Hello fellow kids. Where does one find the angst of nine inch nails and kmfdm in modern times?

I left EA yesterday and am now officially on summer vacation, woo!
After a few weeks ill be joining Bolt Graphics, a startup GPU company, aiming to put the graphics back into graphics processing unit.
It's a small company with a bold but respectable plan. Wish me / us luck!

RE: https://mastodon.social/@RuthMalan/116893028743364880
I was feeling despair and burn out professionally, starting ~a year ago.
The AI cultism, that it was starving everything else, and personally feeling like I was at the apex of what I could hope for, and it wasnt that great (cant share why).
The job hunt reminded me that small and mid sized companies are friendlier and more human.
Also there are plenty of places that value things that arent ML, they are just not as loud about it.
I believe things will be ok again for us. Just needs to hurry up!

A Texture Lookup Approach to Bézier Curve Evaluation on the GPU
https://jcgt.org/published/0015/02/01/
New published paper!
The premise is that you can offload polynomial evaluation to the texture sampling unit, which can be useful for improving execution times if you are compute bound.
Readers of my blog may remember this from ~10 years ago. It has been improved with Seiler interpolation to be able to do higher order curves in lower dimensional textures.

I described it to my wife and we cooked it for dinner.

I cannot fricken wait for subnautica 2 to come out.
Im bummed that its early access and not the full game, and ive actually stopped getting early access games as a rule because it ruins the experience for me, but ill make an exception for subnautica.

@rossgrady yeah. People who think UBI will naturally fall out of this are so damn naive.

@dougmerritt@mathstodon.xyz the policy change was just an update to the tos that the games are leased instead of owned

@dougmerritt@mathstodon.xyz steam recently made it so you dont buy games from them anymore, you lease them. That bugs me quite a bit.

@bagder at my first professional game dev job in ~2006 I used libcurl to make our game talk to a web server for UGC uploads and downloads.
At my current game dev job I'm using libcurl to talk to a web service for internal telemetry of a game dev tool.
Thanks so much for the great library Daniel :)

@jalefkowit@vmst.io they don't even see it as broken either. They see it as a personal failing and say things like "im just not very good with technology". It's really sad.

@lisyarus@mastodon.gamedev.place random comment in case it helps and you didnt already know - rational splines aka splines with weights per control point are just one curve divided by another, but gain a lot of power - like being able to represent conic sections.

@rhoot@mastodon.gamedev.place from what I understand, the story will emerge as development continues, so it's EA but also kind of episodic releases? Idk. Im looking forward to it

@rzeta0 when you say locally random but globally uniform, it makes me think of white noise which is uniform at the limit, but not before then.
But I get what you mean :)
Blue noise is also disordered hyperuniformity, and low discrepancy sequences are ordered hyperuniformity which relate to crystals.

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net something that has always annoyed me is tv shows dont aim to tell good stories, just keep you coming back.
It's "capitalist optimization" taken too far, like so mamy other things.

@antopatriarca@mathstodon.xyz a person i worked with at EA left quantum chromodynamics to come (back) to game dev.
He walks circles around everyone in the research group mathematically, while also being friendly, open minded and creative.
Maybe that will be you in a few years if you decide to come back after things normalize :P
