Can you recreate a 3D wind turbine from public satellite imagery? I've been experimenting with detecting turbine rotation from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. It works by exploiting the time difference between each spectral band captured during a single pass. When stitched together this creates an animation long enough to see the turbine rotating. That got me wondering; could I go further and recreate a full 3D model from the same imagery? And it turns out, yes!

Northwest Europe's electricity network* visualised in Blender *mostly… It shows all the major high-voltage transmission lines, inter-connectors, power stations, wind farms, solar farms and more. Colours show line voltage if available, and only power lines above 132 kV are visible unless they are offshore. What other countries would you like to see?

Unfortunately I never got to know him as he died when I was a baby, though I have a feeling we share a lot in common. I also have his old Dragon 32 computer that he was using to learn programming in the 1980s, with reams of hand-written code that still works on the computer.

I only found this photo in recent years and have since learned that he was actually instrumental to the construction of the entire droid, particularly with working out how to machine the complex shapes like the dome and legs out of single sheets of aluminium. He didn't just build one either, he ended up constructing a handful of the droids for various uses in the film. I still have no idea how he did it, especially without modern software and computer-controlled machining.

Twice the output for nearly half the number of wind turbines… This is exactly why re-powering is such an important tool for levelling-up the renewable assets we already have. I'm very curious to dig into the plans once they are published later in the week. https://www.scottishpower.com/w/plans-to-repower-iconic-whitelee-the-uk-s-largest-onshore-windfarm

What if you could visualise how electricity flows from a wind farm in Scotland to your home in London? Ok it's not quite that simple, but it got me thinking that there must be a way of visualising the complexity of the electricity transmission grid in Great Britain. This is my first attempt…

Do I need a reason to add a retro halftone print effect for Turbine Tycoon?

I've always loved the warm analogue style of mid-century printed media, particularly the retro-futuristic illustrations seen in Eagle magazine. It's an effect I've wanted to explore and apply to my work for a long time.

Constraints on the electricity transmission network between Scotland and England (as well as further north in Scotland) mean that we can't move enough energy across the border without overloading the system. Imagine a cup constantly filling with water, if your straw is too thin then you won't be able to drink enough water before the cup overflows. In our case the straw is the electricity grid at the border, and the water is the energy generated by the wind farms in Scotland.

Animating Storm Amy in 1km resolution

The first named storm of the 2025/26 season, Storm Amy broke the UK's October low-pressure record.

The highest recorded gust was 96mph, though it's possible there were even higher gusts as a power outage knocked out the recording station.

This visualisation shows the wind speeds as the storm passes over the country, alongside the output from wind and gas power plants.

Genuinely excited about the plug-in solar news in the UK, I'll absolutely be doing this!

I've wanted solar for ages but I have a weird roof so the idea of experimenting with something simple in the garden or on the garage is very appealing.

Patiently awaiting more on exactly how this is going to work and when we'll be able to buy and plug these devices in 👀

What does it look like to build one of the world's largest offshore wind farms, one month at a time?

Each cell in the grid shows a full month of construction, using AIS data from Kpler to follow every single vessel as they go about the installation and commissioning of the giant 1.2GW wind farm.

Every time I play this I notice something new, like the methodical survey pattern on the right of the wind farm in April. Or the impact of bad weather causing the vessels to occasionally halt work.

However, the electricity is still needed in the south (it's still thirsty) so what happens next is that we replace that lost wind energy at the last minute with electricity generated via (usually) gas. This is not only a waste of low-carbon energy, it's also expensive. You can see this play out on my map and in the attached visual: 🚦 Traffic-coloured lines show boundary constraints 🟡 Yellow rings show wind farms that were turned off 🔴 Red rings show gas plants that were turned on

Any overflowing water would be bad news for the grid so we do everything we can to avoid it. The result is that we pay generators in Scotland to reduce their output so the cup doesn't overflow. Wind farms are usually picked for this because they are the cheapest to switch off and can provide the volumes of energy needed to resolve the constraints.

The beautiful data views in SimCity (2013) directly inspired my early data visualisation work and are partly responsible for me picking it up as a career.

It's now 13 years since that game was released.

Back in the year 2000, a 13-year-old me would have had to wait another 13 years to play it. That's a lot of thirteens…

It wasn't my favourite in the series — the online-only launch was a shambles — but it was arguably the most influential of the SimCity games for me personally.

RIP Maxis 😢

Why hide behind marketing speak and hypotheticals when we can show you what the real data says about real installations in real homes? Let's talk about the data that's here right now, not hypothetical arguments. Few energy suppliers will go out of their way to put data like this out for the public. And when the request for this transparency comes right from the top, you know you're in the right place. It's yet another reminder of why I've spent the last 4+ years at Octopus.

Nearby Dogger Bank B also has also recently started exporting to the grid, with an estimated six turbines installed so far (according to REMIT). Both are starting to catch up Dogger Bank A which, while having all of it's 96 turbines installed, is currently ramping generating back up again after hitting a few hurdles during construction. Once all three wind farms are complete they'll be outputting a combined 3.8GW on windy days, that's a hell of a lot of power being extracted from the wind.

Uncovering the hidden patterns during the construction of Dogger Bank A, one of the world's largest offshore wind farms…

Like yesterday's animation, each cell in the grid shows a full month of construction, using AIS data from Kpler to follow every single vessel as they go about the installation and commissioning of the giant 1.2GW wind farm.

This time all vessel movement can be seen at once for each month, which suddenly shows all the hidden patterns and careful choreography.

@nick I believe that was more related to (or at least the reason given) the general cost of energy in GB. So partly related as constraints do increase the electricity costs, though infrastructure to fix this will also cost a lot so it's not a simple comparison. It's partly why so many data centres in the US are using their own fleet of gas-fired generators. Shit for the environment mind you, and I doubt GB would allow them.

It’s been a pleasure helping break down the frankly insane amount of raw data into insights around fleet-wide efficiency and how performance changes with temperature. It also tops the list as the dashboard with the longest name that I've ever worked on…

Do we have first power at Dogger Bank B?

According to the balancing data we have 26MW of output today at Dogger Bank B, which will eventually have an installed capacity of 1.2GW.

This also implies two (out of 95) of the 13 MW Haliade-X wind turbines have been installed in recent weeks.

The data first appears on the morning of March 11th with 13MW of reported output, which also aligns with a single turbine being installed at the time.

@Ryanteck@fosstodon.org Ah got it. So the rings on the map and the output data is only available for wind farms that are connected to the transmission grid. I literally can't get access to the data for the other ones unfortunately (so ~18% of wind farms by volume don't have data)

@kim@social.gfsc.studio Fair, we're working on improving that as actually that remaining 20% is not all more expensive – most is at least on parity with gas. Also not necessarily a huge capital expense, though that depends on each property, grants, etc.
