postmarketOS
postmarketOS develops free and open-source software to extend the life of consumer electronics. By empowering people to have full control of their devices, we promote a healthier and more sustainable society.
happy trans day of visibility
New blog post introducing the WIP Duranium project (immutable postmarketOS), some of its major features, and explaining why some design decisions were made. :blobcatthink:
> Either the new image works, or the system falls back to the previous one automatically. No partially-applied state. No debugging audio when you need to make a phone call and no fussing with a broken web browser when you just want to doomscroll cat photos. It also means developers can reproduce the exact state of a user's device, making it much easier to track down and fix issues.

We are able to follow up last year's success of financing important audio improvements in postmarketOS and the wider Linux Mobile ecosystem with another project this year, this time tackling q6voice(d).
Thanks to everybody who has been donating to postmarketOS, you made this possible!
📍 Details for the postmarketOS conference are up, as well as a call for proposals!
Details:

"We are looking forward to your entry! No matter your background, everyone is welcome to be part of our event.
Your submission can be a short talk (max. 20 mins including questions), long talk (max. 60 mins including questions), workshop, meetup or discussion round (90 mins, for other durations please contact us).
The audience will consist of:
- kernel hackers
- distribution developers
- desktop environment maintainers
- activists
- end users
and potentially more groups of people. If your submission targets at least one of these groups, it's probably a good one! Ideally, it would also be related to postmarketOS in some way, but that is not a hard requirement."
We are excited to announce that bluebunny is now a trusted contributor in postmarketOS!
He is a maintainer of the xiaomi-pipa and samsung-exynos7 devices and has been helping to get patches merged faster in pmaports by reviewing them 🥳

Heads up for edge users:
We've switched to Plymouth for displaying the boot splash! This allows screen rotation to work, and to toggle between splash and boot logs by pressing ESC on devices with a keyboard, or the power button 🔌 on phones and tablets.

🧪 The test phase for postmarketOS v26.06 starts next week (moved back by one week as preparing the repo and images need some more time).
If you want to, you too can take part in the testing effort by simply adding yourself to the testing team wiki page and joining the testing chat!

New finance blog post is up, nerding out over the 2025 budget (plan vs. execution), and the budget for 2026.
The most exciting part is probably the q6voice rework and mainlining which will improve audio significantly for postmarketOS and other Linux Mobile distributions on a large number of QC devices.
A huge thanks to everybody who is supporting postmarketOS financially to make this possible! 😍

We made good progress on automated hardware testing in postmarketOS, resulting in being able to run pmaports changes on a real OP6T! Thanks to everybody who donated to postmarketOS or contributed their time to make this possible! ❤️

"pmbootstrap will now perform strict builds of packages by default, which was previously opt-in behavior enabled either by invoking it with the --strict flag or by setting pmb:strict in the APKBUILD for a package. The change for this was merged to pmbootstrap's main branch today and will be shipping in the next minor release, probably 3.11.0."
Thanks to @aelin@donotsta.re for implementing this and writing the devel blog post!

🎙️ Whoever placed a bunch of big tables and benches at the ULB parkinglot rocks, having those allowed us to record a podcast featuring fifteen (!) people sharing their experiences on FOSDEM Sunday. Lots of folks from postmarketOS and special guests:
* @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems from Alpine Linux
* @flypig@mastodon.social from Sailfish OS
* @1peter10@chaos.social from LINMOB.net
Huge thanks to @williamtries@floss.social and @tgm@fosstodon.org for editing this episode!

The all-new "devel" blog is now live!
https://postmarketos.org/devel/
As postmarketOS developer, it can be hard to keep up with changes in workflows and tooling, and understanding why these changes were made. @newbyte@mastodon.nu had the idea to create a blog specifically for such developer-relevant changes and wrote the first blog post for it, about the basically unused pmbootstrap subcommands "lint" and "aportupgrade" being removed. Thanks for that and to @przmk@fosstodon.org for implementing this new blog in our homepage!

We're reverting back from doas to sudo, this time choosing sudo-rs as our implementation.
Read our latest blog post for our reasoning.
https://postmarketos.org/edge/2026/03/18/sudo-rs-instead-of-doas/
After the next stable release of postmarketOS (v26.06) we have decided that unmaintained devices (those where the device package doesn't have a maintainer= line in their APKBUILD) will be archived, this means the packages will no longer be built and included in our binary repository.
If you want to make sure an unmaintained device continues to be supported, you can take over maintainership yourself so that we can reach you if there's a problem rebuilding the device or kernel package.
See all the details in the blog post here: https://postmarketos.org/devel/2026/03/24/archiving-unmaintained-devices/
The mobile-config-firefox documentation has been split up into multiple pages (from mostly a single README.md file), was updated, and is now available at https://docs.postmarketos.org/mobile-config-firefox/ for comfortable reading. For example… with Firefox on your Linux Mobile phone! 😉
The ✏️ icon will get you directly to the markdown file in the git repository. Contributions welcome!
Great news from @lynxis@social.bau-ha.us in OpenIMSD:
"I've written a profile manager for the QCOM baseband which talks to the PDC service.
The PDC is the persistent device configuration. It controls similar settings as the carrier configuration on Android, such as the APN, SMSC, the IMS functionality, the 5G functionality, ... But the PDC profiles have more control over the baseband than the Android carrier configuration does."

🎙️ This year we did the 3rd post-FOSDEM hackathon in a row. We figured it was about time to sit in front of a mic and share our impressions of one of those! Thanks to all the amazing people who made this hackathon possible, we were not only very productive but in a great mood as well! 😄
Special thanks for editing this episode to @tgm@fosstodon.org ✂️
Heads up for pinephone users: new postmarketOS installations for the PinePhone use the wrong UCM configs
https://postmarketos.org/edge/2026/03/13/pinephone-wrong-ucm/
Speaking of great things for Linux Mobile that @nlnet@social.nlnet.nl and @NGIZero@mastodon.xyz are funding:
One of them is the OpenIMSD project, which has the goal of getting VoLTE on Qualcomm based phones working with postmarketOS, @mobian@fosstodon.org and all other Linux (Mobile) distributions.
As a precursor to that, we need to be able to create VoLTE-related QMI traces from Android phones. @lynxis@social.bau-ha.us figured out a good method and wrote a blog post about it:
https://postmarketos.org/blog/2025/06/17/volte-project-qmi-sniffing-with-frida/
