I'm really enjoying Emacs-Jabber in its revived form! It's already looking like it'll become my main XMPP client. It's really good, and looks nicely hackable, so if I think it can be improved, I can ... just change it

@simon_brooke@mastodon.scot Back in the 1990's I programmed Perl professionally and it was truly amazing to see the reactions of other Perl programmers to functional Perl. Mostly negative but occasionally like a bolt of enlightenment. I suppose it shouldn't be that surprising that it has good syntactic support for call-with style functions, as Perl has everything in there somewhere @vnikolov@ieji.de @janneke@todon.nl @spook@pleroma.m68k.church

@simon_brooke@mastodon.scot @vnikolov@ieji.de @janneke@todon.nl @spook@pleroma.m68k.church The thing I found interesting about functional programming in Perl is just how much the language (not APIs obviously) did not work against you. Refer to things by value, don't try to mutate references, use closures, and things are easier. The ref counter doesn't get confused. The whole language and a lot of its weird warts just ... work.

I'm planning ahead for someone's 50th birthday gift, and I'd like to get them some aged oolong. Does anyone on here have recommendations for tracking down aged oolong ideally from 1980 (or thereabouts) ? Public or private recommendations would be appreciated! @tea@fedigroups.social #tea

@iaruffell@mastodon.scot @Merovius@chaos.social @dr2chase@ohai.social I think it's mostly because their actions betray their beliefs. As you say, some of them are opposed to accessibility accommodations because they're in favor of opression of disabled people. Mostly those same people are actively looking for reasons to gather files on you, police your behavior, betray your kids' privacy. When I look at the individuals who are spending effort on maintaining and improving accessibility (or often trying to build back up to a previous level that was wantonly destroyed), those are not the ones jumping on the censorship bandwagon

@federicomena@mstdn.mx I have an electric Renault, so the nice thing is that anywhere that can handle general Renault service can handle the minor things it needs (tyres, filters, eventually aircon). Break pads eventually too, but as others have mentioned that's not a big thing for EVs. A colleague had rust on his EV's discs from underuse ! Choosing an easy-to-service manufacturer is a decision I'm very happy with

@ephemeral I was trained as a printer and binder in the early 1990's just as the classical matting and typesetting techniques were on their last legs. Getting TeX and PostScript installed on my PC was my main motivator for running Linux, because that was so obviously the future. When I went off to university, the job market absolutely dried up, and I switched to working in shipyards for extra income (plus I got myself blacklisted because of labour agitation). I enjoyed being one of only two people I was aware of at the university with custom calling cards and personalised notebooks 😹

@godsandcroziers@pagan.plus The presumption that if something isn't directly attested to in the written record that it has died out, leads to a lot of strange conclusions. Similar to the claims that eg keening didn't survive into the 20th Century and any 21st Century practice is a revival. Where if you just go and ask the ladies where they learned it, they'll tell you. At least, if you're in the extended clan, and not a folklorist or historian.

@fedora@fosstodon.org What are you doing to ensure this doesn't happen in future? I understand that the US-based Fedora organization will follow US laws, but giving the US government the power to cut people off of free software is a problem. How are you going to ensure that your US organization is unable to shut off access to Fedora?

@zersiax@cupoftea.social I was thinking of translation/localisation of software or websites. I could see LLMs helping make that work faster and better, but what we get instead is 'the llm translated everything, it's grand' and me sitting there needing to mentally translate back to the original English to make any sense of the UI I'm also happy to try to learn enough to do things like eg order tea entirely in Chinese ... but I also think people should be able to use their computers in their own language. It's not quite the same as accessibility, in that theoretically someone could learn enough English to use mainstream tech in English. But if they haven't done so by middle age, it rapidly approaches "just learn to see" territory

@kevinhiggins@mstdn.social Thinking about it, I wonder if it's a slightly misguided attempt to get you to not waste time worrying about typographical conventions around punctuation. It's a small enough thing that it's not worth correcting someone on, and it might be a waste of brainpower. That approach would absolutely backfire for me though. I just gorged myself on details of typographical conventions in German when I learned the language!
