If black people don't have rights; you don't have rights. If Muslims don't have rights, you don't have rights. If transgender people don't have rights, you don't have rights. If women don't have rights, you don't have rights. If you allow anybody's rights to be compromised then you are putting your own rights in question.

So our President got up on stage yesterday and gave a speech that was intended to kick off a red scare, Labeling anyone who isn't personally loyal to him a commie domestic terrorist that his security goons can grab. We're supposed to be terrified and cowed; but mostly I'm disgusted and bored with this fool and can't wait for him to die.

Occasionally I think about how Bush vs. Gore could have gone the other way and we might have had a chance to avert global warming and fulfill the "promise of America". And then I remember that Tipper Gore (who would have been first lady in that scenario) was the driving force behind the moral panic about cuss words on rap records.

I simply cannot take JD Vance' religious pretentions seriously. A convert to a famously hierarchical religion who refuses to acknowledge it's supreme authority simply cannot be taken seriously. I suspect it's a performance to impress his real patron; whose religious aspirations involve declaring Greta Thunberg the antichrist.

Your regular reminder that DJT is not bound by common sense. Last I heard, drilling on a sovereign nations territory without asking permission first is an act of aggression. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/aug/08/greenland-iwarning-trump-linked-oil-firm-prepares-drill

Does anyone else think that Donald Trump sounds like an AI? His statements are completely disconnected from reality or any truth value. He is sycophantic to those listeners predisposed to like him. He was trained on poorly researched and sourced garbage and regurgitates it as fact. Everything he's involved with is an assault on human dignity.

That Patriot Front demonstration is disgusting and shameful yes. But it is almost laughably small. #nokings pulls numbers like that in places like Bakersfield. The fascists are weak enough to be destroyed by organized resistance. That's why they rely on violence.

@xan@xantronix.social LinkedIn consensus is false consensus. People who can build, run and understand systems involving software will never not be needed. But the delusion that they can be dispensed with in favor of automation will continue as long we allow managers who indulge it to fail upwards. The current wave of AI is a management groupthink engineered to disempower one particular group of skilled human workers and will not run it's course until its most vocal proponents are visibly seen to fail. My suggestion is to look at roles where the understanding is required but the label does not say software developer; at least until the OpenAI bankruptcy and sell-off.

The thing Bezos should be really worried about is not that someone fabricated a quote where he said Data Centers should have priority access to clean water over humans. It's the part where so many people found it plausible that he said it.

Spending the morning attempting to scroll; in company of a cat who is purring and snuggling and occasionally throwing himself between my eyes and the phone. Like a slightly peeved fur-covered pop-up advertisement for the health benefits of cat hair.

One of my all time faves from the American literary canon is Ambrose Bierce. The devil's dictionary was basically shitposting for the railroad era. And then he disappeared in Mexico, setting an aspirational standard for gringos everywhere.

It would be nice if Elon Musk seeing the inside of a french prison as an involuntary guest were on the table. But he has good lawyers and can afford the bribes to be notified of any planned detainment far enough ahead of time to flee beyond the reach of the authorities.

I seem to remember that Trump doesn't like drunkards because his older brother died of alcohol poisoning.

An FBI director who is running around handing out personalized bottles of Bourbon emblazoned with his name and the FBI shield seems like he would be on thin ice.

I bet you Tbone reminds him that he could be fired on every phone call and chat.

The high school near me went on lockdown this morning.

Apparently because some boys posted gun pics.

And apparently there was a swatting incident over by campus earlier this week that I had not heard of.

That's life in America these days.

@aspeed@lgbtqia.space IDK, most of the people he's worked with, including all of the acts that bailed on him and Macklemore himself were moved to say that he was their friend and they hoped he'd see the light. I do think it's an example of how someone can be trapped in certain structures of thought around what is and is not acceptable and what hierarchies they need to maintain. It is a bit concerning that someone at the center of the sort of money and influence that can sell out 50K seat venues is so hapless and out of touch with his collaborators that something like this can happen. In the best case scenario this is a growth opportunity for him and he will be back on the side of peace. But more likely he just fucks off into the insulated privacy that being a multi-millionaire can provide.
