Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net‑zero cities I do believe it's important to replace as many gasoline-powered cars with EVs, but as the article says, that effort alone would not be "good enough." Reducing car travels is crucial in achieving net-zero cities in a timely fashion. #ClimateCrisis #SafeStreets

Updating my #introduction!

I'm a Japanese living in Seattle, WA, married with a 6-year-old daughter. I write commercial database software for a living. Ironically, GNU/Linux is my primary and favourite operating system. My personal laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 running ChromeOS Flex.

I'm a big pedestrian/bicycle safety activist. I volunteer for a local advocacy group, Seattle Streets Alliance, to advocate for safe streets for everyone based on the
#VisionZero principle.

Nice to meet you, everyone.

@ascentale@sfba.social @SRLevine@neuromatch.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A6: MUPs are overrated. Where I live, the most well-known MUP—Burke Gilman Trail—has horrible pavement with tree roots pushing up the asphalt all over the place. I'd much rather take a low-traffic stroad with a shoulder. #BikeNite #BikeTooter #MastoBikes

@RayKuntz@mastodon.social @ascentale@sfba.social @MartyCormack@urbanists.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social I had the exact same problem. Hadn't changed the chain for a few years without thinking much, until one day, I took my bike to a bike shop to ask about this weird noise I kept hearing from the drivetrain. The mechanic took a look at it and immediately told me the chain was completely busted, and that I needed a new cassette. #BikeNite #MastoBikes #BikeTooter

New light: Ravemen FR300. I use Ravemen's AGM04 adapter to hang the light underneath my out-front mount. I tried the sandwich method but didn't like the bulk it created with my computer sitting on top of it.

Bike Industry, Please Stop Doing This

I agree with pretty much everything they said here—especially (1) Manufacturers should allow parts customization in orders, and (2) bike industry as a whole should focus on entry-level and/or endurance/all-road bikes.

I often hear that the urbanism discourse lacks perspectives from non-drivers. Is that true? As a self-identified urbanist who gets around almost exclusively by bike and transit, I find that inconceivable. I'd appreciate anyone's feedback on this.

It may make sense for tech giants, who rely heavily on AI, to demand water use prioritized for them. Of course, that by no means justifies it. Seattle has just enacted a year-long ban on AI data centres. I hope more municipalities follow suit.

@meganL@mas.to @kirk@social.coop I must agree here. Being an abled person, I never realized how ablest a lot of cycling infrastructure was, including cycle racks, bike compartments on the train, and bike boxes. For example, the bike section on the light rail here can only accommodate upright bikes with narrow handlebars. This is ridiculous. #CycleParkingAudit

What enrages me even more than a driver hitting a more vulnerable road user is a driver who does that AND then flees the scene. What kind of cold-blooded humans are they?
