Hotter take, capitalism
As a worker-owner, your income scales with the output of the firm. You are naturally incentivized to be productive and efficient. As an employee, your income is fixed, any surplus accrues to the capitalist owner. You are incentivized to be *just* productive enough not to get fired. So capitalism decouples production from market signals. And must replace them with surveillance and power. That's the opposite of the commonly told story. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Whoop Whoop! 🥳 We got a GOEXPERIMENT for generic methods!
This will make it much easier to prepare my PRs that should only get merged in Go 1.27 😅

This is extremely worrying to me. Not being able to use any service using reCaptcha is… pretty disruptive, to say the least. *Really* hope the EU stomps this one out – but even if it does, that will take a long time…

Okay, I can't possibly be the first one to have come up with this, but. You know when billionaires talk about how AI is going to generate trillions of wealth and make all workers obsolete and anyways, AGI™ is just around the corner? I propose we call that "Slopaganda"

Was man stattdessen tun sollte?

By the way: one very specific thing we learned from WW2 is that bombing civilians of a totalitarian regime does *nothing*.
There is no "morale" to destroy, they can not pressure their government to stop the war. It's just needless cruelty, fostering never-ending resentment (ask the people of Dresden).
There's a reason (well… debatable) the US dropped *two* nukes, three days apart: the Japanese regime didn't care about one of their cities getting wiped out.

@ZachWeinersmith This is, in my opinion, one of the funniest aspects of political economics: that China is probably the best empirical argument in favor of capitalism, yet capitalists are unwilling to use it - because it means admitting that capitalism and democracy are orthogonal.

@ericwastl@hachyderm.io Honestly, good changes, in my opinion. I thought the global leaderboard should've gone a few years ago anyways, when LLMs started being a thing. And I did end up conflicted because doing AoC always took too much time towards the end, but I also didn't want to stop halfway. So really, I welcome both of these changes.

This isn't specific to AI, it applies to other things as well. "This steak", "this plastic bag", "this drive"… But tech people should know, that small numbers become large at scale, and vice-versa. Saying "this prompt used…" is like saying "we serve millions of requests a month" (so single-digits per second, at best) in reverse - just trying to make the number look small, instead of large.

@cstross@wandering.shop @quixoticgeek@social.v.st @vaurora@mstdn.social Yeah, definitely agree. That's also my disagreement with @StefanThinks@beige.party FWIW: the literal entire point of taxes is to force people to pay for stuff they don't want to pay for. There's a *lot* of people who don't want to pay for "big bird and healthcare", for example. At the *very* least, we need taxes to price in externalities. That we are paying for the wrong things is, as you say, a political problem. And capitalist anarchism isn't the answer.

@LaF0rge I know little about the situation, but as a German: Yes. If it's 1942 and you found someone working at Thyssen or something contributing to the Linux kernel, you should absolutely kick them out. Some of our current problems are due to Nazis not getting kicked out vehemently enough after the war. The naivete of your comparisons makes me a bit angry TBQH. Russia is actively fighting an unjust war today - including in the information sphere. Germany hasn't been doing that for 80 years.

@IsaacOstlund@mastodon.world Not a fan of Musk or his companies, but this reads like a lack of numeracy. You are comparing absolute $-amonuts, when the relative numbers - what percentage of their budget comes from subsidies - seems far more relevant. If I ran a lemonade stand, with lemonade made from 100% state sponsored lemons, it would be more "state funded" than either NPR or Musk's companies, even if the absolute amount would be less than $100.

@cstross@wandering.shop @quixoticgeek@social.v.st This seems a bit reductive as well. Representatives do more than simply vote and even then, they don't necessarily vote with their block. Even just a primary candidate who doesn't win has *an effect* - and that could be almost anybody. The alternative to "if enough voters" is authoritarianism and certainly not what I would prefer.

@cstross@wandering.shop @quixoticgeek@social.v.st @vaurora@mstdn.social That's MMT, isn't it? Isn't the mainstream economic view still, that money is created by commercial banks via credit? I'm not saying you need to subscribe to mainstream theory (I certainly don't), but it seems a bit strong to make normative statements in this tone, about a heterodox theory. Seems more useful to be pluralist about it.

@kortschak I mean, I'm biased. I just *really loved* Ada Palmer's writing. Which is enough to humanize Machiavelli and make him a pretty sympathetic figure - not "good", but her thesis is that he was basically a patriot, wanting what's best for Florence. If I wanted to overcome my biases, I would have to read *significantly* more than I'd be willing to - I'm fine just accepting my limitations here ^^

@cstross@wandering.shop @StefanThinks@beige.party @quixoticgeek@social.v.st @vaurora@mstdn.social But that's a very different statement. I don't think anyone doubts that government "plays a role". But if banks create money by credit, the amount of money created depends on demand for credit. Hence central banks try to control money supply by setting the interest rate. I don't think that's good. Or that MMT is wrong as a theory. But it seems wrong calling something a "misunderstanding" that *in practice* matches the currently implemented policies.
