"A guide to running a stand at FOSDEM"

Here's a very useful blogpost from @rubenwardy@hachyderm.io, especially for anyone who has not staffed a FOSDEM stand before.

If I could add just one thing, it would be "and wear a decent mask; pack a spare / replacement filter". Air flow was dreadful, and it was rammed with people.

The growth of the Internet and of free software was during a time of [relative] peace and hope, after the end of the cold war [in Europe]. It was ideal and we forgot about war, dictatorship and other nasty things. #FOSDEM

And with deliberate attacks (think supply-chain), free software is in the battleground. And we are not ready for that. #FOSDEM

Purely corporate speak from Mastodon official, boring and self-serving. (And insisting that new users should be directed to one specific instance, but no longer mastodon.social, but mandatory Mastodon and have to agree with the terms of use.) #FOSDEM

@russss@chaos.social how did you end up doing #CO2 monitoring at #emfcamp? Between #fosdem and #eventinfra we are close to spending 10k€ on #airgradient because they do most things right, and we were not able to get our own hardware spun up. Intention is for everything to go into the eventinfra loan pool so ALL the conferences can monitor their environments. Before we make that step, we wanted to check if it makes sense to collaborate on fully open hardware, firmware, and software stack instead.

Where can you meet and learn from #FOSS experts? In Europe, there are great opportunities like FOSDEM in early February and SFSCON ( @sfscon@mastodon.social ) in November. I'm so proud of the SFSCON 2026 programme. It's still a draft, but so many interesting people are already ready to share their knowledge with the community. I'm counting the days until 13 November! https://www.sfscon.it/programs/2026/ #FreeSoftware #OpenSourxe #FOSDEM #SFSCON #DigitalSovereignty

Each year we are excited to see how many NLnet grantees we can spot in the list of @fosdem@fosstodon.org speakers. This year is a new high with over 100 speakers! Another record will be broken at our hex sticker table. We'll be bringing over 300.000 stickers featuring more than 300 unique hex designs. We have 2 BoF meetups, 1 with @NGIZero@mastodon.xyz and 1 NLnet get-together and we'll be bringing snacks. And Michiel Leenaars will give the opening keynote on Saturday. Let's meet at #FOSDEM! https://nlnet.nl/events/20260131/FOSDEM26/index.html

Another Wayland compositor I looked at was @ifreund@hachyderm.io's https://isaacfreund.com/software/river/ which I learned about last #FOSDEM! River is "non-monolithic", which means that you can write your own window manager for it, and it will do the compositing for you. It also has deeply integrated multi-seat support, and even the simple "tinyrwm" examples I tried work pretty well with multiple seats! 🎉 So… I think it would be an excellent basis to write a new window manager with first-class multi-seat support!
