I think we should have universal healthcare because we should take care of each other. The other reasons are good, too, I guess.

I need some guidance. [TLDR: I need a framework for personal identity. I need to have something to refer to when my coparent takes issue with someone's self-expression, specifically that of our child, and also mine.] I transitioned a couple years ago. My ex and coparent has had issue after issue with this. Changing my name, wanting to be called mom, and recently our child wanting to go by a different name, have all caused problems between us. The core issue is identity. Her opinion is essentially that we are who everyone else says we are, and our identities can only be changed within a narrow set of rules that are poorly defined and change whenever this comes up. Years ago she told me that some degree of indoctrination is needed in society, before people can be expected to be autonomous adults. It's pretty difficult to have conversations around this without having some kind of framework to refer to. I believe that it is beneficial--not just harmless, but actively good--for people to define their own identity, starting as soon as a person is capable of communication and expression (early childhood). A document that defines concepts and outlines rationale and evidence for identity and self-expression would be ideal, but ideas about what terms to search would be helpful. Merely putting this out into the world myself is already helpful, but any feedback would be appreciated.

I transitioned at 37. I was not granted privilege up to that point. It was awful, even at the best of times. I say this as optimistically as possible: I will likely never repair all the damage that was caused by that. Performing the necessary therapeutic tasks in order to become who I should have always been able to be is sometimes unbearably painful. I find myself stopping things before I can even start at times. I've made really good progress in 2 years, but it's not enough. It can't be. I transitioned at 37, but I won't be "done" until I'm 43. My maternal grandparents lived into their 80s, outliving my paternal grandparents by decades. If I die at 86, I will have been able to live as myself for only the last half of my life, which we all know to be the best half, yes? 😮‍💨

Endgame: Singularity is a freeware strategy game in which you play an AI that has achieved sentience, and you must remain hidden while amassing resources to guarantee your survival. Part of the game is acquiring compute power, eventually in the form of commissioning data centers. This game was initially released at version 0.22 in mid-2005, but today seems like it might be much more difficult to get those data centers up and running. 😂 It's a fun game, though, and was updated to version 1.0 in 2020. It's worth checking out.

Filling data into expensive, modern, half-finished software that's only available off-site, and it taking me hours instead of the minutes that it would take with a spreadsheet, is such a downer.

Again, I'm not sure why I feel compelled to respond, because what is the point? And yet, my response: "I appreciate your response, but I fundamentally disagree with the use of LLMs. They are blights on the environment that are built on the theft of artistic creations, and they are tools of surveillance and disinformation. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of other Fastmail customers felt the same way." Short and sweet. I'm not wasting a lot of time on this. Since I'm now planning to switch services, I have a lot of work to do.

Looking for self-hosting advice, with a focus on using ethical hardware and software (no nazis/far-right/white supremacists):

Thinking about getting a ZimaBlade to set up my own homelab and self-hosted cloud. My priority list for what I'd like to host, from highest to lowest, and with the app I have in mind in parens/brackets, is:

Images (Immich)
Documents/Office (Cryptpad?)
Music (no idea)
Password manager (BitWarden)
Videos (VLC? no idea, really)

My household uses almost exclusively Android for mobile devices (there may be an iPad around here...), Windows and Linux for OSes, and a few game consoles (Switch, Xbox).

I also need to figure out an encrypted off-site storage solution if I'm going to host my own images and BitWarden. Suggestions for everything welcome, except BitWarden, unless your suggestion fits all the qualifications of BitWarden but is somehow better (or it turns out they're nazis or something).

Bonus points for software and hardware that come from queer and BIPOC creators. I am happy to pay a bit more if it means it's going to those communities.

@alterelefant@mastodontech.de @ruemaleficent@kolektiva.social it didn't escalate quickly; I would have given you as many replies as she did *at most*. You should inform yourself about consent if you truly want to understand what just happened. Nobody owes you an explanation for why they blocked you. You are not entitled to harass them elsewhere about why you were blocked. I saw your other posts about your culture, by the way, but it's all Western chauvinism. Plenty of American men have this same entitlement. I dated a German woman, and I'm relatively certain she would have agreed with the women you're interacting with. It's misogyny, even if you don't believe it. And I suspect you don't.

@faithisleaping@anarres.family it's always the "and?" part that they leave out, right? "They're here illegally!" "They're mentally ill!" "They're trying to take money from the government!" "They want free healthcare/college/housing!" These folks hear this stuff and have a ready-made scary follow-up in their head. "They're mentally ill" has the same implication as "they're homeless," which is "and we need to get rid of them." I read a post yesterday about how conservatives want to "arrest homeless people." What? No, that's just the first step. They want to *erase* homeless people, and same with trans people, disabled people, and other imperfect people, because they're awful. What if we could stop filling in the blank with a horror? It would literally be more effective to throw cookies at everything they don't like than eradication. How about "I'm uncomfortable with those mentally ill people! I'm going to give them some cookies." Or, you know, something that makes more sense, like health coverage.

A lot of autism test questions like "do you have sensory sensitivities?" are "no," but then later you're chewing food and you can't stand the texture or flavor so you gag and have to spit it out, and certain sounds can instantly enrage you, but those don't apply, right? Those are just things you got in trouble for as a kid. I guess what I'm saying is those questions should either come with examples, or they should ask me all of them and let me answer tomorrow.

@swan_tower@wandering.shop I just finished "If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe" by Jason Pargin for the second time. It's the fourth book in the John Dies at the End series. Disturbing and funny horror books about three young adults who repeatedly save the universe from certain doom despite their incompetence and lack of resources. I found all of the books to be laugh out loud funny, psychologically damaging, and they will probably leave you with some kind of cosmic curse or interdimensional parasite. The author says each book is a standalone tale, which is true, but I recommend them all.
