Software developer, Manchester UK. On extended sabbatical from corporate dev while I work on some personal projects, but it looks like someone set fire to the real world while I've been busy... Currently working on a space game project that is frankly too large for one person.

@flyingpenguin@infosec.exchange @joepie91@fedi.slightly.tech I've seen aggressive bro movements come and go, and I'm convinced that a lot of it is just about "winning". Once a lot of these guys think they can see where the tide is going, they follow, hurling abuse at the other team, righteous and self justified.

@MLE_online@social.afront.org @futurebird@sauropods.win It's amazing what billions in PR do to distort reality. My dad was commenting the other day on spacex - he had got the impression that the AI stuff must be the profitable part of the business... Normal people really don't know what's real right now.

@shac@ioc.exchange @lproven@social.vivaldi.net My personal observation from before the current era was that companies ( well - product teams ) would block any reworking of codebases out of fear of creating more problems and not adding new functionality. This ultimately creates a situation where senior management see the opportunity to create a new team / product for reasons of internal politics using the degraded performance / bug ridden nature of the product as evidence of why this should happen.

Hey, remember when the EU decided that search engines had to pay news sites for scraping them and displaying their content in search results...
Man, those were the days.

@RogerBW@discordian.social @futurebird@sauropods.win I think it depnds on how lucky you got with the classmate randomizer really.. Personally, I think sadism is an outlet for frustrated kids who don't know better, and whatever crap will stick is what they'll choose. And for sure, there are consequences to that choice, but ultimately it's just whatever was to hand in the moment.

@thief_of_fire@infosec.exchange @fazalmajid@social.vivaldi.net @codinghorror@infosec.exchange The main problem with UBI for all is you need to stop the rent seekers jumping in and claiming it all, with the insane asset price inflation that would immediately happen as a consequence. Discussion of UBI never seems to address this - you need price controls, and state provision of most needs in order to stabilise the economy before you can introduce such a system.

Conspiracy theorists them selves appear to be attracted to the things that make them paranoid, reinforcing their anxiety surrounding the topic in question.

@audunmb@todon.nl @davidgerard@circumstances.run My understanding is probably crap, but don't coding models need to be not heavily quantised? Essentially, fairly memory heavy, while the cost to run is hardware plus electricity? So, unless china is able to innovate much harder, or get much cheaper electricity, I'm not sure how they'd cost less - wage arbitrage doesn't really factor into this one...

Problem of the day... Compressing height field data as BC4 gives us 4 bits per texel, but you have to normalise the height field. Fine, you say, extract the min / max, normalize the field and then denormalize on render.
The problem comes when you have a large min / max range - like here where there's a sheer cliff included in the terrain patch, the top of the range becomes quantized, presumably because of floating point issues, and we end up with accidental minecraft.

@lritter I have this theory that this is why you get a sudden explosion of frameworks in any language that exceeds a given popularity - once there's too much to learn people just make their own thing causing this exponential growth in the amount of *stuff*.

Hey, remember when everyone was just openly pirating music and games, and software piracy established Adobe as the main vendor of creative tools, and in the end, piracy was just so convenient and ubiquitous that they just abolished copyright law because everyone was doing it?

@psychicparrot42 Oof - unintended consequences! TBH, it's always the way with the lumbering ineptitude of the state... They really need a mechanism to try stuff out and then review the changes. It is, however, a marked difference to the "Yeah, just pour it all into the slopage machine, be reet!" system we currently suffer.

@lritter I think the drivers are different in other fields... There are emotional motivators for music, fiction, arts. I'd say there is also a difficulty threshoild for people - making a new MVC framework can be fairly easy... You can smash a simple one out in a weekend. There is clearly an optimum for the kind of product that has the potential to suffer this growth curve. I agree.

I think the problem with regarding the advent of LLMs for coding / diffusion for asset production as some sort of personal grief process that has to be dealt with is that the moment you think "well if this is how things are we might as well get on with it" you are now confronted with the practical reality that it might turn out that you don't own the code you've made / that you have effectively made a beautiful montage that you can never sell once the case law has stabilised //

@lritter Problem would be you import a framework and it just asks for everything.. Every cascaded dependency. I think it would be better, but the way things are at the moment you'd just have to sign over everyhthing the moment you imported anything. Libs like "coloured command line text" type things would be ... Well - they couldn't exist really.

Google search AI mode's references are such a heap of crap - it spits out some facts and then provides a link to a forum - you read the posts in the forum. They have nothing to do with the information presented. I search for the information presented, it's not in google's index, or they're keeping it secret.
The only way, if the search works, that it knows the presented information is that that information comes from a source that they do not want to reveal.

@tante@tldr.nettime.org I think the main issue for those genuinely using it to brainstorm is that they will never know what they are copying. For those using it to research, the information presented will be similar to that presented to your peers and competitors. Business advice - homogenous slop to all, and you might use it to see what the market might be thinking, but just by looking, it's influencing your choice. At least you can check the hallucinations, but that does require having research skills.
