And this just guarantees that no-one will be able to trust the results.
Google just destroyed their Search market. 🤦

Ed Zitron being his usually-blunt self on The Tech Report today:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B07mYv-IeU8
One point that Ed made stands out for me.
"We are not talking about the technology. We are talking about the financial engineering."
I saw the same thing in 1999/2000/2001, where start-up's that seemed vaguely sensible started playing the stock market, instead of running the core business, as playing the stock market had become their core business... 🤦

Also, remember in Scotland, the plan was to ban smoking on the public streets, but then the Fossil Fuel lobbies argued against that, as if the ban went through, and people still died of respiratory problems, they would find out where the problems really came from... :|

Listening to more podcasts about the cognitive effects of LLM-use on their users, reminds me of what happens when someone is promoted into a supervisory role, so their direct skills start to atrophy.
The real problem with AI is that it's turning us all into middle managers! 🤣

Perhaps the cow could be in a "Quantum Superrposition", so it's alive and dead at the same time, and as a bonus, you'll be lined up for the next bubble already... :))

Some of the anti-hacking insurance policies require you to use an ad-blocker, as ad-blockers stop drive-by malware installation.
One of the categories that advertisers use to classify their potential victims is OS version.
Malware writers buy adverts that are only shown to un-patched machines, where the advert automatically re-directs to a malware installation site.

They aren't charging because they have lock-in.
It's too early for that.
They're charging because they need to demonstrate profitability before they either IPO or crash'n'burn...

There are times when I feel like we are living through a Peter Watts story.
"Maelstrom" has this, the 2nd book in the Rifters trilogy.
Content Warning:
It's a Peter Watts story.
"Sometimes when I am feeling optimistic, hopeful, and, feel like the universe is a wonderful place, I read a Peter Watts story, until it all goes away." :D

I did a 3-month internship contract for Nortel in the '90's, and it was the primary reason I have avoided working for large corporates ever since. :D

I remember seeing job listings that required 7+ years of experience in a 5-year-old programming language.
At one meet-up, I mentioned this to someone who worked at the company, and they told me that the company's CEO was obsessed with trying to poach members of the dev team that had created the language. :D
They also told me that same CEO was under-pricing the salaries, so no-one wanted to jump ship... 🤦

I saw the same with programming languages in the late 90;s.
They were trying to poach people from the original dev team.

Ad-blocking never stopped being a security measure.
It's a base required-action to qualify for any anti-hacking insurance policies.

This was identical to BT Internet in the late 1990's being caught changing the contents of the pages they were serving to their end-customers, displaying the adverts chosen by BT, rather than by the web-page creators.
The UK CPS refused to charge BT under the UK's computer hacking laws, as each advert on every web-page served would count as a separate charge.
Being found guilty would have bankrupted BT.
This refusal to charge has been used against the CPS in later cases... :D

"
IIRC, Microsoft and maybe Adobe once tried to claim they had IP rights over anything created in their software.
"
Not IN their software.
They wanted copyrights to everything created WITH their software.
Use an MS compiler, the resulting software belongs to MS.

Hold the manager, who said, "use this tool or we will fire you", responsible.
Hold the C-Suite, who listened more to the AI salesmen than to their technical staff, responsible for everything that goes wrong.

In the early 2000's, at the same conferences where Ballmer was shouting "Developers! Developers! Developers!", he was also talking about the GPL being "like a cancer".
"Use any GPL programmes and you lose the copyright to the GPL!"
This rang well until someone asked Ballmer, "Does that mean that anything written with MS Office belongs to Microsoft?"
IIRC, Ballmer ignored the question, but there was drop in the MS stock price just after that.

Alexa Terranova from "Somebody Stop Her" series by Vitaly S. Alexious.
https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/73967/somebody-stop-her
It's one of the best introductions to Vitaly's meta-narrative universe. :D
The whole story starts reasonably sensibly, but becomes completely deranged... :D

There are a feww taking place already.
Calum Kerr was running one set that traversed different parts of London looking at interesting rubble.
Another set was running that started from Southwark Graveyard. They do some excellent remembrance ceremonies towaeds Samhain.
Another one that I heard about from other members of London Hackspace, was looking at the industrial archeology found in London's archotecture. :D

That's fair enough, but they've worked with more windows software, so they will have an idea if the software can be set up to work at all. :D
Then you'll know whether it is possible, and you can start to work on the problem of making it simple for a non-technical user. :D .
I've had to do similar things, when transferring some of my old customers away from MS systems.
