I have a question about traveling in privacy with an electric car. If I'm using a car with a gasoline engine and I want to travel without being surveilled, I pay cash for fuel (among many other measures). It occurs to me that I can't charge my electric car in public without a credit card. This means that the government could theoretically track me, or even stop me from recharging completely (by invalidating the credit card). Have others thought about solutions to this? #ElectricCar

@chu@climatejustice.social It didn't do a bad thing "on its own." That's like me parking my car on a hill and not setting the parking brake, and when the car rolls down the hill and kills someone, we say "The car rolled down the hill on its own." Yeah, because the human who was responsible let it happen. This is not an AI problem, this is a human recklessness problem, and every story about it should be framed that way.

Republicans wanted to destroy the Voting Rights Act. Did they stop just because it seemed impossible? No. And they succeeded. They wanted to get rid of reproductive rights for women. Impossible. They succeeded. They want the President to have a private army, they've succeeded. So don't tell me how Trump will never see the inside of a jail cell, because I feel like demanding the impossible.

@MaryAustinBooks@mstdn.social @idyll@c.im We have a couple options. One, we add this to the charges Trump faces in a special Nuremberg-like tribunal, where immunity and Supreme Court precedent don't apply. Or, two, we try him for violating 18 U.S. Code § 597, in a regular Article 3 federal court, but AFTER dragging the six corrupt Supremes before the special tribunal. We should reject the idea of letting him get away with anything.

Here's a 2020 article from the New England Journal of Medicine, for those who want carefully vetted info on a previous outbreak of #hantavirus.

The high points for me:

  • There's person to person transmission.
  • Incubation periods ranged from 9 to 40 days.
  • Big social gatherings became super-spreader events.
  • Contact tracing and quarantine works.

I want an undeniable public permanent record of the proof of their criminality. That involves a lengthy trial, witnesses, cross examination. Months of the perpetrators getting up in the morning, changing into a suit to appear in court. Then the next trial, then the next. And when it's done, no one can pretend they were martyrs.

If we allow the fascists to run the government, it doesn't matter whether we have gerrymandering or not, because there won't be a democracy. I will not be marched off to one of Trump's concentration camps saying "Well, at least we played by the rules." We have to use ALL the means at our disposal to win, including the ruthless ones.

@juliehuz @indivisibleteam We don't have to sign the Rome Statute first. Under article 12 section 3 of the treaty, a non-signatory country like the U.S. can invite the ICC to take jurisdiction within our borders. (This is how Ukraine, another non-signatory country, has the ICC investigating thousands of Russian war crimes in Ukraine.) It's not enough to push the fascists out of power. There has to be accoutability for crimes against humanity, or we will have more crimes against humanity.

@TexasObserver@texasobserver.social Ranked choice voting gives the correct result. We should have ranked choice in the primary and in the general election. All a jungle primary can do is distort the result. Members of political parties have the right of free association. If that means anything, it means they should be able to nominate candidates of their choosing. (And yes, with ranked choice voting in place, that should extend to minor parties too.)

RE: https://left-bank.net/@BlueDot/116007618237564822 @JoelBarr@mastodon.online, we have to defeat the fascists in the short term to get rid of undemocratic jerrymandering in the medium term. For now, that has to include tactics like California: a partisan jerrymander, approved by voters, that will expire when the emergency is over. I'd also support lots of other ruthless tactics until we have pushed the fascists out of power, and are able to implement a fascism-resistant democracy. @jik@federate.social

I once spent a bunch of time on the embedded software for a system used on an electronics assembly line. There were some moving parts, so I was very careful to put safety warnings in the user interface, e.g., "keep your hands clear." When I helped install it, I found out that none of the end users were English speakers.

@juliehuz There are plenty of progressive Democrats thinking about a run for President in 2028. Our job is to make sure they hear from us before the primary, and let them know that Trump roaming free is simply an unacceptable outcome. I don't care whether the trials happen at the Hague or in some new Nuremberg-style tribunal stood up for this specific purpose. It is simply unrealistic to think that we can defeat fascism without holding fascist criminals to account.

@juliehuz @indivisibleteam I assume it could be done by Presidential executive order alone, same as all other foreign policy. And yes, it would have to be done after the fascists are dislodged from the White House. But I wouldn't call it a dead letter. We need the fascists to understand, today, that there will be a future reckoning. We need them to understand that pardons don't count at the ICC, nor does a statute of limitations. Let them start, today, being scared to collaborate.
