Far-right criminal #fascist Danny Tommo arrested for slashing an inflatable boat with someone aboard. The crimes he's been arrested for carry multiple years in prison, and he's got previous for violent crime.

With hindsight, perhaps this joke is a bit too obscure.

@maxpool The machine is now in the Science Museum in London. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillips_Machine
They've got a computer simulation next to it, so you can have a play with the controls.
Gives a new meaning to the phrase "cash flow".
It was also parodied by #TerryPratchett in "Making Money" with the "Glooper", which simulated the economy of Ankh-Morpork.

@fediversereport I remember when the original UK data protection act came in in 1984. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/35/enacted
One immediate question was whether it applied to #Usenet, which was the original federated social media. The general feeling was yes it probably did, but it was impossible for a Usenet node to comply. So everyone ignored the problem, and no legal issues ever arose.

@TarkabarkaHolgy My Mum taught herself to dye wool with natural dyes, and then later to spin it. I did suggest that a sheep was the next logical step, but it never happened.

@MachineLordZero True, but on the flip side it's also because women have access to birth control, education and jobs, which means that their lives are no longer entirely dominated by some man.

@mullvadnet It's even more absurd that if this bill passes, the US government will be the only organisation in the world prohibited from buying this data. Big business, organised crime, hostile governments; just set up a front company and have at it!

@moriel @stux War crimes are determined by effects rather than means. A bridge that forms a key part of the infrastructure in a functioning city, and is necessary for civilian food and water supply, is likely out of bounds. The same bridge will be a legitimate target after the city is largely evacuated and has become a war zone. It's a matter of proportionality. And yes, that is vague and handwavy, but it's all the law we have.

@http_error_418@hachyderm.io @ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us OK, 7/7 was an exception to the general rule about incompetent wannabes. But the main point about the lethality of the IRA at the time the legislation was passed, stands.
It certainly wasn't passed to stop grandmothers from holding placards.

@http_error_418@hachyderm.io @ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us Because at the time the IRA was an actual threat to life and limb. They had a command structure, financing, a political wing for propaganda, specialist bomb makers, and plenty of experience in staging atrocities with a high body count. Everyone since has been an incompetent wannabe by comparison.

@stux@mstdn.social The bridge in question is here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/oLpD29gPW7xJVuDy5
To the north is the Antonivsky bridge over the Dnieper, which was destroyed back in 2022. But Ukraine has now cut off the marshes between these two bridges, which means it may be planning to retake them.

@Alice Visited a stately home once, and they had a refuge for unwanted parrots. Seems lots of people think it would be cool to have a parrot without realising what a demanding high-maintenance animal it is.
Anyway, there was one bird that just kept saying "hello", non-stop, in every different tone of voice imaginable. And I can well imagine the owners wanting to be rid of it after a few days of that. Or even a few hours.

We don't go round hopin', we walks.
We don't go in for this singing all day,
And twittering about, we just squawks.

@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social Many years ago, I was staying at a hotel on business and was meeting a female colleague there. I asked for her at the front desk, and they wouldn't give me her room number but did undertake to call her and give her mine. This was obviously SOP, and I'm amazed that a major hotel chain like Travelodge didn't have that.

@laprice @FeloniousPunk You'd want to make it the median, not the mean, otherwise the logical thing would be for everyone to set their preferences to min or max in the hope of moving things just a bit. I'm also unsure how that would handle compound factors like taxation rates and thresholds.

@FeloniousPunk @laprice Modern democracies are caught in a bind between the need for democratic accountability and the need for experts who know how to run the system. Neither is stable on its own, but they don't mix well either.
For an exploration of the tension, see Yes Minister (clips on YouTube). Democracy is represented by Jim Hacker, and Techocracy by Sir Humphry Appleby. https://youtu.be/FsSaSdGwlOY?si=EgvdVzTrYomX11uE

@laprice @FeloniousPunk But the real problem with direct democracy is bandwidth. Government is a big complex problem, and most people have neither the time nor inclination to become policy wonks. So they will vote with gut reaction, meaning that they can easily be manipulated by media campaigns. So again, power goes to the people with money to run such campaigns.
Not that I've got any better ideas, I freely admit.

@Natasha_Jay@tech.lgbt This was, of course, designed for right-handers: you hold the handset in your left hand to leave the right free to push buttons, make notes, whatever.
Most phones are made that way round, but on most you can at least put the handset on the other way around, or it's designed to be picked up with either hand. This one, on the other *hand*, is aggressively unusable by lefties.
