” at a substitute teacher who misgendered a kid. My student said Jack appreciated the correction on their behalf.

My grandmother passed away in April and her beloved cat is up for adoption in Novato. Abby is kind of a one-person cat from what we've seen. She adored Grandma but had no interest in the rest of us. I think she would be perfect for someone who lives alone and wants a dedicated companion but doesn't have other pets or a lot of people coming in or out (especially kids). Abby is 6 years old. Please feel free to share the listing. I really want her to find a new home. https://www.petfinder.com/cat/abby-1e9a8d40-e1ed-42ff-a907-99a7e3d86c74/ca/novato/jakes-place-cat-rescue-ca2182/details/

My 20-something trans cousin got up today at our grandmas memorial and talked about being afraid to come out to grandma because “she was already sick and what if she didn’t accept me and then she died when we weren’t ok.” Grandma was 88 when J came out to her by text; she had never knowingly met a trans person and very very few gay people. My cousin spent two days waiting for the answer and when it came it was “I love you so much” with a ton of heart emojis. It took two days because grandma wanted her answer to be perfect and worried it wouldn’t be. I miss my grandma.

I’m here to tell you all that, while the prep for a sigmoidoscopy is much better than for a colonoscopy, the procedure is worse because you feel it all.

It was quick but it was horrible and I was awake, so awake.

I think I’ve told you all about how much Zora loves men. (Human men). She loves humans in general but she LOVES MEN.

She’s met a few trans men lately and I here to report that Zora says:

Trans men are men. She doesn’t differentiate between trans and cis men.

This tour was not offered in English at all; I think this part of Mexico would be somewhat difficult to navigate without speaking Spanish. I get much better in Spanish after a few days in Mexico (if I’m somewhere where people don’t constantly try to speak English to me) Because of the altitude here, it gets cold at night and quite cold in the winter, with snow. This is the first church I’ve ever seen without marble/stone floors and the guide said they’re wooden because it helps keep the heat in

People always ask why I keep going to Mexico. Don’t I get bored of it? Don’t I want to go somewhere different (I do sometimes). But the truth is that each region in Mexico is so incredibly different that I do not get bored, not at all. Al contrario, I love learning about the history in each place. This trip, I have learned a tone about the virreinato (viceroyalty) which is when Spain ruled Mexico and is a bit different from colonies, for example, that the British did. I’ve also been learning a lot about the war for independence (against Spain), the second Franco-Mexican war (cinco de mayo) and the Mexican revolution (pancho Villa). I also learned a little about general santa Anna who lost half of Mexico to the US) and more about Porfirio Diaz, the dictator who inspired the Mexican revolution. I hadn’t known that Mexico changed its name and its constitution after the revolution: before that it was El Republico de Mexico and now it is Los Estados Unidos de Mexico.

I live next door to a chain pizza restaurant which, being a chain pizza restaurant, isn't the best pizza in town but it's good enough and it's NEXT DOOR. The franchisees are a Sikh family from India: middle-aged mom and dad and a few adult kids are the main employees, plus Grandpa who just sits in the parking lot and feeds pigeons. A year or so ago I made a point to introduce myself to the mom because we were always waving at each other. Now we say hi every time we see each other, and she cannot pronounce my name but she tries every time. And every time I go next door to buy pizza, she presents me with a free Pepsi and thanks me repeatedly for coming. It's very sweet. I don't like Pepsi, but I can't tell her that because it's a thoughtful gift and I would NEVER hurt her feelings, so now I need to find someone who wants my all my Pepsi!

I was feeling curious so I had a friend look up my college boyfriend on linked in (I myself am locked out of LinkedIn and being self-employed, don’t care enough to deal with it) because I was remembering that he told me in college that I was the smartest girl he knew.

And since then he has gotten a masters at UC Davis, an MBA at Yale, and a PhD at Oxford, so he probably feels great about himself.

However two things that I think are funny:

  1. He had to take the remedial upper division writing class in college because he didn’t test out of it like I did

  2. As a young adult he was worried about losing his integrity in the tech world so he got the word INTEGRITY tattooed on himself.

And, probably still sporting that tattoo, he now works…

…

…on the AI team at Meta. 😂

Insects as food
I ate grasshoppers in guacamole today! I’ve seen them offered in Mexico many times and have never had the nerve and today I did. They were crunchy and I offensive but it helps if you can not look at them.

Remember that former student in prison who asked for money and books? I sent him some books from amazon and told him I couldn’t send any money and he did not push back at all but thanked me for the books. So that’s good.

This is all over fb messenger and how does he get that in prison, i have no idea. But he’s reading and not asking me for money so those are good things.

"The billionaire who draws a white supremacist affiliated symbol on his hand and made his fortune off for-profit prisons, coal, and oil is the progressive choice is MAKING ME CRAZY"

At this point I don’t want Steyer in the general solely because I cannot handle his ads and mailers any more. So many mailers. So, so, so many unrecyclable (because of the shiny coating) mailers.

Maybe I can live with the bust and sleeves as is (I would like it more fitted but I don’t want to restart it) and just tighten it up under the arms? Ugh but it looks baggy. Or I can restart but the first 1/3 of it was just really tedious Or I can try shrinking it. Or I can give up on knitting forever 😂

there is an unhoused guy who was living in front of the park on the corner. He's got a cart with a bunch of stuff and a camping chair and tarp and kind of made his own space there, hangs out all day and sleeps on the sidewalk.

He moved across the streett in front of McDonalds which makes a lot of sense because I see people (I can see out my front window) offering him food and beverage a lot.

The problem now is that during the day he either sits in his camping chair (fine) or stretches out lying on the sidewalk with his feet sticking over the curb into an active traffic lane. No parking buffer or bike lane even, just active car traffic.

He doesn't respond at all when people talk to him except to accept food and I've seen people call the homeless outreach people and he waves them away and won't talk to them.

I'm worried for his feet/legs.
